There is a newer version of this tuner that uses rechargeable batteries, so you never have to open it again to replace the 9 volt. The power switch has also been removed and a USB-C port is located there in it's place for charging the batteries. Got mine from Vibroplex in mid January and it works great with my Chameleon MPAS-Lite configured as an Inverted V.

Yes true. I have one being shipped to me. I personally like the fact that this one doesn't have a proprietary battery

Those are quite helpful. Same thing as in the IC-7300, which has its own internal tuner

There's also an SWR meter on the main display so you can continuously monitor. Cycle through the meters for it - really handy.

GREAT to see the IC-705 in action. A lot of videos are under optimal conditions or they edit out the failed QSO attempts. Really appreciate seeing some of the challenges as well as the success. Cannot wait to see your video adding an amp to the mix. Any idea of how much TX signal loss happens using a tuner/random wire combo? You had some pretty great signal reports for the distance and power so I'm guessing not much but I assume the tuner had to absorb some of the TX power to make the antenna resonant. (Poor tech wording, I'm not an engineer.)

ICOM just released a firmware update for the IC-705, version 1.20. It has many updates including more direct support for the ICOM AH-705 tuner. Also an update for the ICOM 705 programming software.

I just loaded it onto my 705 this morning, working well so far.
Not sure I honestly care about the AH-705 tuner, though. I don't find any retailers who carry it yet, but when they do, I am betting it will be over-priced as compared to the mAT and LDG models.

Nice contacts. Don't sell yourself short. I've reached Western Europe, Northern South America, the Carribean and as far as the West Coast from my QTH in Georgia. I believe you're better positioned than I am to make some excellent DX contacts. My 20 Watt Xiegu G-90 got me all the way to lebenon, Alaska, New Zealand, southern Chile and South Africa. I figured out it's not always about my.lack.of power but more about how the recieving stations RX is set up. Getting filtered out is not uncommon. Enjoying your videos and 73

I need to get a turner for my EFHW. 12, 15, 20 and 40 works just fine without a turner. Bands like 10, 17, 30, 60, 75/80 needs a tuner. On a side note, the 10, 20, and 40m bands seem to be the best for QRP work. Bands like 12, 15 and 17m change rather rapidly and make it difficult for QRP operators.

Nice video. Can't get one, out of stock.
I noticed you don't like the speaker in the mic as well. At least Icom does not lock you into using it. Just put the mic plug in and not the speaker.
Can you put the ATU into bypass and will it stay in bypass when you change bands?
I have an LDG and I only need it on the upper end of 40 meters. When I change bands the radio turns the ATU back on. I had to remove the control cable and work the ATU manually so it stays in bypass and only is manually turned on when needed.

Am I correct in believing the amp would be installed between the transciever and the tuner, or would the amp be on the antenia side of the tuner?

I've seen maT-705 videos with the USB rechargeable battery and without the USB chargeable. And while the USB rechargeable one would seem to be more 'convenient', the 9 volt one actually makes more sense from a practical point of view. Although in this case they should have made a little battery opening instead of having to disassemble the device to get at it.
Is the current trend of USB rechargeable devices a good one or poorly thought out idea?
Someone needs to do a video about the current trend of having rechargeable USB devices, accessories and radios versus devices using regular off the shelf batteries. While USB rechargeable devices are convenient, how convenient would they be during an extended power outage after a hurricane or tornado passed through?
How convenient would USB devices be in a remote area for a week? And it's not just this tuner, but all devices like USB rechargeable weather radios, FRS radios and GMRS radios. If you keep them plugged in all the time and then use it for a couple of hours, then it's fine. What about several days without commercial power? And then consider how many wall warts and the resulting rats nest of wires, plugs do you need to clutter up your shack area.
Are 10 or 15 year old FRS radios that run on AA or AAA off the shelf alkaline batteries more useful (valuable) than brand new FRS radios that run on a USB rechargeable battery? Absolutely. If you are the lucky few that bought a AA case for your Baofeng radio, or bought an TenTec R4020 that uses AA batteries, congratulations. You are ahead of the game.
    Time considerations
With a couple of packages of off the shelf AA batteries in your bag, you can operate in the field or home without commercial power for a very long time. Weeks if necessary. If your AA cell batteries go dead, it takes less than a minute to replace them. If your USB rechargeable battery goes dead, that device or radio is useless and out of commission for an hour or two while the battery is recharging. Not good. That would be no problem if you have an fully charged extra rechargeable battery. But what happens when THAT battery finally goes dead in some remote area or after some extended outage? Likewise, 'old school' flashlights than run on off the shelf alkaline are more functional and practical than a USB rechargeable one.
Sure, solar power can recharge the USB batteries in the field or after an extended outage. It might be useless if your USB rechargeable batteries need replacing in the middle of night, or during days of rain or inclement weather. The upshot is: See if you can modify your radio or devices to run on off the shelf alkaline batteries. If you can, you are already head of the game. Don't rely on USB rechargeable batteries alone. Find a way to have the ability to use off the shelf alkaline batteries, if you can. You should always strive to have power flexibility regardless if you are a ham or not.

Really looking forward to the amplifier + IC705 videos. Looking to understand if other than cost is there other downsides. I am a new general and considering this setup for my base radio. I really want to have the portability to do SOTA and POTA . I live in an HOA so I’ll be looking to use a quick deploy antennas like an MPAS, SOTA Beam, or Packtenna both at home and away. Thanks Jason for covering this topic...surprised it’s not more prevalent

Are you asking about the downsides of IC-705 or downside of adding an amp? The IC-705 is my only radio and I use it at the QTH as well as for SOTA. It's fantastic. However - I will list my 3 big grievances that I didn't catch when I saw reviews on this radio before I bought it.
#1 - No APRS! which I use quite a bit in my SOTA activations to Self Spot, track and send messages among many other things. Truly a bummer.
#2 - Only one antenna connection. Major bummer physically switching antennas and adding a $5-10 co-ax switcher adds a ton of interference. A clunky $50 switcher is the only thing I've found to work.
#3 - Not a True Dual Band radio. Another feature that I use quite a bit on my HT which is 1/5th the price. There is a "Split" option for programming for satellites and such but a sorry substitute for true Dual Band.
All that being said - this radio has made my SOTA activations a helluva lot more fun. I just have to bring along my Yaesu FT-3d HT to cover the features this radio is missing. Which is a small price to pay and fantastic redundancy for safety and getting contacts.

    • @briangroh444
      @briangroh444 3 роки тому

@@joen8joe231 I do not have an amp and I do great local 2m simplex and repeater work from a roll-up J-pole on a 20ft telescoping pole at the QTH. I listen to a LOT of traffic on my 20 meter endfed- Mostly Texas, Canada, Oregon, Arizona, Florida - and from eavesdropping on the conversations those stations are running BIG antennas 100-800 watts. Still working on my CW skills and I haven't tried making contacts on 20m (CW or otherwise) from the QTH so I can't report on that. From a nearby park I talked to Texas on SSB 20M so I know it's possible but I've spent very little time trying. Someone leant me a 50watt Mirage amp and after a month of testing with it - I never reached any farther than without it so I'm a little soured on the promises of what an amp will do. For that reason - VERY excited to see the follow-up video to this. Maybe I'll learn what I was doing wrong or if I just had unrealistic expectations.

I debated the same question and bought the ic-7300 first. Now I'm kind of wishing I'd sprung for the 705 first. You can't downscale the weight of a 7300 in your backpack. You can however accessorize the 705 with added stuff like tuners and amps. In many respects, the 705 is more radio than the 7300. But you've got a very small, quiet voice working QRP, so it forces you to up your antenna game. Who knows, as I get older and weaker, I may be happy to have the heavy 7300 as a powerful base station sitting at a picnic table. But for now, I like having the lightweight 705 in my backpack.

@@markhwebster I ended up buying a 991a. A bit smaller than the 7300. I want to be able to do POTA and it will work fine from a park bench or my truck. QRP rig at some point in the future.
