I love Hell's depiction in 2016 and Eternal as a place that feels impossibly dangerous and chaotic yet still full of life horrible as that life may be, but the way Hell is depicted in Doom 3 is one of complete dread. In 2016/Eternal Hell feels like a blasted and ruined wasteland dotted with spots of note, but in Doom 3 everything about Hell feels very deliberate, as if the entirety of Hell itself is alive, knows exactly where you are at all times, and is toying with you, letting you by for just a little bit longer to let you believe you're safe before showing you how wrong you are.
If you consider the skybox, Doom 3's Hell is like an infinite abyss of fire and chaos with these "asteroids" floating through it, each of them being some sort of Hellish realm in its own right.
As good as Doom 2016 and Eternal are, there's something to be said for the dark, spooky atmosphere of Doom 3. It was truly one of the scariest games I've ever played.
Doom 3 actually treated Hell like HELL, not just a fiery shooting gallery. Combine the atmosphere, tone, realism, and grounded simple story of 3 with the gameplay and innovations of New Doom, and you have the Ultimate Doom experience. Now if they could just perfect the multiplayer....
I played Doom 3 when I was about ten years old. It just so happened to be the first videogame I ever played aside from Mario cart. It was, without question, the scariest piece of media I had ever experienced. The terror and dread you feel lurking around every corner is almost too much to bear. The unfathomably dark atmosphere is nearly palpable. I remember being so scared I'd have to pause and take a break every so often just to catch my breath. Looking back at it now, it doesn't seem to have lost that effect on me. I'm so thankful for the developers who made this game. They clearly put their heart and soul into it.
Absolutely beautiful description my friend. It was my first horror game experience as well, except i was 7 years old. I'll never ever forget the impact it had on me mentally and physically. My all time favorite game ever, period.

I know exactly what you mean, its something that infuriates me, they never release the full soundtracks, I heard versions of this death chant before from other videos but it was always recorded in-game and the sound of the hell growth was too prominent, this is epic beyond belief!!!!
Yeah man i remember when i was playin doom 3 as a kid and sometimes i was more terrified because of this evil monk chants than monsters itself, this scary factor was ahead of its time

i like doom 3's darker and serious tone. 2016 did a really good job balancing it out. Eternal was hella goofy and over the top kinda like a comic book but i welcomed it.
Prey 2006 is such a great game. It's like Doom 3 with only Aliens haha. Its a great recommendation for fans of Doom 3. It's basically the exact same engine and everything looks the exact same as Doom 3. Infact the sounds of doors opening and closing are the exact same as Doom 3s sounds. Prey 2006 I haven't beat yet but it's been a super fun experience so far! I'm at the school bus part right now. I love how it feels like a direct continuation of Doom 3, at least in my head it does.
I wish someone would remake Doom 3 with absolutely insane graphical fidelity with all the latest enhancements in graphics that have been made over the past 20 years since this game released.

However, the lighting and the creatures themselves are still very standout and for the time, there was nothing else like it. The tech base on Mars was very well executed.
I’m not sure why people think Doom 3 is a bad game…sure, it was different, but in my opinion I think Doom 3 is my favorite Doom game, although Doom 2016 comes close. Don’t cancel me
Amazing. We haven't heard ambient like this from other Doom games with maybe the exception of Aubrey Hodges work (PS1 versions of Doom, Doom II, Final Doom and Doom 64) but this takes cake.
It would be amazing to get an extended version of awesome_choir_mel_slow, doom_temple and doom_temple 2, i love doom 3 as well as its ambience, but there is something about these particular ambience soundtracks that stands out to me, i love it. Also thanks for compiling all these soundtracks and i completely agree with everything you said in the description!

IMO Doom³ had the scariest depiction of hell in any form of media. What makes it even more terrifying is that audio log of the scientist who was stuck in Hell. He meantions that he turned his back to his team to collect a sample but when he turned around they were gone, vanished into thin air, all equipment just sitting there. Just something about that is just deeply unsettling. And the other audio logs that were about the men who came back rapidly lost their minds and went into full blown dementia and then slowly became the undead. So stepping into hell literally dooms you and once you return its only a matter of time before you lose your mind and your body deteriates and then your soul is forever damned to hell. Doom³ is a severely underrated masterpiece.
Doom 3 was different from the rest of the series and wasn't received well at the time (since it pretty much came out at the same time as Half Life 2 as well.), but now it seems to age quite well for the sudden rise and popularity of the horror genre. This was pretty much not only my first Doom game but my first horror game, that to this day despite playing countless times over the years still scares me.
Actually, Doom 3 was received pretty well back in 2004. And it was id Software's best-selling game for several years in a row. Don't believe everything the haters say ;)

That same "hallelujah" sound can be found in game files of Quake 3 Arena as drone sound. Doom 3 basically gave it more choir and instruments. I am not certain if devs wanted it to be a reference to Quake 3, but it gave me some nice memories.

I understand it's still satan's presence that's eager to eat your soul and is waiting for your suffering and pain, instead of letting you just stay and listen to this... But this ambient isn't menacing, on my guess. Or maybe I'm just being possessed by these chant ambients... Yet it does its influence outstandingly.
I don't know where that is in-game, either, but it gives me chills every time I hear it. It's like a corrupted and distorted version of "Hallelujah", and the calm chanting makes it all the more creepy and unsettling. It's like Hell is mocking life and the faithful with its twisted soul-devouring corruption, or luring anyone lost to its damnation like Sirens of old Greek lore.

I don't think it's necessarily evil per se, but to me it gives a vibe of someone who had their soul devoured by Hell and left as a hollowed husk, chanting in vain for salvation that they were denied. It could also be viewed as a mockery, like Hell giving the middle finger to life and those who pray for deliverance from the death and evil it brings. The ambience of this track isn't evil in and of itself but I think it's meant to be creepy in a subtler, can't-quite-put-your-finger-on-it way. I'm also having trouble finding any info on where this plays in the game. Many of these tracks were subtly used for atmospheric ambience to fit themes of the levels (which are overpowered by the noises of the areas and very easy to miss) and not documented like the OST.

Or like - the soul that made a contract with the devil, is about to pay itself for purposes or goals it achieved with the help of the Evil. Or slowly becoming the servant of hell, that is willing to follow Evil's lead only, like an obedient machine, to deliver new souls to the devil. Whatever this theme means on real - it sounds fascinating. I agree with your opinion, almost the same vibe of "There's no salvation. The God has forgotten you. And your soul is now and will be mine. Forever..."
