I like to call it more "Satanic" than all of the games. Even than other games. There's so much twisted things going around... The pentagram, the people in crosses upside down, the twisting bodies, the unsettling faces of Lost Souls, the hell with all those pigs corpses, if you die there you'll be tortured in hell FOREVA, the sound of people being tortured, the voices calling you, everything goes to an extreme.
@@grievetan The shotgun had to be used as they instructed you to. Close range shots does insane damage. 1 shot kills an imp, 4 shots close range could kill a revenant. People kept shooting from a distance and expect to do damage. The shotgun is my go to weapon for many demons.
No game has astonished me with it's beauty and atmospheric ambience like Doom 3. Literally no game has blown me away other than Doom 3. My forever fave of the entire franchise.
I dont know why people hate this game. I think the new Dooms are garbage. The new Dooms are arena shooters that locks you in an area and you can only proceed when you killed everybody, and that over and over again. BORING!

15:03 the entrance to Delta Labs, one of the most memorable parts of the game and sadly, isn't often talked about. All through the game you've heard about how Delta is the most dangerous place in the whole Mars base. You save ammo and prepare for that level, then you get there and find nothing. Just mayhem, death and destruction. It's like the demons have moved on. For the first several minutes of that level, you don't encounter any monsters but you can hear them. Then when you finally do stumble upon them, they come at you with full on fury. This is the first level you encounter the chaingun commandos who prove to be one of the hardest enemies in the game.
I absolutely love the calm before the storm, an absolutely gorgeous level with full on mind games. Still get chills even when i replay the game regularly.
@@rtxa yeah that part was terrifying. Especially because you first encounter those dog sized spiders made of human fingers there Trites or Ticks. For me the Alpha Labs build up was way scarier. I was a kid and got stuck at that part. Having to see that big huge blue door, the wounded soldier infront of it, running to get the PDA from that terrifying red room, I was too scared to go into because I knew it would trigger something, and then sprinting back avoiding the freshly spawned monsters, seeing the marine dead, and then finally opening the Huge Blue Door to ALPHA LABS

The harsh shadows and the colored lighting hold up so well, and those particle effects, man. In some ways, Doom 3 still genuinely looks ahead of it's time.
the "haters" have arguments. the levels were small and tight, no arenas to fight enemies. instead you entered a random room and it spawned 3-4 enemies close to you. the enemies were thrown in your face all the time, as if you're supposed to be scared of them the 1000th time it happens. the game literally used "door-imp jumpscares" until the end, i got tired of seeing them. that wasn't masterfully crafted. Quake 4 was much better at being Doom 3. and it had similar design and atmosphere.

@@AndalusianPrince that's not what small and tight means. It means you had close encounters and not enough open spaces to fight enemies because the Devs thought that I was scary that way. Instead they ruined their game, because doom works well with open spaced arenas and strategically placed enemies. I've created doom 3 maps before, it's enemies work well with that. It's almost like another team designed the enemies, and another did the leaves without knowing how to use them effectively. The game is basically 9 hours of imps jumping at your face behind doors it's not scary the first time, it's not scary the 300th time it happens. I dare you play it and try to count how many times that happens.

the whole placed by itself is a suffocating underground scientific base full of cold working machinery and aparatus, they don't care about you in the first place, and hell on top of that, demoralizing atmosphere, 5 stars for me
Never noticed the marine with the chaingun and him asking "Alpha Team, what's your location?" at 1:49 followed by massive banging. Makes me wonder if a Hell Knight got to him
Love the hellish environments and how the facility gets progressively more evil looking as you go through the game. I honestly think Doom 2016 and Eternal should have taken a few notes from Doom 3 in making interesting looking environments.
People just don't realise how id meticulously crafted this world. They all went berserk from get go and totally missed all the subtle details the game had to offer. This game was meant to played at a leisurely pace, but it is id's fault that they gave marine such incredible speed. Everyone abused it and finished the game in no time...
You can hear muffled voices all throughout mars city after the invasion. Try playing it again and you'd be surprised how many people you can still hear. Fighting for their lives, talking, worried, panicking, screaming and after that... pure silence...
This game's ambience really is something else. It is funny to me, because I speedrun the game, to look at 95% of these areas and to know exactly where they are. So in a way, these ambient sounds soothe me since I am used to hearing them. Thanks for making this. Edit: I also appreciate the BFG projetctile you fired into the demon lair at the end 😅
Back in the day a game would actually make you feel things. True, games nowadays enjoy massively improved graphics but all that goes to waste due to bad scripts, lazy writing, cliche after cliche and to top it off, the moneymen sticking their disgusting fingers in everything they consider a waste of resources. Man, I wish it would just stop so we can enjoy games again.
This game was so cool, idk why people hated it so much. The gloomy, dark, almost pale atmosphere and setting is really cool. The enemy designs are unique and super cool. The weapons, although not the best, looked really good. This game felt stressful to play at times (in a good way because it was scary) and it truly made me feel, immeresed, like i really was surviving off rations of ammo and felt almost underpowered to the demons. Yet i barley manage to make it through by sheer will and luck. Yeah at times the game did feel repetitive, predictable, and felt too long, but it did a good job in being a survival horror game.
This game was scary, the lack of people made you feel like you were in their presence. And the PDF's made it more scary because you could learn what their days were like, getting ready for games to play or other after hours fun time to them recording their last moments hiding in trash cans before being torn apart.

Before revisiting this game a few days ago I've never notice how quiet and eerie the atmosphere in it is. It is so effective that when I first played it, as a teenager, I was so damn scared and on the edge all the time and didn't why!
I find it bizarre that l was just typing on another video last week about how there seemed to not be a video paying homage to the amazing design choices in this game. My main focus was the machinery models, as I find them to be really badass and even some creepy due to size and ambient sound (the teleporter and delta labs machine for instance). The ambient sound design is amazing too. Subtle but effective. It leaves such a dark and diseased tinge on your brain. I do audio work as well, and have found myself many times trying to capture the same spirit of choices this game made. The one at 4:43 (I forget the name of it) is my all time fave when you hear it in the Hell level. Such a sick feeling, and I still wonder what the hell the origin of the sound was. I’m only just a lil creeped out by how my typing of certain phrases around Google like: “doom machine models”, “doom level design” didn’t render any results at first, but a week later, this pops vid up, lol. I’m glad it did though! Great job. We need this for loads of great titles with amazing design both architecturally and sound. Not too many in my opinion got it completely right!

That bit w/ the red-lit corridor @ 7:22 was always one of my favorites, with that soft, echoing "tapping" sound. It only appears in one other place in the game that I know of, in the entry foyer to Delta 1 shown @ 15:10.

Sadly, in a replay of the BFG Edition inspired by this video, I found they took that sound out at the part in the start of Delta 1...I was disappointed, lol...pity I can't find about a 20 minute video of that, minus the hissing steam pipe, lol.

DOOM 4: You pick up where Doom 3 left off, playing as the Doom Marine (not the Doom Slayer). You return to earth where demonic portals and mass possessions are taking place, separate to and before DOOM 2016. It would be a merger of a more expansive level design with an exploratory approach with cities you’d be tasked to, while extraction missions would accommodate the close quarter and claustrophobic horror of DOOM 3.
The part that freaked me out the most is not here. It is just after you encounter the first chainsaw commander,. Then you open a locked door, step in and the walls are illuminated with patterns that fade in and out. Crazy sound as well. That made me quit the game a few times.
The fact that the fat Xbox could actually run this game smoothly was absolutely insane. Had it on the xbox and pc when i was 6, greatest time of my life.
7:24 I can't find it anywhere, this is the area where once you reach the end of the hallway the lights flicker on and the ambience kicks up to adrenaline inducing levels as enemies pour out of the walls at you. Almost reminiscent of the beginning where you get dragged under the floor and get caught in a red light room with a loud buzzing ambience. I can't find these specific sounds anywhere, unless of course I dig for them in the files myself.
Damn.. Is there any mods that we can explore whole doom 3 map that theres no demons at all and all things are normal as they should be that will be great.
A year late but if you wanted to, just type in the console “killmonsters” and every demon will be dead, cutscenes won’t have anything in them and things like the imps coming through the doors in admin don’t happen, but there aren’t any demons so that’s fun
cool idea, but it would have been better if you exclusively chose sceneries without people, gore such as corpses and blood and any sort of activity to put in this showcase. just architecture, lighting and ambience.

I had rockets by that time I think, and plenty of plasma cells. Rockets work decently on them.

One of my major career-goals as a Videogame-Designer is to think of a Scifi-Horror game inspired by Doom 3 with a similar sort of setting and visuals.

Yeah it's really hypnotic in a strange way. I found that sound in particular really seems to accentuate the player's loneliness.

Damn.. Is there any mods that we can explore whole doom 3 map that theres no demons at all and all things are normal as they should be that will be great.
A year late but if you wanted to, just type in the console “killmonsters” and every demon will be dead, cutscenes won’t have anything in them and things like the imps coming through the doors in admin don’t happen, but there aren’t any demons so that’s fun

cool idea, but it would have been better if you exclusively chose sceneries without people, gore such as corpses and blood and any sort of activity to put in this showcase. just architecture, lighting and ambience.
