You are a wonderful person, Gretchen; kind, considerate, caring, sympathetic, fair and giving. You do so much for the animals under your care, and I’m sorry that you lost your sweet cat, Teddy Bear, as well as, one of your chickens.
You’re right about the plight of chickens being much bigger than just the number of eggs they lay and the toll on their bodies. Thank you for the additional information about your chickens not eating their own eggs. Do you think that maybe, if the chickens were not domesticated, and not being fed and cared for as you do for them, would they possibly do as we once heard, and eat their own eggs for the nutrition of it?
I have been vegan for 12 years now, and I didn’t know, prior to that, how horrible life is for the animals we use. I have also learned, over the years, that our use of animals impacts more than just the animals, as you mentioned.
I will continue to hope that people will see the bigger picture and make the connection between diet and: 1. animal rights (their right to a peaceful, natural existence); 2. disease (zoonotic ie. Covid, Aids, Spanish Influenza, Aviary Flu, etc.); 3. human health (mental and physical); 4. the environment (global warming: fires, flooding, droughts, destruction of the ocean & rainforests (both, considered the lungs of the world); and, 5. animal extinction due to habitat loss and environmental damage.
The bigger picture is HUGE and sometimes overwhelming…but, good people, like you, Gretchen, give real solutions, like delicious vegan desserts that taste as good or better than their conventional counterpart. Others creatives come up with vegan food that replaces those savoury “comfort foods” we all hate to give up. I think that you chefs are doing an amazing job of making the transition from eating or using animals and their by-products to PLANTS ONLY, more achievable and desirable. Thank you for that!❤

Really enjoyed this one, also. And, yes, you are still vegan, Gretchen. Compromise is an important trait of a functional marriage, and your spouse surely respects and _understands_ veganism as a concept, so this is the sane medium. Given that you are concerned about the environmental toll of avocadoes, human cashew harvesters, monkey coconut slaves, the insane commodification for live transport of baby animals, etc., shows that you are already more "with it" than many vegans. We don't live in a vegan world, godammit. Those birds are living the Life of Reilly there, to be fair, and you're a great chicken grandma. 🙂

Hi Gretchen, if you need resource information on chickens Darcy/ the funky chicken rescue in Vacaville California has rescued hundreds of chickens and roosters. All the roosters are kept separated from the hens. It's a beautiful sanctuary and Darcy is very much like you when it comes to animals as am I. Also if you break the eggs for the chickens they will certainly eat them. If they are laying regularly they need the calcium and other nutrients. In addition if you start a compost pile with fruit and veggie scraps along with the chicken poop, dried leaves and othe plant material you'll have a wonderful garden compost to grow a veggie garden. Although you're probably feeding the fruit and veggie scraps to the chickens
Also many egg laying hens will eventually get reproductive cancer, you may already know this which can cause fractures when egg laying. Because the chickens were bred for egg laying they will most likely taper off between the ages of 3-5 years old. There are many farm animal sanctuaries that discuss health problems in egg laying chickens, as I mentioned The Funky Chicken rescue, Miyoko Schinners farm animal sanctuary Rancho Compasion and Animal Place in Grass Valley California. They recently rescued over 300 hens from an egg laying operation so they are very knowledgeable about what to expect from wgg laying hens. From what you mentioned, your chickens will be with you for the rest of their life as opposed to what happens to them in egg operations so your chickens can potentially live to 10-14 years if they remain healthy.

The conclusion you came to about chickens is the conclusion I’ve come to about all pets. More often than not, the pets we intentionally or unintentionally breed into existence suffer unnecessarily because we fail them in one way or another.
I’ve had a few pets and vowed to never have one again. That lasted about 10 years until I reluctantly agreed to rescue a park kitty because it is therapeutic for my autistic son.
I don’t want the cat but of course I’m the main caretaker and the one he attached too. And he really does help my son so this is life now.

GRETCHENNN. These videos are so much better than many other wannabe podcasters haha. Though I'm biased with my vegan mind ofc. You're such a good storyteller and so well spoken. Very few filler words and exquisite detail.
I'm sorry you had to learn some hard lessons in this livestock journey, but it's definitely food for thought for those considering this lifestyle. Also ditto on the journey regarding the egg and veganism discussion. I more or less had the same revelations as you when researching a while back. It's a similar story for wool. It would be nice if we could have a symbiotic exchange with these animals, but alas, life just can't be simple can it? Perhaps in the distant future.
Also normally I listen to these in the background while working out BUT I happened to glance in the later half and saw footage of the new fam! 🐔 I had to sit down and watch the rest. Literally so happy for you and your new life partner. A serious man for a serious woman it sounds like. 💪 After hearing the rollercoaster that were these last few entries, I'm glad you can finally dial it back a little bit and enjoy some peace of mind. Best of luck to you both!
But yeah I had been holding off on commenting for a while since I was binging the series, but man oh man the drama you've been through. I'm sorry you feel that you need to apologize for a lot of the smaller things during your storytelling, like the whole trying not to sound like a victim thing or the "betrayal" whinging from certain viewers in the past. Frankly, this is YOUR channel and you should be able to run it as you see fit and speak your mind however you please. Well, within reason of course... but everything I've seen has been nothing but thorough and level-headed. People are just so difficult for no reason. I know you're in a period of your life finally settling down and finding peace, but I'm still wholly in my "people ain't SHIT" era. Not gonna lie, some of those past stories got me so heated. That's wholly on my end though, and I embrace it, lol. Don't ever feel like you're complaining too much, you're right on the money that context is everything to a good recounting.
Idk how many more of these entries you're planning on doing, but I'll be eagerly listening now that I'm up to speed.

excellent video.i would rather keep the backyard chickens, loved and well cared for, than whoever else may have bought them and left them freezing, garbage food, etc- I know many people with chickens, and care for some on friends properties when needed.I have never seen a chicken eat one of their eggs.I actually did that experiment when my friends went away, to see if it was true or not since they said that never happened. Most of the chickens layed eggs in their nest for a couple days to a week, left those eggs behind and started a new nest.So I see nothing wrong with keeping chickens that are loved and well cared for,to have eggs. They are not distressed at all when you take unfertilized eggs. They don't keep roosters so none of them have babies. One sometimes thinks there's babies but gives up and moves in a short time and goes back to normal. I never attempted to take her eggs as it would be cruel, but after she abandoned the eggs, they went into the dogs food. Why waste good eggs? I fully understand never buying eggs. The horror of factory farming alone is enough reason. And the ones in the stores that claim free range, etc, are not to be trusted unless you physically visited that farm. Free range can mean millions of chickens that live their entire lives inside a building, that just aren't in cages. If you look into it, you'll see the horrors there too. So cramped on the floor they can't even move, sick, dying and dead chickens all over. The birds walk around in mountains of filthy poop, and so on.The only way is to have your own, that way you are sure there is no cruelty,no freezing in winter or boiling hot in summer,a great diet and chickens are let out every day to get bugs and fresh air.

Your Teddy Bear looks just like our neighborhood cat who just passed. If you Google "Aldercat of Roger's Park" you'll see Chief. Almost identical.
About your video, veganism, and your chickens; I really love you!
    That's all.
Keep on being an animal lover and believe that everything you do makes a difference.

Really really really enjoyed this. Your insight is amazing. I used to live in the Canadian arctic and for the first time in my (vegetarian) life had a concept of a hunter/gatherer culture (Inuit cannot grow food on tundra, so they typically eat fish, seal, caribou, etc). They always use every single part of the animal... bones for needles, tools, jewelry; skins for clothing, fat for lamp oil and meat for consumption... and I turned my opinion around towards factory farming ONLY. Factory farming is so so so evil. But I suddenly saw the circle of life and how carnivore/omnivores were meant to live and it sure as hell didn't involve someone getting chicks/minnows/babies in the damned MAIL. I have always maintained that I am a vegetarian because I CAN be. If I couldn't be (ie arctic living with no access to grocery store) obviously I would reevaluate my life's choices, but so long as I CAN be a vegetarian, I will be one. And when I lived in the arctic, I did have access to a grocery store, and I was a vegetarian the entire time I lived there. And as I told you on a previous video, I am improving my vegan choices when I can and when I can substitute vegan for vegetarian, I do (I have a digestive disorder, so it's not always possible). I recently discovered an amazing vegan restaurant here, and I'm ordering from them constantly now!

Also, I used to get a weekly CSA basket from my local farmer (Tree & Twig in Wellandport Ontario Canada if you want to google) and my farmer was a vegan with backyard chickens and even a pig! She is SUCH a kindhearted woman. She is known in our area as the tomato lady, as heirloom tomatoes are her specialty, but the weeks that I would go pick up my basket, sometimes she would have not yet picked it (WOW imagine food picked moments ago just for you!) and I would sit in the garden and the chickens would come up to me to say hi. I remember Ruby, she was particularly lovely. I learned a lot about vegans owning chickens, and yes, she gave the odd egg away but never once expected them to lay eggs for her or her customers, they just lived on the property with her, sharing this planet. She also had a two-rooster problem at one point. Pedro, I remember, had to go. He was gorgeous, but vicious.

Yes! Well, sort of! They are a bit big to get fully airborne, but they get a running start & get about 1-2ft off the ground! Its so cute. They also soften their landing (from higher perches) by flapping down gently

No issue with a vegan having backyard rescue chickens, but if you’re using or giving their eggs to other people to eat, that would be legitimizing the reason for their systemic commodification. Best to give back the eggs to the chickens, scrambled to eat, for the calcium and phosphorus, or leave them in wood for wild critters. ☮️

@@Lussssssssssssss People are the ones who breed chickens into existence only to be enslaved, exploited, and unalived for their bodies and henstruations. So giving people animal products reinforces why they are exploited in the first place.

To me, the main problem with having backyard chickens other than what the comment you displayed said is that domesticated chickens make far more eggs than their natural undomesticated counterpart. Can you imagine being born as a species that is programmed to give birth over and over and over again? Additionally, the male chickens are culled as babies. Look up a video of it if you think you can stomach it. It changed my perspective seeing it.
I think what you’re doing for your husband is harm reduction, the primary ideal of véganism, and is a net good, but I think it enables the behavior and is fundamentally not vegan. I appreciate the intention behind what you’re trying to do and I understand how hard it can be to live with a non-vegan partner though.
