I think this is more important that a lot of "how to make beats" tutorial, dealing with the feeling of "i'm not inspired", "this sample doesnt tell me nothing". The importance to stop, take a step back and called it a day IS FINE. Thank you for showing it how it really is Marlow
Not only is Jazz a samplers heaven…..it’s amazing just to listen to on vinyl!! 80’s and 90’s sampling drew me to the original songs…then fell in love with jazz itself and have been a jazz head since! One original art form to another!
No matter how shitty something sounds at first, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS try it at half and double speed before you trash it completely. Found so many nice microloops from otherwise ass records this way
@@fade2blak91 Real talk, I try and make use of anything and everything (providing there's at least one nice sound in there that can be isolated) sample wise no matter how shitty the source material is
I just finished up a beat right now with a record I got from the dollar bin and it actually gave me another start for a beat as well. Never underestimate it but also know what you’re looking for
Its really interesting how us producers have such different ears for music in what we are listening for.. for me at 4:33-4:36 that loop with the spacey synth in the back sounds dope and could be a cool foundation for a different kind of beat. its always a diferent vibe and feel we are after. but its true sometimes the inspiration can get lost when you cant find what youre after. great vid showing the the ups and downs of the process! keep up the vids.
Every record has something on it. Just depends how you flip it, but I agree it is more satisfying to buy 1 solid record vs several to sift through. Thx for showing ur skills!!
Thank God for the dollar bins! Found a lot of real pearls through the years. When buying records for 5-10 dollars you might not take some 'risks' that you might take in the dollar bin.
Bro the fact that nobody is calling out at 7:13 that that song was used a lot in American Horror Story I think it was used in “Asylum” if im not mistaken! Such a great show
this session is exactly what i've been goin through lately. been listening to records for hours on end trying to find samples that matches with the beat. it can get really frustrating at times. good content as always

most records you can use unless it sounds too happy for hip hop now if you want that cheesy sound have at it but its good to recognize the wackness before you get too involved with the track
Man, when I was in college all I could afford was dollar bin and trading in records. If you knew how to clean records everything had its use and sometimes dust is good. Of course it wasnt like how it is now. Crazy the demand for records that where a dime a dozen.
I'd be curious to see how you organize all these small cuts that you've collected. Like, how does it work when you want to go back and use them? Do you remember how you named them and what they sound like? Do you have a good system for how to name the sample files so you can sort them by how they sound? Or do you end up just scrolling through a hundred short samples looking for something that will work with whatever you're making? Kind of a boring subject I guess, but maybe it'd make an interesting/useful video.
Try to find some rogier van otterloo, louis van dijk and thijs van leer records, not the classical stuff they made but the funky stuff. They made quite a lot of jazzy and funky stuff, all to be found om the dollar bin. Try neerlands hoop, Liesbeth list, Elly & Rikkert, Truus Simons...
Great video brother! I’ve started getting into streaming and content making but I’m getting a few copyright strikes..how are you avoiding those??? Is it how long your playing the sample? Or what else can help me avoid the strikes? Thanks again bro for all you do
Do you ever think of isolating vocals or other elements using software like iZotopes RX music rebalance? I’ve had a play around with some otherwise throw away samples due to them being super busy arrangements and the software cleans them up so well. It’s almost magic. To the point where you can remove reverb from tracks.
hey man great videos!! i was wondering, do you apply an eq between your turn table and your mpc? in orther words do you pre-eq or pre-filter your samples?
I have much fun watching these vídeos! Nice to se the search process and also have a clue of many different music styles! By the way, where do you use to buy these records? Is there a "must go" place in Porto (or maybe in Matosinhos)?
I just spend about 12 bucks on 40 albums. Out of those only 3 samples were usable. Literally took me about 7 hours to go through those albums. Had fun doing it but it’s was grueling defeat each useless track I listened too.
Damn this was me yesterday picking through straight trash! Only thing I’m buying from them for now on is soul (unless I find Maynard and Gato) And days like that make me super frustrated! Came across a Bill Evans record yesterday for $7 thinking i found a steal, it had to be the worst Bill Evans 80s electronic shit i ever heard 😩. I’m glad to know it’s not just me who goes through that cycle. Side note, i know you record the outs of the MPC what are you using to record your voice at the same time?
One thing that I have found about cuts, is that slowing down/speeding up the bpm or pitching down the song, might be when the magic happens. Low pass filters also does some magic. Of course, Marlow knows this already, except that this experiment might have been an attempt to get something that works right off the bat. Dollar bins are still good because you can get something good, dirt cheap and relatively unknown. Virtually any of the popular samples or any common song you can think off, can be got off the internet already.
