- Michael Solovyev. Baia del Silenzio/Bay of Silence, Sestri Levante, Italy. From the photo made by Eric Lang. @DANIELSMITHArtistColor watercolor paints on Saunders Waterford Rough paper, 22x15 inches.
Today we are moving back to Italy for a breathtaking landscape of Bay of Silence! Eric was in Sestri Levante in Italy for a conference in the fall of 2019. It took place in the Annunciation Monastery that can be seen on the center-left of the picture. He had 4 days with a cloudy sky and some rain, but on the last day there was this beautiful, blue sky and warm sun. Unfortunately, Eric had to leave at noon and couldn't stay to enjoy the beach... The Bay of Silence is protected from the sea by a sort of a jetty. The small sand beach is surrounded by those picturesque buildings painted with warm colors that contrast so beautifully with the blue sky and the sea and are almost a continuation of the sand. Then there are also those lovely small boats in the sea and on the beach, many covered with a striped blue and white tarp. The picture shows the almost empty beach and the monastery and was taken in the morning, before more beach-goers would arrive. Even though it was the end of September, the town was still vibrant and the weather warm (despite the clouds and some rain). People were friendly and the food was exquisite!! This is a beautiful bay! Eric hopes to have the opportunity to go there again!

Thank you very much for painting my photo! You did such a breathtaking painting, with superb reflections and beautiful contrasts!
I just love how you managed to capture the atmosphere of the place even though you have never been there...
It is really instructive to see how you approached the photo and how you painted it to understand the choices you made in terms of simplifications, tonal values and colours. Thank you so much!
It was my pleasure to paint your photo, Eric! 😊 It was very well-made, with breathtaking, calm and serene atmosphere!

Hi Michael! 🤗
Magnificent.
Thanks so much, Darnelle!
Un résultat époustouflant, les reflets dans l'eau, les tons utilisés pour les habitations... tout est ...magnifique !!
Bravo à vous
Merci beaucoup, Leyna!
This must be one of your best Michael, although they are all so good it’s hard to make such a statement. . Every painting teaches me the importance of contrast and tonal values, and not to be timid about strong washes. The painting illustrates perfectly the colours of Italian seaside towns. I must look up this bay and find out where in Italy it is. Thank you once again.
Thanks a lot for your support, Barbara! I am really glad you like the painting!

Amazing ❤
Thanks a lot, Roberto!
Amezing sky and reflections. I want to ask one question. In our country it is summer and temperature is above 30 degree. The wet paper become dry after ten minutes. What can I do ? How could I get watery effects? Thanks a lot for sharing .
Thanks Rashmi! You can use paper that loses water for longer time, like Saunders Waterford. Or you can attach your sheet to a wooden frame with staples and wet the backside as necessary! Check my last week's video for more explanations: ua-cam.com/video/biCrsGBAWN0/v-deo.html
Michael, you have taken me back to the summer of '65 --- not by the painting but by the setting. I had just graduated from high school and there was a beautiful trumpet solo song that, at first, I thought was what we call "Taps." But it was more. Such a haunting sound was "Il Silenzio." Listen: ua-cam.com/video/B804bBxIVpA/v-deo.html
Wow, thanks John! That is a beautiful song! Truly haunting but serene. Glad I was able to bring back memories with my painting!
Why don't you travel for South Korea, Sir?😂
