- The hard-hitting, undefeated World Super Featherweight Champion Gervonta Davis powered through Ricardo Nunez with a series of power shots in the second round to KO his opponent.
Davis showed some poise in his homecoming title defense. Nunez brushed him with a little right elbow as they walked by each other after the first round ended Saturday night before a sellout of 14,686 at the Royal Farms Arena.
Davis turned with a smirk, as if he suddenly noticed he was in a fight.
Then “Tank” steamrolled him, pummeling Nunez and forcing referee Harvey Dock to stop the fight at 1:33 of the second round to retain his WBA super featherweight title.
Davis (22-0, 21 KOs) landed two big lefts, then a right that throttled Nunez backwards. Dock stepped in immediately before chancing whether Nunez (21-3, 19 KOs) could continue.
“I saw (Nunez) get hit with a couple of big shots, and I decided to stop it,” Dock said. “I thought Nunez was defenseless at that point-and he was. Tank punched him and he kept on coming. Nunez dropped his hands and he was unable to defend himself so I have to stop the fight.”
As for Davis, he couldn’t have been more pleased. He spoke about going after more titles, namely IBF 130-pound champ Tevin Farmer. But mostly, he was happy he was able to put on a show for his hometown.
“It’s amazing to fight in front of my fans and friends,” Davis said. “It’s not only a win for me, but a win for Baltimore. He wasn’t ready at all times. I took advantage and I took the shot. I caught him with a good shot. I’m only 24 and I’m growing every day. I’m learning and progressing, I’m working.”
If he’s a work in progress, the finished product might be downright scary.
In the first, Davis unveiled his long, sharp jab. The southpaw showed great patience, considering all of the emotion charging the Royal Farms Arena. When the bell ended the round, Nunez threw out a nudge at the hometown guy as he walked back to his corner.
That seemed to grab Davis’ attention. Moments later, it was all over.
“I caught him with a really nice shot. That was it,” Davis said. “I have the WBA belt and I had the IBF. I want Farmer next. Tevin Farmer fought tonight and that fight can be made.”
It began with a flush left cross, followed by several more that snapped Nunez’s head back. Dock stepped in as the challenger sagged against the ropes.
Said Floyd Mayweather, who promotes Davis from his Mayweather Promotions outfit, “Tank is an unbelievable fighter. He’s something special. This is a pay-per-view star. He has the charisma and the will to win. He has a big heart and has a great team behind him.”

For the people who don’t know, people say that Nunez is a “cab driver” “trash” “bum” etc but to give you some context, he just knocked out Alfredo Santiago who went the full distance in a UD loss to Devin Haney. Nunez is NO scrub, he just isn’t popular or known. But he’s a legit fighter with big power. Davis made him look slight

Tanks whole body was off the ground when he leaped into that huge left. Power in boxing isn’t just about muscular strength, it’s really all about technique. I have been hit by a guy twice my size and weight in a street fight and it didn’t even phase me. People always worry about big guys, but a lot of the time it’s the smaller ones you got to watch out for! Tank is a beast and will become a legend by the time he retires!

It wasn't stopped too early. The ref knew and so did everyone else, the ending would have been a lot worse.
Should have let him fight on that was suspect but Davis defo would have won but you can’t stop the fight like that

I was mad the fight ended early cause I wanted tank to be able to show more of that same skill he showed in the 2nd round leading up to the stoppage. People think Tank is all power with no defense and that’s a false narrative. He can box if he needs to but he’s a killer at heart when it comes down to it.

Protect yourself at all times in the ring. For those who said that Davis hit on the break. Look back at 12.59 to 12.32. It would seem that Nunez expected a break from the Referee that did not come. Davis took full advantage and rightly so.

Never heard of Nunez but he seemed like a decent fighter but Tank was playing with him in the 2nd, kept coming forward dodging and blocking almost everything. Getting a feel and after he studied enough, he attacked.

At first I thought the referee stopped the fight too soon but looking at the replays he did the right thing. Sometime Fighters must be protected from their own willingness to take too much punishment.

When you look at 15:57 I don't know where my man was looking at but once he lost his focus here before getting hit with that 1st left hook it was over from there... every second to regrasp the situation, get back on tight defense and out of the corner matters. He just wasnt quick enough to take on the heat. Crazy 2nd round, Davis had the confidence.

Tank, is one of the few young fighters i like. With Floyd, i know he's going learn the business aspect and become super rich in addition to becoming a boxing superstar with his quiet demeanor. Nice young man.
The business aspect is almost more important than the fighting- nothing worse than promotors wasting a fighters time and effort just because they can get another fighter whenever they choose.
