A note on the Carcanos from Italy: Make sure to check inside the stock for white mold on the wood. They're in great condition for the most part but it's pretty clear they weren't stored in a humidity controlled environment. lol
Yea I’ve seen some of that white mold. When I took off the stock in the last one I got, there wasn’t any in there but there was only some in the rear sling mount channel.
I'd like to see a "faux misurp" niche kick in, with something like the Ruger M77 or Zastava LKM70 line, but with K98-style furniture, sights and bayonet lug. And a full five (or more) mag capacity, at minimum. The vacancy is there. No more rehashed fudd rifles, no more plastic Walmart junk, we want the real deal.
Back in ‘04-05, my local gun shop had a storeroom full of SKSs, mostly all original and some with engravings on the stocks in various languages, for sale at $109 each in a box. Back then a decent AK was under $400.
Late 90's I was buying Mosins (91/30, M44, M38) and K-31's for $79 and Yugo SKS's for $109. You could buy crates of Mosins at Dunhams. Wish I knew then!!!!
These beater rifles are worth maybe $100 each. You might have to buy two to swap parts in order to have a shooter. Most are wall hangers, unsafe to shoot and ammo is rare and expensive.
I worked with a guy back then that taught me a lot about life. He told me specifically in the moment to get an SKS! That was the only advice he gave me that slipped past in the moment! Dammit! :) Why God? LOL! Probably for the best at the time.
Im super partial to anything that shoots 7.62 ammo of any variety, maybe its luck but nothing from China, Russia, or Poland has ever let me down. Great video, it was super helpful!
The lack of ammo for the Carcanos is a deal killer if you plan to shoot it. And if you can find ammo its $50 a box. Same problem with Arasakas and the Mannlicher 1895.
Yeah unless you reload ammo thst works is hard to find since bore diameter is a bit weird if I remember right. Though with how hard reloading stuff is to get good luck

theres so many types of SKS i had a guy at a pawn shop try to sell me a beat up chinese BARREL ONLY for over a thousand telling me these things are selling for THOUSANDS you can easily get norincos for 4 to 6 and yugos for 5 to 7 seems like theres alot of auctions and sellers who dont realize there are very specific expensive sks but 99% of them arent rare or worth thousands
Pulled the trigger on finally getting an Enfield No 4. Luckily I got one that appears to be a late 1943 ROF Fazakerley production (cheaper machining and finish) that was most likely upgraded during or after the war (brass buttstock, Canadian stamped-steel adjustable rear sight, rifling with no discernible wear). Only downside is that .303 British is fairly expensive but I'd rather have modern non-corrosive cartridges than surplus of questionable condition.
Don’t downplay HXP (Greek) surplus ammo… I’ve shot a lot of it, non-corrosive and brass can be reloaded. Just picked some more up recently from a gunsmith

One lucky guy on a reloading forum has boxes of turkish mauser actions he picked up dirt cheap on the 80s or 90s. He has some cool projects of guns he built. 450 bushmaster in a Mauser rifle for deer hunting was one. Plus others he built for different calibers.
@@andrewgee241 $1500 with a matching bayonet and the rifle in great condition is a good deal, when you consider these are the same rifle model made by Mauser and used by the Wehrmacht during WWII. A matching German WWII K98k in that condition is almost $3000 today.
Nice video, it would be nice if we could get this stuff over here, all the bolt actions you mentioned are here but on the secondary market and rifle licensing is a pain in the arse. My biggest regret was not getting a M1886 Mannlicher rifle when the big crates of them came into the UK from Chile. We could get them worn out as wall hangers for £150, with broken or missing parts for £100, £300 for field grade and £500 for mint condition. I wanted to go for the £300 one. We don't get much surplus stuff coming into the UK, but we still get Schmidt-Rubins from time to time in amazing condition, I've wanted to pick up one but when I had the chance locally I spent my money on a Edo period wakizashi instead which I don't regret, but I still want that swiss goodness. I'm not interested in the deactivated stuff common over here, I like my guns working, we get loads of pistols, smg's and assault rifles coming into the UK but they are all deactivated. And seen as I don't have space for a gun cabinet atm and for that reason sold my shotguns and now don't have a licence, I just collect antiques and airguns, so lots of late 19th century bolt actions/straight pulls, muzzleloaders and revlovers on the menu for me, because those antique semi autos like the Bergmanns or those antique Austrian semi autos are too pricey for my poor ass, I don't have 10 grand for a gun, if I did I'd buy a APC or a armoured car instead 😊 At least we have a abundance of surplus trucks, tanks, apc's, jets, artillery and naval vessels in the UK, despite me not being able to afford them 😂 Edit: that originally was one block of text 😂
I got me a turk mauser with 440 rounds of steel cased romanian surplus ammo for 400 bucks out the door on a local gun trading forum. Stock has no cracks and the bore is mint which ik for turk mausers is uncommon. My best deal post covid on the same forum is a m38 6.5 carcano CLAPPED the hell out but with a shootable bore. 2 boxes of 6.5 andna steel surplus clip for 100 bucks. Yes you read that right. Your best bet imo is finding local gun forums and trading websites in your state and getting good with the guys on there. I just got me 900 rounds of 7.62x54R wolf non corrosive ammo for 45 cents a round. Learn the market value figure out what the average condition of the gun you want is and the price it sells for and then hunt it. Im currently hunting a 1896 swedish mauser and doing my research because manufacturer and condition matter. Rule of thumb tho is turkish and chinese surplus stuff is usually clapped out and the price typically reflects that.
I ordered the Cavalry Carbine from RTI for $229 Very Good, hand select bore. I should get it this week. 🤞 I have ordered 80 rounds, PPU so Im not expecting the best accuracy wise, but im hopeful.
For any new collectors that find themselves getting serious about the hobby look into getting a C&R FFL. It's not a total no brainer - do your research and understand the plusses and minuses. But it opens up a lot of options for a collector.
The big 3 i normally recommend are mosins, mausers and enfields. Carcano is close, but needing to source a clip puts people off. Besides that, the rest are not exactly beginner guns, more so oddities here in the US
Would not buy any of these except maybe the Swiss. Have 2 ‘03s, a No1 Mk3, 2 Swedes, a commercial M1, a 1917 and 3 Krags. Great rifles. The 03s, 1917 [can of worms] and Enfield were sporters that I rebuilt. And I reload for them all.
I had two sport rised smle rifles and I love them. I don't think most people realize how fast and smooth that bolt action is. Sadly there was a wildfire...
I remember when Chinese SKS rifles first came on the market. There were so many, and they were priced so cheap. I thought they were ugly, and swore I'd never buy one. I finally ended up buying one. Hard to resist with the price under $100. Turned out to be one of my favorite for shooting. Broke my heart when I had to let it go when I retired and downsized.
I purchased my first Mosin during the pandemic as I was trying to get into Milsurp a little bit more and it was a Hungarian M44….i paid 600 for it which everyone called me insane for but at the time we all thought that was the new price for passage.
@@SweetheartQuest it’s in really really good condition like unbelievable good with perfect wood which clearly has either been changed out or someone just loved the gun that much but no extra accessories just the gun and nothing else for that price during the pandemic…and in my area where I was looking and located that honestly at the time was considered a good price.

Be patient, buy what you like, are you going to shoot it?. SKS is still a great bargin... ammo is cheapish. The varity of Mausers is wide, the design is excellent... The Mosin Nagant also was a wide veriaty, the design works.

I've still got about 3 unopened crates of Mosin ammo for me that's a lifetime supply and then some. It's corrosive ammo but that's not so bad to clean up, you just have to do it. If you can find a Mosin at a reasonable price and some old Russian ammo it's still a great rifle to have some fun with at the range. Fire it at dusk and you'll be impressed by the fireball from that ammo.
Same i have 3 cans of it I walked around at a gun show trying to sell it 5 years ago for 180 then moved to 160 a can (of 440rds) and no one wanted them. Glad they didn't sell.
Spanish Mausers, especially the 1916 short, are really cheap for some reason. My local outrageously overprice gun store sells usable, but not pretty quality ones for around $300. Their Carcanos are around $500 for no good reason though.

@@BattlefieldCurator This gun store is kind of known in the area for overpricing most of their stuff. Those Carcanos have been sitting in their store for several years at least by this point. The 1916 is in a weird spot, the stores that actually know what they have sell it for a significantly higher prices than the stores that have no idea what it is. I found mine at a place where they labeled it as a "8x57 Mauser, Country: Unknown"
Honestly for the prices even beat up mosins are going for, its better to skip them. Unless you want it for the cool historical factor or just for fun. But for value you can get some good budget model guns that will shot more accurately for less and if you buy used you can get some high quality rifles as well. Gone are the days of cheap war surplus rifles and ammo that you can hunt with or take to the range.
Come to NH, every k31 i see for sale in a gun shop is 1k or more. M1 garands 1500 for a clapped out one. Finnish mosin especially if its a Sako they want 1400 bucks for it. And they sell which is crazy imo. Chinese sks still around 600 bucks , not to bad for that atleast.
Wow. Yea I’ve noticed that specific areas tend to have some high priced stuff in their stores. People buy them at those prices which keeps the shops from pricing them lower. Some online websites have cheaper deals. I definitely think that the CMP is the way to go for a solid M1 Garand because they got them for around 1k and even some fair to good condition ones are around 700.
Prices are crazy. I did my collecting late 80,s to 2000,s. Milled like new M48 69 bucks on sale. I bought a lot. My U.S. WW2 guns are non import marked. I can’t sell my kids want them. Minty BYF 41 Luger original holster and matching magazine under 1000. In my 20,s and 30,s. My friends would ask why do you like smelly old guns. Lol

Probably around the 400 range, but a good deal would be closer to 300 or under. Plenty of websites have the K11s as surplus now. Probably best to shop around
I just traded a 6.5 Swede for a 270 Rem with 4 boxes of ammo .22 Savage Auto rifle and 200 bucks because of the ammo Was hard to get and Is expensive and it was Sported. I’m thinking I got the good deal
The carcano was sabotaged. See it uses .267” bullets instead of .264” every other 6.5mm uses. Even ammo manufacturers didn’t know. The result was undersized bullets no gas seal and awful accuracy and performance. A similar issue happened with the 7.35mm guns. As a result Italian guns were thought of as inaccurate.
You would be surprised 😯 what people are interested in after playing video games with different types of rifle and vehicle combinations in them. The ones that are in 6.5×57, or 7mm×57and a couple of others that are great condition in the bore and a little bit scuffed up on the outside of the finish and stock. Especially the South American and Spanish/Turkish ones are nice also. I believe that Sweeds had a beautiful version of them in I believe and in the 6.5 or 6×55, is going to be a great, flat shooting caliber that your going to be able to taylor to you needs ;if you know a ballistician who you trust in, he make or load it for you if he has the dies, and equipment to do so. If not offer to get them some and the rest of the supplies, or you could ask them to help you get started with doing of your own. So many ways to go if you study and really do your due diligence if you research. Not for the impatient or people in a hurry.
The Italian Carcano rifles are VERY well built and accurate rifles. The reason that they haven't received a good reputation in the States is quite simply because they aren't standard. A 6.5 Carcano uses a 268 bullet diameter - NOT the 264 diameter that every other 6.5 uses. If you don't use the correct diameter bullets, you WON'T get good results and consequently WON'T like the rifle. A 7.35 Carcano uses a 300 caliber bullet - NOT the 308 diameter that every other 30 caliber rifle uses. Same thing applies - use an incorrect diameter bullet, and you WON'T get good results. Use of surplus ammo hides these details, but surplus Italian made ammo has become rather scarse. Are the rifles good? ABSOLUTELY. Are there details that you need to be aware of in order to be happy? Again, absolutely.
I was surprised he didn't mention the non standard bullet sizes, apparently even some commercial ammo used .308 bullets not .300 in the past, so it wasn't just reloaders messing up. I personally like the long rifles and the ts carbines, I think the folding bayonet cavalry carbines are kinda janky looking. Wouldn't mind a carcano to sit beside my ww1 Italian sword, which is a beast of a sabre
@travisrolison9646 - Yes, although Mosins are nominally 311/312. QC on Mosins wasn't the greatest, and you'll come across some as large as 314/315. The Finns rebarreled captured rifles and the specs call for 308/309. Finnish Mosins are definitely the better ones.
@@kirkboswell2575 yeah i got a rebuilt model, hex receiver for 120 a few years ago and slugged to bore. It was .312. Originally wanted to cast bullets for it and shoot reduced loads as a cheap shooter. Had trouble casting and getting molds for that size so didnt work well. Finding actual lead wheel weights for cheap got harder also. Then with the shortsges and prices and non availability of primers and powder it killed it. If I could shoot cast bullets for like 12cents a pop id do it, but now with prices its gone up to almost 30-40 cents a pop. Might as well use my 308 and have accuracy and not have to spend time casting.
@travisrolison9646 - Best option currently available is the Missouri Bullet Company. They make a lot of different calibers, and they are also Hi-Tec coated to prevent leading. Check them out. I think they make a 32-20 bullet that weighs 115 grains which would make a great plinker load and should be accurate.
I really don't understand the fascination with Mosin-Nagant rifles. I thought they were high at $100. If you're just looking to fill out your WW2 collection, I understand that, but $500 for a regular old Mosin is ridiculous. You can buy a decent AR or a decent, accurate modern bolt gun for less. Mil-surps are cool, but getting fleeced for junky old Mosins isn't cool at all.
It’s a standard issued WW2 rifle used by a major combatant with significant military history behind it. Like it or not but they have the same drive for collectibility as American and British and a German stuff does. Milsurp hasn’t been a cheap hobby for years dude. It’s a collectors game.

The Italian Carcano was very cheap because they are crap. I bought one in the early 1960s for about $19. I was only about 16 or 17 years old. I tried to put a shot on paper at about 50 feet and couldn't. I could shoot very well. I was on a rifle team at the time. There's no way Lee Harvey Oswald hit President Kennedy with 2 or 3 shots with that rifle.
Commerce Carcano rifle ammo isn’t up to original spec’s, I believe the original ammo was a .284 bullet and commercially-made is slightly less. So it makes sense that most rifles aren’t as accurate as they could be. Hand-loading is probably the best bet for Carcano’s.
Gun store near me wants $995 for a 1903 with a sewer pipe barrel. They want $1500 for a K31. They want hundreds on hundreds for rifles worth less than half of what theyre asking.
Made a little under the numbers say 6,000,000 @ the most. I would have to look it up and it might be something a little less than that like 5.5 or 5.8/.9 million of them. Sad part is that there's ships and warehouses full of them that need to get back to America and the Obama administration banned the import of these rifles home and get them back by contract that we signed with many nation's out there. The M1 Garand is very picky about the ammo as you day had to be loaded with 150 Grain bullets and the charge has to be researched but commercial ammunition will bend the operating rod, that is as given as the sun will rise in the East unless the world be lows up. I was lucky to get a very nice mosin at the start of 2023 for under 250 at a pawnshop, it was an anniversary gift from my wife.
I also got lucky and my dad gifted me his original COMPLETE Chinese sks

I have been using Steinel for quite a while, it definitely is the best that I’ve found though some other companies are competing in that space
if you're a canadian, get a lee enfield. they sell .303 brit everywhere here in eastern canada. canadian tire even had it last i was there

Not in western Canada. Nearly impossible to get .303 unless you buy online. Main reason I haven't bought a Lee Enfield.

I just got me 900 rounds of 7.62x54R wolf non corrosive ammo for 45 cents a round. Learn the market value figure out what the average condition of the gun you want is and the price it sells for and then hunt it. Im currently hunting a 1896 swedish mauser and doing my research because manufacturer and condition matter. Rule of thumb tho is turkish and chinese surplus stuff is usually clapped out and the price typically reflects that.
I ordered the Cavalry Carbine from RTI for $229 Very Good, hand select bore. I should get it this week. 🤞 I have ordered 80 rounds, PPU so Im not expecting the best accuracy wise, but im hopeful.

For any new collectors that find themselves getting serious about the hobby look into getting a C&R FFL. It's not a total no brainer - do your research and understand the plusses and minuses. But it opens up a lot of options for a collector.

The big 3 i normally recommend are mosins, mausers and enfields. Carcano is close, but needing to source a clip puts people off.
Besides that, the rest are not exactly beginner guns, more so oddities here in the US

I remember when Chinese SKS rifles first came on the market. There were so many, and they were priced so cheap. I thought they were ugly, and swore I'd never buy one. I finally ended up buying one. Hard to resist with the price under $100. Turned out to be one of my favorite for shooting. Broke my heart when I had to let it go when I retired and downsized.

I purchased my first Mosin during the pandemic as I was trying to get into Milsurp a little bit more and it was a Hungarian M44….i paid 600 for it which everyone called me insane for but at the time we all thought that was the new price for passage.

@@SweetheartQuest it’s in really really good condition like unbelievable good with perfect wood which clearly has either been changed out or someone just loved the gun that much but no extra accessories just the gun and nothing else for that price during the pandemic…and in my area where I was looking and located that honestly at the time was considered a good price.

Be patient, buy what you like, are you going to shoot it?. SKS is still a great bargin... ammo is cheapish. The varity of Mausers is wide, the design is excellent... The Mosin Nagant also was a wide veriaty, the design works.

I've still got about 3 unopened crates of Mosin ammo for me that's a lifetime supply and then some. It's corrosive ammo but that's not so bad to clean up, you just have to do it. If you can find a Mosin at a reasonable price and some old Russian ammo it's still a great rifle to have some fun with at the range. Fire it at dusk and you'll be impressed by the fireball from that ammo.
Same i have 3 cans of it I walked around at a gun show trying to sell it 5 years ago for 180 then moved to 160 a can (of 440rds) and no one wanted them. Glad they didn't sell.
I got my Mosin just before the market jumped. I got it for 160. Thought I overpaid back then.
1911 Argentina Mauser rechambered into .30-06 and not marked. I 'think' the rechambering was by Argentina.
Spanish Mausers, especially the 1916 short, are really cheap for some reason. My local outrageously overprice gun store sells usable, but not pretty quality ones for around $300. Their Carcanos are around $500 for no good reason though.

@@BattlefieldCurator This gun store is kind of known in the area for overpricing most of their stuff. Those Carcanos have been sitting in their store for several years at least by this point. The 1916 is in a weird spot, the stores that actually know what they have sell it for a significantly higher prices than the stores that have no idea what it is. I found mine at a place where they labeled it as a "8x57 Mauser, Country: Unknown"
Honestly for the prices even beat up mosins are going for, its better to skip them.
Unless you want it for the cool historical factor or just for fun.
But for value you can get some good budget model guns that will shot more accurately for less and if you buy used you can get some high quality rifles as well.
Gone are the days of cheap war surplus rifles and ammo that you can hunt with or take to the range.

Come to NH, every k31 i see for sale in a gun shop is 1k or more. M1 garands 1500 for a clapped out one. Finnish mosin especially if its a Sako they want 1400 bucks for it. And they sell which is crazy imo. Chinese sks still around 600 bucks , not to bad for that atleast.
Wow. Yea I’ve noticed that specific areas tend to have some high priced stuff in their stores. People buy them at those prices which keeps the shops from pricing them lower. Some online websites have cheaper deals. I definitely think that the CMP is the way to go for a solid M1 Garand because they got them for around 1k and even some fair to good condition ones are around 700.
Prices are crazy. I did my collecting late 80,s to 2000,s. Milled like new M48 69 bucks on sale. I bought a lot. My U.S. WW2 guns are non import marked. I can’t sell my kids want them. Minty BYF 41 Luger original holster and matching magazine under 1000. In my 20,s and 30,s. My friends would ask why do you like smelly old guns. Lol

I just traded a 6.5 Swede for a 270 Rem with 4 boxes of ammo .22 Savage Auto rifle and 200 bucks because of the ammo Was hard to get and Is expensive and it was Sported. I’m thinking I got the good deal

The carcano was sabotaged. See it uses .267” bullets instead of .264” every other 6.5mm uses. Even ammo manufacturers didn’t know.
The result was undersized bullets no gas seal and awful accuracy and performance. A similar issue happened with the 7.35mm guns. As a result Italian guns were thought of as inaccurate.
You would be surprised 😯 what people are interested in after playing video games with different types of rifle and vehicle combinations in them. The ones that are in 6.5×57, or 7mm×57and a couple of others that are great condition in the bore and a little bit scuffed up on the outside of the finish and stock. Especially the South American and Spanish/Turkish ones are nice also. I believe that Sweeds had a beautiful version of them in I believe and in the 6.5 or 6×55, is going to be a great, flat shooting caliber that your going to be able to taylor to you needs ;if you know a ballistician who you trust in, he make or load it for you if he has the dies, and equipment to do so. If not offer to get them some and the rest of the supplies, or you could ask them to help you get started with doing of your own. So many ways to go if you study and really do your due diligence if you research. Not for the impatient or people in a hurry.

The Italian Carcano rifles are VERY well built and accurate rifles. The reason that they haven't received a good reputation in the States is quite simply because they aren't standard. A 6.5 Carcano uses a 268 bullet diameter - NOT the 264 diameter that every other 6.5 uses. If you don't use the correct diameter bullets, you WON'T get good results and consequently WON'T like the rifle. A 7.35 Carcano uses a 300 caliber bullet - NOT the 308 diameter that every other 30 caliber rifle uses. Same thing applies - use an incorrect diameter bullet, and you WON'T get good results. Use of surplus ammo hides these details, but surplus Italian made ammo has become rather scarse. Are the rifles good? ABSOLUTELY. Are there details that you need to be aware of in order to be happy? Again, absolutely.
I was surprised he didn't mention the non standard bullet sizes, apparently even some commercial ammo used .308 bullets not .300 in the past, so it wasn't just reloaders messing up.
I personally like the long rifles and the ts carbines, I think the folding bayonet cavalry carbines are kinda janky looking. Wouldn't mind a carcano to sit beside my ww1 Italian sword, which is a beast of a sabre
Same with the mosins. Their 30 cal bullets are .310 i think and not the .308 unless you get a finish model
@travisrolison9646 - Yes, although Mosins are nominally 311/312. QC on Mosins wasn't the greatest, and you'll come across some as large as 314/315. The Finns rebarreled captured rifles and the specs call for 308/309. Finnish Mosins are definitely the better ones.

Originally wanted to cast bullets for it and shoot reduced loads as a cheap shooter.
Had trouble casting and getting molds for that size so didnt work well. Finding actual lead wheel weights for cheap got harder also. Then with the shortsges and prices and non availability of primers and powder it killed it.
If I could shoot cast bullets for like 12cents a pop id do it, but now with prices its gone up to almost 30-40 cents a pop.
Might as well use my 308 and have accuracy and not have to spend time casting.
@travisrolison9646 - Best option currently available is the Missouri Bullet Company. They make a lot of different calibers, and they are also Hi-Tec coated to prevent leading. Check them out. I think they make a 32-20 bullet that weighs 115 grains which would make a great plinker load and should be accurate.

I really don't understand the fascination with Mosin-Nagant rifles. I thought they were high at $100. If you're just looking to fill out your WW2 collection, I understand that, but $500 for a regular old Mosin is ridiculous. You can buy a decent AR or a decent, accurate modern bolt gun for less. Mil-surps are cool, but getting fleeced for junky old Mosins isn't cool at all.
It’s a standard issued WW2 rifle used by a major combatant with significant military history behind it. Like it or not but they have the same drive for collectibility as American and British and a German stuff does.
Milsurp hasn’t been a cheap hobby for years dude. It’s a collectors game.

The Italian Carcano was very cheap because they are crap. I bought one in the early 1960s for about $19. I was only about 16 or 17 years old. I tried to put a shot on paper at about 50 feet and couldn't. I could shoot very well. I was on a rifle team at the time. There's no way Lee Harvey Oswald hit President Kennedy with 2 or 3 shots with that rifle.

Commerce Carcano rifle ammo isn’t up to original spec’s, I believe the original ammo was a .284 bullet and commercially-made is slightly less. So it makes sense that most rifles aren’t as accurate as they could be. Hand-loading is probably the best bet for Carcano’s.
I bought a CMP-Special years ago, (it had a new stock and new barrel) once sighted in, it has become a absolute tac-driver!

Made a little under the numbers say 6,000,000 @ the most. I would have to look it up and it might be something a little less than that like 5.5 or 5.8/.9 million of them. Sad part is that there's ships and warehouses full of them that need to get back to America and the Obama administration banned the import of these rifles home and get them back by contract that we signed with many nation's out there. The M1 Garand is very picky about the ammo as you day had to be loaded with 150 Grain bullets and the charge has to be researched but commercial ammunition will bend the operating rod, that is as given as the sun will rise in the East unless the world be lows up. Happy shooting the M1
