Dude! Awesome project! I too am a hoarder of all wood scraps, that's how I found your video searching for storage ideas!
My shop wall is a lighter blueish gray (Cottage Blue I believe) with french cleats painted black, but I love your stained look (I'll have to decide black or stained). After viewing this, I bought the pipe yesterday and already have the lumber, so this weekend is GO TIME!!!
Love your channel, you just earned a new subscriber!
“Phillips heads & flat heads are the devil.” Couldn’t agree more. That’s why I used Robertson’s head screws & driver whenever I can. One recommendation if I may; there are end caps available for conduit pipe, you should get some to avoid nasty cuts if you bang into the pipes.
A quick search on Amazon for “EMT pipe cap” will do you.
time to fire up my 3d printer :D
152 views in 11 minutes. You are definitely doing things right Michael.
Only Michael could make a lumber rack look luxurious! Looks fabulous!
Steel is the true backbone of human civilization. It's such an amazing material yet so cheap.
I wasn't sure how strong this was going to be, but that test at the end, I'm sold! This is my next project, thanks Mike! I''m Subscribed.
Welcome to the channel Mikey!
Perfect timing Michael. I've been planning on doing a project like this in the next couple months. Now, I know exactly how I want to do it. Thanks for the tips.
Great project and detailed instructions. Your videos are always fun!
Fantastic build, fantastic entertainment. Thank you Michael.
Terrific job on that lumber rack Mike! That should last you a lifetime. Oh, and I agree with another poster, cover the ends of those pipes with rubber covers just to be safe...... 👍👍😉😉
Sweet project, been going to make a rack in my shop, now I know what I'm doing, thanks for the video, love it!!
Great video Michael!! You have just solved a life long lumber storage question Thank you and I hope that leaving your 9 to 5 is working the way you planned. you are an inspiration.
LOVE IT! A great idea. You solved the problem I’ve been stewing about for months.
That is so awesome to hear! Thank you so much!
Hi from sonora, Mexico, I really love all your videos, and you inspired me to make all these artwork. thanks a lot
Hello Jairo! 🇲🇽
GREAT and FINALLY!!!
Directions I can follow.
THANK YOU
Thank you for sharing, you did a great job!!!!
Very nice well done and thanks. Love that it's simple design and cheap.
This is amazing! I have to build a huge lumber rack this spring. I might use this idea for the cut-offs because they are hard to stack and store on end.
Thanks for this video.
Wow, this is the neat and clean way to do it. Thank you for doing the weight test. Now, I am comfortable trying it in my garage. 👍
Thats sweet. Pardon the pun but that was sweetest modular rack I've seen yet on UA-cam. This is a must build.
As soon as you said you are a hoarder of wood I exclaimed "Amen"! and paused the video just to type this!!! Now I'll watch the rest of this build.
I’m reviewing your video again today because I’m starting this project when I finish watching. Thank you again for your energetic, informative, excellent videos. Cheers!
I want to see pictures!
@@MichaelBuilds It won’t be as pretty as yours - I’m skipping the “lipstick” (stain/paint and clearcoat). I need it to match my Frankenstein’s Monster lumber cart I just finished out of random, unmatching scrap wood, even some underlayment. It’s an unsightly thing, but it’s built like a tank. 😁
Thanks!
WOW! Thank you SO MUCH Frankie!!! This really means a lot to me man. Welcome to the channel brother!
Awesome idea and will be using it when I build my shed
This approach wins out of all the other methods or approaches I've researched. Thanks!
You got it Doug! Thank you!
@@MichaelBuilds Only modification I'm considering is because I only need less than the upper half of this, to go over an existing setup. Thinking pocket hole screws would be fine. Not planning for a ton of weight on here.
Nice looking shelfs and great video thanks for sharing all your videos
Hope you have a good weekend
I love this project and the strength is amazing! I might put covers on the ends of the metal pieces though. For both safety and aesthetics 🐝🤗❤️
Sorry I just now have a thumbs up because I been watching on my tv instead of my phone … love your videos…
Just what I'm looking for! Thanks for a very good video.
I had this setup before. I got tired of struggling to get the stuff under the other stuff on any shelf. I switched to vertical storage. Like Homedepot does it for planks and trim. Keep the pipes where they are and use horizontal only for 3ft or smaller lengths. Trust me it’s better this way. Looks great with the stain too. Good job!
It's amazing how you put out so much great information in such a short amount of time. Great job! Great channel! 👌
Thank you so much John! You have no idea how much that means to me!
This guy is fun, very entertaining, and I just found my new storage solution and house paint color. Thanks, man. Looks great!!
THANK YOU!
I wish you made a video for all the projects I’m trying to attempt. Your presentation style is so good
Oh wow! Thank you so much Tyler!
I like it! 7 bags!! Stronger then I’ll ever put on it!
Beautiful!!
Michael, you're amazing👍👍👍
Excellent video!! Finishing up my rack.. Painted mine as well.. Thinking about cutting some walnut plugs on cnc for open ends of conduit
Like that design. I'm going to have to do that with a little modification in my shop. It will definitely solve an issue I have.
I so enjoy watching your videos!! Keep up the awesome work. 🙂
I so enjoyed reading your comment! ☺️
Dude... you're freaking radical !!! Love this video and WOW !!! I'm a first-time viewer and did subscribe. Looking forward to the next video, LORD willing, I will be implementing this into my plans. Thanks so much for sharing.
❤🎉fiquei maravilhada com seu projeto. Edtou pensando em,usar para criar prateleiras para nosso estudio. Grata por testar e compartilhar.🎉
Rad project my friend!! And I'm with you, ya had to stain and polyurethane it!! Shop is coming along nicely!!
I will do it this way! Thank you
Note if you have to mount it to a concrete wall I found that 5 1/2'' long by 1/2'' wide expansion bolts work well
Great presentation!
Thank you so much!
Nice Job !!
Perfect timing. I was just about to order adjustable shelf system that would be a lot more expensive.
Damn you. I just got done building a fairly quick storage rack after trying to build a cleat storage rack that just wasn't strong enough and yours is way better and as versatile as I wanted. Looks like I'm redoing it. Great video and subscribing to you. Love the paint color too!
Lol 😂 “damn you!” I get that a lot… mostly from my wife lol 😂
Great Video my friend
Wow Michael you do have a nice rack. 😉 Guess I need a new stud finder. Mine doesn't find the stud like yours does. 😇 Love the lumber rack. The stained 2x4's look good against that color on the wall. Weight test was cool. Again a great informational video.
There's a litte bit of that Adam Savage energy going on here ❤
Lol - I made this rack back in the 90s in my first shop. I think it originated as a Shop Notes magazine project if I remember correctly. That EMT never let me down.
Geologist approved. Thanks for sharing. As always, well done.
It's wild how you call those 4x2 timbers "8x2x4s"😂
Great sponsor for Rapid Set
Get a piece of 3 in PVC with a cap thin the paint a bit and dip your EMT in Rust-oleum. Save a bunch on paint and no overspray.
Fantastic build!
A trip to the scrapyard you mat find your heavy wall pipe.
Just massive drips ??????
Hi Michael, TIP, if the the wood stock gets too heavy, slip some 5/8 or 3/4 re-bar pieces into your existing tubing.
And slip some larger dia. pvc pipe around them if the steel's indenting the wood
Retired industrial electrical/millwright contractor here. I spent over 50 years bending that stuff,,,,Trust me the wood will fail long before the conduit. .
Good stuff. I bought one of those Bora racks a while back. I love it, but I'm kind of wishing I did this because it's well over three times the storage space.
Hey Michael! How did I miss this video! I love the lumber rack! Lol I love the stud finder! It's never wrong! haha! 😄 💕 I have a future video request. Could you build a jetted bath tub support deck onto an ALREADY installed bath tub? I need some ideas lol Love ya! Thanks for the awesome videos! 🥰
I have the store bought option (bought on clearance years ago for like $5) works awesome. But now i want to redo it bigger and better :)
Now for lumber and Michigan winters to break
I thought 4 bags max and the fail was on 5. But you made me a believer of the strength of EMT. Thanks for going that far.
Whenever I am doing a project on a wall that has yet to be painted is I transfer the center of each stud to a pencil mark on the floor. Just sayin'. Great video bro.
Great idea, I'm going to do this before i close up my garage wall. Save a lot of time when i build this rack and the shelving above
@@justnmcd My studs are always plumb because I use fire blocks for d/w backing but you can always put a tic on the ceiling if they are not plumb
Any Brainiaks out there think there would be much change in strength if the conduit was mounted @ 5 or 7 degrees?
BTW, I love that you found a way to test this to failure...reminds me of Mythbusters!
Down here in the Missouri Ozarks we have to plug every hole that exists anywhere, tools especially. The local mud DAUBER wasps will fill ANY hole that exists with mud nests. My 5HP air compressor motor burned up from mud nests. All my airline hose connectors were filled with mud, & I had to use drills to open them up again. I now cap or plug anything with holes they can access. The secondary reason to cap or plug is the sharp edges.
Thank you for testing the weight capacity. I want to use this method for a book shelf. The shelf will hold a good old fashion encyclopedia set. The set claim the metal shelf that held them.
Awesome build
What color stain did you use?
Wipe the EMT down with denatured alcohol 1st and the paint will adhere much better. BTW, several years ago built a similar rack out of 4x4's but anchored them in the floor to a sill plate 2' off the wall at the base and directly against the ceiling wall at an angle so I could store sheet goods behind it.
I hung my kayak to a fence with this method!
Phillips head and Flat head ARE THE DEVIL for sure, Torx for life here, it's time to eliminate the old technology of Philips and Flat.
What color stain did you use? Probably the best looking stain I’ve seen on pine lumber. As always great work dude!!
Just when I thought my mind was made up...BAM...yours is cheaper and stronger. I'll save French Cleats for tools, etc.
Lol 😂. That’s what I’m talkin about!
I like it…now if needed you could plug the end and fill with sand or cement …but it doesn’t look like it’s needed in most cases…💪
You are so smart and crazy at the same time. Clearly, we all need to be praying for your wife. LOL Another fun and entertaining video. Now why don't you think about building a guitar...using wood!
Lol absolutely hahaha 🤣
Looking good does cost a little more, but it is good for the soul.
Hi Michael, I'm from Australia 🇦🇺, just wondering what timber your 2x4's are made from please? Is it pine or hardwood? Looks great! Love the idea and think it will work well in my shed, thanks for the idea and inspiration 🙂
I would love to see you build an outdoor ping pong table out of concrete. My old college had one and it was a blast. How would someone make a 5 foot wide concrete countertop?
Yay!
Yep, I have to join the "damn you" club. Stunning results, definitely have to consider this in building my shop. My only wonder/concern is whether the painted rods wear off against the lumber. Leaving marks on the wood or peeling the paint from the conduit...
Did this guy used to carve rocks, and all kinds of other cool things??
I was going to say I thought the wood was going to warp over time causing the pipes to sag, or maybe the EMT would bend since it’s not designed to hold weight; but that concrete test seemed pretty clear how robust it is, especially spread out.
What about making the top pipes 36" to 42" long to handle sheets of plywood laid flat high enough to walk under? Might need to beef up the pipes, but a few sheets probably wouldn't be a problem.
Dear Stranger, I really enjoy watching your presentations, and honestly find they align with things I would want to do around my home if I were as productive as you. A sincere message of appreciation for your presence on the internet, signed, me.
Thank you so much sir!
Wow. I'm #1 ?

Damn you barely beat me 😅
I agree with the Devil 🤘 😈 👌 Remark.
What i great idea! And i immediately started building it myself :) I made a mistake thinking the conduit diameter was the outside diameter...I use scaffolding tubes with an outside diameter of 21.3 mm and a hole of 25 mm (in exterior okoume plywood of 5,2cm by 8cm), leaving me with a gap of 3,7mm so now the tubes do not fit snugly. Does anyone have an idea if this gap is too big and if this could become a problem? (sorry it is in milimeters.. i am from the Netherlands..)
Question: Is it necessary to have the 2x4s set on the floor or can they be suspended from the wall? Would the screws support the weight?
If you need more strength out of your tubes fill them with sand & cement the will be as string as solid steel
Just gotta know. 3/4” pipe, 1” holes?
💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I'm so frustrated you painted the boards because now I know what it looks like which makes me want to go through the trouble lol.
Lol 😂
If you go to a plumbing wholesaler they can get you the black pipe a whole lot less than the big box stores.
I hoard wood too and keep thinking I’d build a rack wall adjacent to my workshop. The only problem is I’ve got a 1,000+ pound pig that stays where I want to build the racks.
Not sure that recip blade was long enough.
How did you injure your left thumb while painting? Monty would have turned that into a safety video. LOL
Lol 😆 you’re right about that HAHAHA. I sanded my thumb during an unrelated project
Not a bad idea at all using 2x4s and EMT and you did a very good job building and installing it but. Just an FYI for ya. Painting galvanized EMT is not the smartest thing you can do. - To get the paint to stick properly at all you have to use an mild acid first. A good primer doesn't hurt a thing, either . ,,,, The pro painters in real jobsites absolutely hate it when they have to paint new EMT. . - Plus if you look around you can find bright coat EMT that looks like it's chrome plated. which is going to look one hell of a lot better then barked up black painted EMT with big silver scuffs You can take paint off improperly prepared EMT with your fingernail so it doesn't have a prayer against hardwood,,,,, If you are going for cosmetics (in a stock rack ???) far as I'm concerned hrome is like the ultimate. (Kind of like painting a nickle plated Colt flat black)
A year later, still holding up?
Hahaha!! But if you WERE a geologist...!
As manly as the tools and finished product are, I can’t help but notice the meticulous steps, measuring, marking and attention to detail is like sewing with wood. Cooking with metal.
You're not a geologist? So you don't stare at lady bits for a living?
This is precisely why wannabe TV presenters should not appear in their own YT vids.
