Riley's GENDER Confusion in INSIDE OUT...

Поділитися

  • Опубліковано 9 гру 2023
  • Have you ever thought about the deeper story in Inside Out? Rumor has it that Riley might be confused about her gender, which could explain why both girls and boys are controlling her emotions. In contrast, her mom's emotions are all girls, and her dad's emotions are all boys. The theory goes that Riley's dad is angry because of her gender confusion, which is probably why Anger's always in control, because she's not becoming the daughter he expected. Riley's mom, on the other hand, is said to be sad about it, explaining why Sadness is predominantly in control. The family might be in a bit of chaos, but they still love Riley for who she is.

Two Boys go bowling: They must be gay.
Two girls kissing: They're just good friends.
Girl has a boyfriend: I think she's gender confused.
My theory is a specific number of the *audience* is confused about Riley's gender, while Riley herself is just being herself.
Maybe she's more of a tomboy. Remember those?
When I was a little boy, I played with the girls. I played with dolls. I had a play kitchen.
Riley's male emotions are probably there because the movie would be very female-heavy. Which probably came off as a risk that might alienate little boys.
The same thing almost happened in Legend of Korra. But the test audience didn't care in that instance.
Probably wouldn't have cared with Inside Out either. since the movie was about a girl coming to terms with her emotions and had a message about embracing sadness sometimes.

This movie was made some 10 years ago, and I personally believe that the main emotions that are “in control” e.g Riley’s joy, Dads anger, moms sadness, are just the emotions we’re feel more than others. I’m sure Riley’s Dad is angry with his work (as pictured a few times in the movie), Riley’s mom is sad she’s losing time with her husband (hinted more subtly) and Riley is expected to be happy.
Additionally, the film probably included both girls and boys in Riley’s head to appeal to both genders.
There’s is absolutely nothing wrong with gender confusion, but I’d like to point out the LGBTQ was practically a shadow when this was made, and therefore most likely not thought of

Riley is still young, so her emotions are all different, since she can't define herself as a person just yet. Perhaps it also shows that some emotions are more associated with gender, for example anger is male, and disgust and sadness - female. Or it could be that dad's appearance and behavior IS what inspired the look of anger in Riley's head.

People in here saying "its just a cartoon" like real people don't put months of thought and work into creating a movie like this aside, something I would like to add is that the boy at the end who panics because a girl spoke to him and only has a few seconds of screen time has all male-leaning emotions as well; a kid her age.
Disney, and Pixar especially in recent years are both slowly getting more progressive over time to share more stories than just heteronormative plots, and as a transgender person myself, I always resonated with Riley, her emotions being a mix of either portrayed gender being something i picked up on very early into watching it for the first time, and something i, as a non cisgender person, connected to most about the film.
With the teases of the second movie coming soon, though anxiety was the only one depicted in the trailer, the poster seems to continue the mixed gender theme with the new emotions (though it isn't easy to distinguish given how little of the new ones are shown, it just feels like the pattern to me).
not sure how i feel about the parents piloting emotions being the "result" of rileys possible gender identity, and i more so chalked that up to relationship issues between the parents we aren't directly shown, but I am a beliver of the gender identity theory for riley alone. IF Pixar is going down this route, and I say that as a big IF as much as I like the theory, if they played their cards right and spoke to actual queer people, i have a gut feeling these kinds of things wont actually be revealed until a third movie. Though you can be pretty certain of your gender identity at a young age, you are still figuring yourself out in that time and new labels can be a lot. Every person is diffferent of course, but in my own personal experience I've been questioning if i was trans since i was 5 (i was in the ER a lot as a kid so learned what trans was cause of an mtf lady who was in there a lot for complications with her surgery), by 12 I was certain I wasn't cisgender, and i tried different labels all the way until I was 18 and found that trans suit me best where i wished to transition into anything but my born gender. 24 now and in the very slow process of medically transitioning.
What I'm saying overall is if the theory is true, it likely will just be queer-coded until several movies in the future when riley is old enough to be 100% positive with her identity.
But at the end of the day, it is Disney, so they might just continue to queer-code or just full on drop it just to stop the possibility of lgbt theories on one of their films before its out in it's full story. Gotta keep the company all 'good and christian' after all 🙄

It isn't stupid though. I knew kids who had gender dysphoria at 11. Feeling disconnected from the set of social norms placed on you isn't an 18+ only experience.
I don't think that's the reason Riley has different gender emotions (I think it's so the movie appeals to more than one demographic), but it's not an insane concept. I knew a kid who had already started going by they/them pronouns at 12ish.

I expect that the genders of her emotions represent her personality. She has her fathers anger shown in the scene where Goofball Island falls, her mothers sympathy from sadness, shown in the ending, and so on

The reason the emotions are both genders is because they also wanted to appeal to boys. Most boys want other male characters in the movie besides the dad

The real, not over-thought and preachy reason. Pixar wanted to make a film that featured a diverse cast of characters that both girl and boy movie goers could relate to. Not every piece of media has to have some deep, subliminal/unspoken message. 🤦‍♂️

I took it has kids are still discovering themselves and their identity. she could be a tomboy, a trans boy, nonbinary, genderfluid etc and the fact she has both genders in her while her parents do not only shows she's still on her journey while they're already matured

I like to think they develop and change as she ages, but they start out as the same genders as the parents she "inherited" uer emotions from. Her passion (anger) and her fear (anxiety about moving, etc.) are from her dad.
Her joy, empathy (sadness), depression (sadness), and disgust come from her mother.

    Guys it’s nothing that complex
    It doesn’t mean she’s a boy or a whatever
It’s just how the movie industry works
What I mean like that is if it was just female emotions then the movie would only stand out to girls so they needed male ones to to make it stand out to boys and girls.
Hopefully they don’t go with the changing gender route because it would ruin the movie (for me personally idk abt u) but it’s Disney so yeh….
