I was 10 years old in '87. Came down on Christmas Morning to find a portable TV set under the tree that my grandparents had bought me, the first I'd ever owned. I remember this being one of the first shows I watched. Oh, the memories.....

I was 28, but I've never seen this episode. It was big in new Zealand and it still runs- I think? We were years behind but they ran many episodes in a week to catch up.

I watch these after dark with the lights out for the nostalgia. Reminds me of when I was a boy, watching at the feet of my granny’s bed!

Jean left this show actually a lot younger than I thought she did. She was only 61. Seemed very old to me when I was a kid in '87

Eh soaps have never been watchable imo at the end of the day it's just cheap evening TV. Soaps aren't exactly on the same caliber as other shows

@@masterknife8423 Coro has that Dickensian something (well it did anyway) that other soaps don't.
Fun fact: Episode 1 of Coro was broadcast on a date closer to Victorian times than to our own day.

Well...nowadays if soaps were like this, I think many would find them boring. But I do agree that nothing beats the classic.

In the mid 90s I lost my passport while abroad. British Airways kindly agreed to fly me back to the UK (no airline would do that these days sadly). When I arrived the Immigration wanted to be sure I was British. They asked me a series of fast questions.
One of the questions I distinctly remember was "Who is Bet Lynch?" - of course any Brit could answer that easily back then and a non Brit would not have a clue - very clever question I thought. They let me enter with no passport.

It's basically Eastenders relocated up North when it comes to plots:the show's setting is incidental🎩

I come here often watching the oldies cuz I think social media is not healthy for my mind. I think summat is wrong with me when I am recommended watching tireless stupid clips via Facebook. When I watch this is reminds me of happiness. I guess UA-cam does have some uses.

Ironically,it was this show's Richard Hillman which influenced all the other soaps to get a friendly neighbourhood killer (except, maybe,Brookie which had already dipped its finger in that and other violent pies)🎩

Corrie felt threatened by Eastenders in the ratings and by ditto and Brookie re the popularity with younger viewers,so they started doing similar plots and never looked back (unfortunately)🎩

Hilda increasingly looked like a character left behind from another era of the show after Stan died (the show steadily shed older characters from the 1st 29 years thruout the 80s,replacing them with younger ones)🎩

It's always funny watching old episodes featuring Audrey when Alf was also in it and seeing how different she was then. She was mainly a comedy character then who came across as annoying to a lot of people with her "cut above the rest" attitude and being mainly interest in spending lavishly and enjoying herself. Although these personality traits can still pop up slightly every so often, ever since she's been widowed she's been a far more serious character in the show involved in a lot of high drama stories, and is often the voice of reason in situations and is someone people can turn to for advice as she shows a more caring, sympathetic side in the last 20 years or so. Back when she was married to Alf, Audrey would have been the last person people would have turned to for advice, as they probably would have gotten silly responses back.
