Excellent points. I've always cringed a bit when some "experts" say new shooters should NEVER buy a revolver as their first gun. As you pointed out, there are too many considerations in making that decision rather than making a blanket statement of absolutes.

I feel more comfortable with a revolver. Just less likely to have an accident or malfunction. It's simple to use yet makes you a more disciplined shooter due to the long trigger and lower round count. Pull trigger it goes bang.

Another important fact is the person’s abilities to clean and maintain the weapon. Hand strength is important for racking, take down etc.

And mechanical ability, some people (speaking about a friend of course), have issues with the simplest mechanical functions of take down and assembly. In that case a revolver is the best solution.

One of my original thoughts is that a semi-auto can jam and a revolver can't (although there was one occasion that it has but it's rare). I own both and feel secure that the semi-auto is dependable as a carry gun only because I carry with the same ammo I use at the range and never had a malfunction. No stove pipe, no failure to feed, no delayed primer problems, no nuttin. I also clean and lightly lubricate the gun after each practice session. And lastly, the semi-auto can carry more than twice the number of rounds as the revolver. With either gun, you still have to be fortunate that it will work if you ever need it to.

Both platforms are equally capable, viable, modern, and useful. It really depends on each individual. Options are great.
People such like Massad Ayoob who's been in this stuff all his life, has a deep understanding of the legal world (courts, layers, judges), has said neither is greater than the other, uses both, sees the strengths and weaknesses of both.
A good gun store person will be first and foremost a LISTENER, and won't project his/her own preferences and biases into what a customer needs.

Spot on. I also weigh the prospects and averages of needing more than 5 or 10 (speed loader) rounds. Everyone's personal experience and environment is different. I do weigh the odds of getting in a protracted defensive battle and in my daily life in an extremely rural location, five 38+P is enough.
The video has a good thought provoking message. Train, research your options and needs.

I like your MT/AT metaphor. Revolvers have less that can go wrong if you're not a regular shooter and want something that just works. The trade-off for the added complexity is having more rounds to shoot. You might also want to cover the different actions in revolvers and how some have shrouded barrels and things like that.

  • @WildernessNocking
    @WildernessNocking Рік тому +1

If you choose to go the revolver route, go- with something that is a 3” barrel for your first. A snub nose is truly an experts handgun when it comes to accurate shot placement at anything other then a “get” off me range. Compromised sighting system and heavy recoil in a small package is tough and not enjoyable to learn on. In a defensive situation or heck even the range the point of shooting is hitting. Learning on an easier to handle platform allows you to learn those fundamentals easier.

As someone who ran out of ammo in a 1974 gunfight my vote is always w/the semi auto for on duty use. That said in retirement my risk factor is relatively low so a J Frame or LCP suits my needs. I’m in my mid 70s, walk w/a cane & no longer go after bad guys.

For me, the revolver trigger is one of the big things a new shooter needs to overcome. Especially people who are not ready for the bang that comes after it. They'll throw their shots unless it's point blank range. Sure, they need to be able to learn how to treat malfunctions in an autoloader but a revolver's learning curve is a bit steeper especially when it comes to reloading BUT if you want to be THAT guy and say the average gun fight is 1 to 3 rounds, I don't live on the likelihood of things happening, especially when it comes to my life. The odds of getting rear ended is actually not that common and I went through 20 years of driving before I ever got into an accident of any kind BUT it did happen.

You either haven't been doing this very long or lack experience if you don't appreciate, own, reload/cast bullets for and shoot both. Too many 20 and 30-something self proclaimed experts these days. I was doing this long before you even thought about it kids! Before they were even born to be more exact.
You can reload 148 grain lead DEWC or HBWC in a .38 special for about the same price as a .22 LR. They do this while paying $50 bucks a box for factory 9mm because they don't reload and don't own any revolvers. Also the power can't be matched when you step up to the Magnums. It's ok....9mm is the KING of all calibers and can do everything equal or better. Better keep that nonsense to yourself and don't tell the Indiana DNR that. They are smarter than the FBI and don't tell lies.

I shoot both, and quite trained, but I agree with Steve. I too would advise a new shooter towards a revolver. Then look at their hands and hand strength as to a hammer less double action only or a traditional revolver. Some double action pulls can be heavy, harder for smaller hands. Great video, keep them coming!!

I disagree with your comparison of semi autos and manual transmission. Personally, I would compare the revolver with the m/t, since it is more complicated. You see, before firing a revolver, you cock the hammer. The reloading process is also much more complicated. You measure the gunpowder, pour it, repeat 6 times, then you place the balls and use the ram rod and push it down, then you place the percussion caps on the back, then you are ready.

I am not a gun person.
I came here trying to figure out what is a semi automatic weapon.
So far, it seems to me that a semi automatic weapon if one where you pull the trigger a second time to shoot a second bullet.
With an automatic weapon, you just hold down the trigger, and the shooting repeats.
So far, I consider a revolver as an example of a semi automatic weapon.
Other than that, there are bolt action weapons such as sniper rifles where you have to do something else to load a second round into the firing chamber.

Good points. I would add this. Revolvers are more than just being a simple weapon. They are a safer gun to pull in public in a stressful situation. They are more reliable. Revolver cartridges are also better ballistically, for the most part. If you need 15-17 rounds in a self defense situation, you are in real trouble and need to get out of there. I carry a 6 shot 357 magnum with 2 speedloaders. 18 shots better be enough. LOL

It takes far more training to become proficient with a revolver, the revolver is the stick-shift.
Never met a novice/inexperienced shooter than did better with a revolver than an auto-loader. Revolver: Long-heavy, double-action trigger, extra steps required to reload, extra nuances of reloading (methods, speed-strips, speed loaders, moon-clips, 2x2x2 pouches, etc).
From my experience, every novice shooter I've taken to the range does best with A) A rifle, especially AR-15, or B) Striker-fired 9mm autoloader like a Glock 19/17 (or SIG, M&P, etc), the least 'effective' choice for many new-shooters are revolvers or even pump-action shotguns for that matter (hello short-shuck and surprised look on the face when recoil is felt).
I've seen many new shooters get handed a revolver, start squeezing the trigger, then they *STOP, and let off the trigger* and proceed to stare at the gun like it's broken because the extremely heavy and long pull takes them by surprise. Never mind teach them to reload quickly. Hand them a Glock 19, *bang, bang, bang, bang, slide locks to rear* "push that button, put this in, pull that slide back and let go" *bang, bang, bang* etc...
I love my S&W 686s and My Glocks, but honestly, to become effective, it takes about 3-5x as much practice with a revolver than a Glock... Of course, this internet myth will never die, so I'm certain revolvers will continue to be purchased for non-shooter/wont-practice-ever types that want something stuffed in a sock-drawer. So God forbid the day comes and the need it, they can proceed to fire 5-6 warning shots low & left in the general direction of their attacker(s)...

Revolvers can be more reliable than semiautomatics due to the springs being relaxed in a Revolver in ready condition and a semiautomatic has compressed springs, the recoil and striker or hammer spring, magazine springs, when in condition one, I have both and am proficient with them, there are pros and cons for each, such as capacity and ability to put more rounds on target faster, I don't believe anyone can say what kind of handgun you need, if it fits comfortably in the hand and has good point ability and you can hit your target then you are on the right track, most gun shops will let you try different guns to suit your needs. Hope this helps. 🇺🇸

    • @JohnDoeEagle1

Generally true 1911 .45 ACP and revolver guys are far better marksman than those who only go for high capacity semi-auto handguns. The more rounds you carry the more misses you are allowed. When you have 5 - 8 rounds you tend to make them count.

    • @JohnDoeEagle1
      @JohnDoeEagle1 3 роки тому

But then you put that high capacity semi-auto into the same hands and they are equally good with it. It's about technique...sight picture, breathing control, trigger press and recoil management. That is where the HITS come from.

    • @exothermal.sprocket

Properly cleaning and maintaining both, the bottom-feeder is a more particular platform when it comes to ammunition. Also it requires quality magazines.
Revolvers have the benefit of more than one chamber and the ability to consume dozens of bullet types as well as fire multiple cartridges within the same caliber.

I have a set of Elk stag grips on it as well. Try that with your polymer 9mm flavor of the week. Be clear when I bash "polymer 9mm flavor of the week" I'm not talking about GLOCK or HK. If a customer arrives at a gun shop, and the customer does not know what gun to buy,
then the customer needs to go back home!!
You don't buy anything else that way. So, you should not be buying your guns that way.
The clerk behind the counter will never be a useful source of information.
Anyone who has purchased enough guns already knows that the meat puppet selling the
gun has no idea what the hell they are talking about. Therefore, you better do your research.
You can only discover your personal preference for firearms thru trial and error.
There is no "expert" that can tell you from the start what you should and should not
be interested in. That is the unavoidable process of becoming a gun enthusiast.
That process will require money, time, curiosity, and patience.
Ultimately, you need to become an expert about yourself. Only you can do that.

I have a neighbor who has arthritis and she can't easily pull back the slide or slide the safety off, she can however with a Taurus 605 and 357mag ammo blow the dead center of a target out at 5,10and 20 yards. She is way better then me or my friends with her revolver and I have to either get my custom Sig 226 or my ruger mkII out in order to match her and I can shoot some tight groups.

If I carried a gun expecting a problem, like a cop, security guard, etc., I'd definitely carry a semiautomatic. But there are downsides for civilian EDC. Even police departments have frequent accidental discharges, I'm told bathrooms are common places where those occur. Chances of that happening with a revolver are significantly less and for a gun that will be carried a lot and almost certainly never used in defense, that's a big plus. Civilian defense encounters have been proven consistently to very rarely involve more than 3 rounds fired by the defender, typically at less than 3 yards, with a duration of around 3 seconds. In that scenario a revolver is superior. You can't limp wrist a revolver, you can press is against a bad guy without it jamming and in general they point more naturally for shooting without a good sight picture. Final issue is post shooting, when the police and attorneys get involved. A revolver demonstrates a defensive mindset and doesn't telegraph a person looking for trouble.

Most LEOs don't practice except annual qualifications. They generally aren't that good and very often miss. They need that 15+ high cap 9mm or .40 S&W because they suck. it has nothing at all to do with danger or skill. One round of a .45 ACP or .357 Magnum is more than plenty to drop somebody at least 85% of the time. The same can't be said for 9mm. When you step up to a .40 S&W, 357 SIG, 10mm or .38 Super those chances greatly increase.

@@JohnDoeEagle1 Cops have qualified immunity for the results of mag dumping in the general direction of a "threat", after the fact they have the multi million dollar resources of the police union to mount criminal defense if the blue line allows that to occur. We have nothing, anyone can sue us for anything, including the person shot and his or her family. Then there's the crap shoot of the attitude and perspective of the cop and prosecutor on any given day. Upholstering a firearm is dangerous and the consequences can be life altering.

Yep...don't be emptying your entire magazine into a crowded public place. You better drop the guy in a few rounds or else you will have some explaining to do. All those strays have to go somewhere and I don't think neighboring stores/businesses/houses or nearby parked cars is the ideal place for them.
