reasons my wife carries a revolver, 1. it’s strictly a “get off me” gun. She is not taking a long shot. 2. When you push it into someone’s body it does not come out of battery like a semi auto.

I think new shooters should try as many different firearms as possible try different calibers. Remember you can always go with family friends or even rent some at a range. There's no rush until you find the right one for you or when you're comfortable in buying one.

    * The revolver trigger is not hard to pull. It's just a little heavier than a semi auto. If you have never shot a gun, you don't know the difference. It only seems "long and heavy" if you are used to a semi auto. It isn't hard to pull.
    * Revolvers tend to be metal so they are heavier than a semi auto, so they absorb more recoil.
    * Revolvers are much simpler to operate and to maintain. Point and click. Less to do and remember.
    * Most civilian shootings are resolved in 2-4 rounds fired (If rounds are fired at all), so the capacity difference is more a psychological comfort than something you actually need.
    * Revolvers can fire when pressed up against a target or when still in a pocket, unlike a semi auto.
    * Revolvers tend to be more accurate because the barrel is fixed, unlike a semi auto.
    * Revolvers are less likely to jam or have a problem firing.
    * The spent brass stays in the gun.
    * Revolvers are, and will always be, cooler than semi autos.

Great video! Around me the gun shops used to always recommend women buy a 38spl revolver. Wife and I took our friends, relatives and neighbors shooting and they preferred Semi-auto better except one older woman who took a 357mag revolver, shooting 357mags and obliterated the center out of a target at 21 feet. Over half of the rest had problems with pulling the slides back on even 9mm semi's but with practice improved on that. Also got a local shop to hold a special class for a great price and We ended up with 10 out of 13 woman and 2 out of 2 guys getting their carry permit. The one older lady outshot everyone else and her daughter was 2nd. Neither had shot a handgun more than twice before that!!

With some cars, including Porsches. an automatic transmission is more proficient than a manual. It changes gears faster than any driver is able to.

As a none gun owner from the UK, I would have thought a revolver would be better for a first time gun owner because of the reliability and less maintenance required, Unless you are willing to take the time to learn how to strip and clean your firearm correctly semi auto is the way to go

You would be correct to think that.

The worst trigger I have on a pistol is the first one I ever bought. I am ashamed to say it is a KelTec P11 9mm the trigger on that thing is so nasty your almost better off throwing it at someone and watching them try to pull it. I still own it and refuse to sell it cause I would not wish that gun on my worst enemy lol.

I will always go semi auto over a revolver for both new and experienced shooters. Semi autos are superior in every way from capacity to recoil to trigger quality. It's also very easy for a new shooter to fail with a revolver simply by short stroking the trigger and causing the cylinder to lock up. Semi autos do jam of course but it's a lot harder to short stroke them and cause a user induced malfunction.

Neither is superior to the other in every way. If anything the revolver even to a completely new novice, is only slightly superior due to simplicity and ease of use but both are just as effective as the other when mastered. The two are yin and yang, each filling each others weaknesses. If we take two folks who never shot a gun in there life, pick up either and had to load each one and fire like normal, the revolver would both be more accurate, quicker to load, and quicker to learn even with the heavier trigger pull, it teaches you how to keep your sights still all the way through the trigger pull no mater it’s action. Like the two boys mentioned in the video, the auto-loader needs to be learned how to use. You gotta know where the safety and magazine release are and you have to practice clearing jams and what not. Yes modern day auto-loaders are just as reliable as revolvers. But the the fact is there are just less possible malfunctions that can happen with a revolver mainly because of its simplicity in the mechanism of the firearm, it is in technicality more reliably. This doesn’t mean auto-loaders are unreliable in the slightest but fact of the matter is revolvers take the cake for reliability. It depends on the body shape of folk, many people have different body shapes some small some large, so it all depends but for a lot of folk the revolver can be carried more comfortable as it most of the time conforms to the body better. As I said though neither can take a point here as it’s all actual preference based on the person. And the capacity part that folk always talk about is a myth. Unless your going into war or a very high crime/dangerous area (which using common sense you shouldn’t purposely insert yourself into anyway) where you know you need capacity more than anything, all you need is 0-5 shots to stop your attacker no matter the caliber (9mm-.45 ACP and most anything in between) yes .357 magnum is more powerful in both real life testing and on paper but 95% of readily available handgun caliber rounds will most likely stop an attacker within 3 shots max 90% of the time. “But what it I need more?” Well in that situation your in deep shit and your prolly ain’t gonna get out with your life using either platform. I prefer revolvers as like I said capacity isn’t really an issue and I just like the feeling of not having to rely on fine motor skills under stress that might be needed with auto-loaders. Like I said both are yin and yang. A saying I’ve herd recently is “I want an auto-loader to get into trouble, but what a revolver to get out” (signaling there differences) But at the end of the day you should carry what your comfortable with and have trained with. We aren’t novice shooters carrying for the first time. So with training both are still viable defense platforms. Saying one is superior to the other is dumb as it depends on preference based on situation.

Yes auto-loaders hold more rounds, and last time I checked no one ever in history has complained “I have to much ammo” so auto loafers to take a point in capacity. I have already talked about stopping power in the other comment and because of that neither get a point here either as shot placement is more important. And short stroking the heavy double-action trigger pull is one of the few if not the only shoot induced malfunction possible on a revolver. The auto-loader has many more shooter induced malfunctions that can happen between limp wristing with and improper grip or not fully inserting the magazine ect. The auto-loader is easier to shoot and get follow up shots with (this is based on trigger action though as there are auto-loaders that use double action trigger mechanisms), but you need very proficient training and practice to accurately hit said follow up shots, the same can be said about a revolver rendering fire rate kind of useless as well. As mentioned in the comment above it’s all about situation, I would if I obviously had the choice NEVER take a revolver as a main handgun into a war or a situation that requires prolonged suppressive fire and capacity. One could argue that revolvers are less reliable in adverse weather and environment conditions and abuse. Which is true but in order to ensure reliability in any firearm it needs to be maintained and properly cared for. If anything like mentioned above the revolver is technically superior but not by much as it all comes down to training and be armed to begin with. Any gun is better than no gun 🤷‍♂️

"Revolver is simpler." May be true in what you need to do to operate it. Not true in most cases in terms of mechanical design. A revolver has to be "timed" to precisely line up cylinder with the barrel 6 (or 7, 8, 9, or 10) times. There is one "lock up" to fit with a semi-auto. Ejoyed the video & as far use, no big issues with the video. Obviously you can overcome the heavy trigger, short sight radius by starting with a larger revlover.

Revolvers vs semi-auto is a long debated topic. Even so a SA/DA or D/A only semi auto is best for new shooters if they don't go with a revolver. New shooters shouldn't be buying polymer striker fired pistols for their first gun. They are indeed a bit more dangerous and require more training, skill and situational awareness being safe. Now I know some guy is going to chime in that appendix carries his Sig P-365 with no problems. It's always risky carrying that pistol that way or any other striker fired pistol. He's been more lucky than skilled that nothing has happened yet.
