    It's a shame this was only released on Netflix in the UK. I would've paid good money to see this masterpiece on the big screen.

    11/10 movie. When I went to see it, the entire theater was empty except for one guy who was quietly on his phone in the back. the immersion of the movie when you really pay attention to it is so great that I left the theater discomforted and confused, because I had been exposed to such detailed fictional reality.

    I'm a big fan of Stanislaw Lem's novels Solaris and The Invincible, and I think Annihilation brilliantly reflected the views in those books as well. The utter futility of trying to understand the alien, and how we are limited to human thinking patterns when trying to grasp it. For me, Annihilation is probably my favorite SciFi film, ever.

    I liked the film, though my other family members fell asleep. It's not for everyone, which is a shame since we should probably challenge ourselves and our identities more. The prevailing theme I got from the movie was the Annihilation of identity.
    The team seems to be resigned to entering the shimmer, as though its inevitable. Supposedly they are volunteers, but there are so many caveats and restrictions on their free will, in the form of their obligations to the government, their careers, and the survival of the species. The Shimmer is a good foil for science, as it highlights the reach of science in deconstructing humans and our minds.

    Arrival, Annihilation, and Mother completely blew me away. It kind of sucks that my tastes are so different from the main stream. These movies are doing poorly and will probably dissuade directors from taking more risks. Instead of more original movies, we'll just get 20 more Super Hero movies. Bah.

      Verdant Hyborian, couldn’t agree more, I loved those movies too. It’s depressing when you see really great art that you connect with and then nobody else gives a shit. I thought Blade Runner 2049 was incredible too.

      Lakerdas Pastos, I'm really sad that the movies I like aren't widely liked. But I totally understand people not liking them or even thinking that they are bad. You can't do something unique or original with out alienating a few people. But the fun part is talking about the difference of opinions.

    • @copypastemyname
      @copypastemyname 6 років тому

      Well i guess i am really picky with my movies. Cerebral sci-fi like Star Trek, Blade Runner, Arrival, Odyssey 2001 etc tickles my fancy. Generally i tend to dislike it when symbolism gets a tad bit too over the top, comes out to me as a tad bit pretentious.

    • @verdanthyborian2322
      @verdanthyborian2322 6 років тому

      Lakerdas Pastos, I can see that. However, when talking about Mother!, I find that people I've talked too don't get the movie at all. You really need to know the stories from the Bible and other religious works in order to get what's going on in that movie. From my experience, people don't get Mother! at all because they are completely unaware of the stories the movie is symbolizing. So you either know the source material and the movie seems extremely blatant. Or you are unfamiliar and have absolutely no idea what the movie is trying to present. It's kind of a hole it's dug itself into, I guess it could have been done better, but it is what it is.
      As for most mentally stimulating sci-fi movies, people just don't give it a chance or stop to think about it. People are in that instant satisfaction mode. I watched Ex Machina and hated it for the first day. But I thought about it for a couple of days then grew to love it. So I can see some one watching a movie, not liking it, then giving up on actually mulling it over for deeper thoughts and hidden meanings. Some people just want to move on. I do feel like there are too many people like that though.
      Hey, if you haven't seen it, check out "Coherence." The director spent like 50k on it and filmed the whole movie in his own kitchen. It's very indie feeling but give it time to kick off. It's a really fun watch and impressive with what he was able to do with such a low budget.

    I have a very polarized view of 'Annihilation' the film. On one hand, it's a gorgeous, mind-bending, slow-burning, thought-provoking work of art. On the other, it utterly, deeply betrays its source material. Not trying to trash-talk the film, because it is very good, but the more I think about the more true it feels. It strips away the Thoreauvian, ecological themes central to the book (which I find underused in a serious manner in cinema), all of the story except for the scenes where the Biologist's husband arrives home and the team enters Area X, heavily borrows elements from H. P. Lovecraft's 'The Colour Out of Space' while rejecting all of the breathtakingly unique imagery and creations of the novels (like the Tower and Crawler, which were not minor details at all but what the whole thing revolved around), totally changes the characters in terms of both appearance and personality (except for the psychologist), removes the profound environmental debates and analyses that added so much depth to the original, ignores the fact that the novels are not three separate stories but one long story, and all in all removes any trace of Jeff VanderMeer's essence. My appreciation for the film grows the more I watch it, but so does the feeling that I would rather have seen someone like Terrence Malick or Darren Aronofsky or Robert Eggers who are skilled with surrealism but can give the natural world the depth and centrality it deserves.

    • @tomnorton4277
      @tomnorton4277 4 роки тому

      Alex Garland has admitted that although he read the novel, he decided to write the script from his memory of it instead of adapting it directly from the pages of the book. One might see this as lazy but I don't think he did it because he couldn't be bothered to reread it. I think he did it because it allowed him to put his own spin on the movie without having to worry too much about the novel. It's kind of like how Stanley Kubrick handled The Shining. He read the source material and contacted Stephen King but in order to make the movie his own, he dismissed King's script and wrote his own with help from another novelist.

    Annihilation is an overelaborate idea for me. I liked it but not to that degree. It's nice to see your breakdown as you go much deeper and you explain foreshadowing like no other. Thanks for the analysis.

    I love this film a lot, but it has quite a few faults that I find difficult to get over. The framing device kind of removes the tension from the scenes within the shimmer, as we know the ultimate outcome before we even go there. Also, the expeditions into the shimmer were so poorly planned and ill equipped that no military group would ever make so many bad decisions.

    • @caad5258
      @caad5258 6 років тому +1

      I think the team being unprepared for the shimmer added tension to the film. Can you ever be prepared for an environment that infects your body and erodes your mind? though the yaoi guai ambush was frustrating. they should have stayed in the tower...

    • @Level_1_Frog
      @Level_1_Frog 6 років тому +4

      Ca Ad Well sure it adds tension, but like the army dudes didn't even think of obvious stuff that could have helped their survival; setting a base camp right inside the shimmer with regular contact and checkups with the outside camp, wearing tethers when traversing the shimmer to show where they're going, laying markers or paint along the path they're travelling so that future expeditions know where they were going, there's way more they could have done to avoid casualties. But then the film wouldn't have been as atmospheric and cool so I get why they didn't get bogged down in realism, but it's still annoying.

    • @joshrankert811
      @joshrankert811 5 років тому

      Alexander Mcallister I feel like tension, although present, wasn’t their objective. I feel like they were simply trying to show the simmer and showing its beauty and indifference

    Director said that it both makes sense and doesn't when he was talking about 2D image rotating around itself in a 3D environment to create rotating, floating thing. This reminded me that infinite amount of thing in a finite sized volume is impossible and possible. Best example to this would be our limited brains can have infinitely large imaginations which can be against our strongest beliefs. And our heart which is around the size of our fist can store infinite love for many things. Those are many infinite things.
    It doesn't make sense and it does.
    There were some parts (mostly near end of the video) I didn't understand. I will assume that you explained it well. Way too well for me to understand.

  • @copypastemyname
    @copypastemyname 6 років тому +3

    I don't understand the praise for that movie to be honest. I didn't hate it... but ultimately it seemed like an art project with a lot of neat visual ideas that got mashed up in a movie that had nothing to say. It felt like they gathered up and thought about neat species crossovers like a croc with shark teeth or deer with branch antlers, trees made of glass (?even though sand is not a living thing?), plat people etc.
    The horror did not work for me at all (it actually seemed amusing to me, thus totally out of place), the character decisions did not make any sense, the epiphany of Tessa Thompson's character about the shimmer's caledoscope behavior came out of nowhere and seemed like a cheap exposition device. Not to mention that only Natalie's character was the only one that made sense to be armed, and not all the rest that had no military experience.
    That said the choreographed sequence was artistically amazing, as was the idea of the fractal animation but its not enough for me to save the movie. Not to mention that the very last scene felt like a cheap cliffhanger.
    I wanted to like this movie so much but in the end it felt as an attempt into sci-fi that pretended to be a lot more cerebral than it actually was.
    (note that i watched the movie on 4k which actually might have been to the movie's detriment because a lot of the visual effects seem a lot more fake in that resolution)

    Annihilation is the best cinema has to offer after atmospheric sci-fi genre films like Stalker, Under the Skin and even the Endless. Unlike big budget 2049 which was a fucking turd shit fucking pile of trash money grab. Even 10 cloverfiled lane had more to offer.

    I'm disappointed you didn't talk about the representation of women; how they all have stereotypically "male" roles-- breaking the conventional representation of women in society/films. they're also breaking the conventional stereotype of 'damsel in distress' as the females are saving the group of men with guns-- something that tags along with this is how all the men in the first group are suggested to have no background regarding biology ect, however, all women have some sort of interesting background regarding science.
    I also think that the shimmer doesn't just represent a barrier of admiration and sadness, but also represents symbolically a barrier between us and the unknown; creating a divide between what we want to see, and what we as humanity is ignoring-- the destruction of the world by mans hand. This supported the unique shimmer sounds that create a barrier between the characters and the unknown are super triggering to the mind as it strikes no familiarity-- kinda creating the idea that humanity is ignorant of our actions.

    I was extremely dissapointed with this movie, with Ex Machina being one of my favourite movies of the last 10 years. I think the concept was interesting (I'll probably check the books out), visuals stunning, and the sound design great.
    BUT the dialogue was utterly horrible (which is bizarre since that was a strong point in EM), directing sloppy and it had ENORMOUS plot holes.
    I'm glad other people liked it though and I still am an Alex Garland fan. 4/10

      Neither the filmmakers nor the actresses, not even Natalie Portman or Tessa Thompson who are both notoriously woke, preached about the fact that all the leads were female. This movie isn't one of those feminazi propaganda films, it's just a film that happens to star five females and it works because every single one of those females is a flawed human being, not a feminazi wet dream.
