I can only admire this man, that come so far in one month, even if he's dropped the game. For the last 3 days I played DNF Duel and played about 150 matches and won about 10, maybe 15 at best. Even with simple mechanics, I just can't use my brain and hands to do right things. Even spending time in tutorials in a real match I'm starting to panic and just mash all the buttons. Yeah, in 150 games I managed to remember something and even could do some combos. They were dumb, but I did them. But one misstep and here I am again, being wiped on the whole floor. Yeah, I did some damage, but on the end I just lose and lose again and again. These 3 days were agonizingly depressing. And this man in a week learned so much. Yeah, he's being coached but still. Hope one day I can learn to play even as half good as he is.

I can definitely understand how demotivating it feels to fail the celestial challenge. The grind from floors 4 - 10 was a pretty steady easy climb from my experience but the grind from floor 10 to celestial felt like climbing a mountain. It took me 3 long months of bouncing between floors 8 -10 before I finally broke through to celestial. I can totally understand why some people wouldn't have the patience to go through that. As much as I love this game the ranking system can be very tilting and demoralizing.

Thank you for featuring me in the video at the end Akaraien! I'm happy I was able to contribute in a small way. I learned a lot from your coaching and just by watching your games on UA-cam. It gave me fresh perspective on not just Gio but also on fighting games as a whole genre. Coaching isn't just about technical knowledge. Sometimes, it's also about motivation and morale-boosting. It reminds you that this is supposed to be fun. It's supposed to be enjoyed with others. That's what I love about coaching. I've always felt I've needed a coach to help me get over this mental block I always hit when I play fighting games. I've been playing them since SFII in the 90s and I've always been a very scrubby low skill player and never figured out how to get past that. There are so many concepts I try and read about, or watch videos but I just don't always learn very well that way. I don't know a single other person in real life that plays fighting games and I don't really learn much from getting beat online by a stranger who I can't even interact with. I can watch all the videos about RC and combo paths on all of youtube but I just never really do it right myself. I don't get any help or feedback from playing CPU, spending any time in training mode, or losing to strangers online so I never feel like I improve, I always feel like I practice wrong and it usually ends up feeling like I dont even have the ability to get better. I know I need to keep trying and just play more, playing more and more is the best thing to do but I get discouraged easily and have no one I know IRL or online to play with or motivate me to stick with it.

Seeing him quit made me sad. He was so close to his goal but let angry and frustrated get to him. I could only think of one speech to help him push forward "Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it.
You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!
Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!" - Rocky.

I've just stuck to gio to try to grasp and understand fighting games. But I'm in this constant back and forth with floors 9-10 it's just an endless battle with no clear path. The dramatic skill difference is discouraging, like I'm throwing myself at a brick wall with no sense of progression. Despite attempting to watch and read many videos and guides I just can't seem to grasp it. But I love that you're doing this to help players who are struggling. Sharing my perspective here because the ending really hits home, I’m a current top 100 Potemkin (on pc) and strive was also MY first fighting game. I’ve watched them for years but this was the first to make me take a plunge.
The celestial challenge is frankly demoralizing. It took me over 40 attempts during the course of a month and a half of grinding. Of those. Maybe 2 or 3 made it to 4 games, most of them were washes. Probably the halfway point of this grind i was at the point where I was rarely losing on floor 10 anymore. The gap between floor 10 and celestial is immense, and while I was steadily getting better, there was no point I felt I was having a breakthrough. I just eventually got good enough that I passed, feeling frustrated, demoralized, and dejected the whole way.
But the ending to this story is if you’re dreading having to do it again, you learn SO fast once you’re up there. The next month I had it within a week of casual play, and every month after has been easily getting it on day 1.
Honestly that’s the real issue with the celestial challenge as is. It gives you no time to learn. Imo if you’ve never been celestial, it should let you play out all 6 games win or lose. I think I woulda gotten it in half the time if I’d just been allowed more games up there.
Tldr if you’re like the protagonist of this video and frustrated with the celestial challenge, I’m validating that it’s frustrating, the system design makes it hard to improve till you manage it over the hill, and once you’re up there the game will feel amazing again.

After I thought about it some, I agree that anyone CAN learn to play fighting games, but not everyone wants to.
My example is myself. I invested 60+ hours into my first traditional fighter, SFV, before I gave up. I spent 90% of that in training mode learning, but nothing really seemed to click. I didn't beat any other players and felt like i wasted my time. I more recently tried out Strive and I spent maybe 10 hours before I realized, I don't like the "journey" of fighting games. And that is the majority of fighting games. I get easily frustrated and demotivated, and those traits are antisynergistic with learning fighting games. I do not have the ironclad mental to lose repeatedly and keep getting back up.

My Platfighting coach has been teaching me the fundamentals. I can get to floor 9 by shear force of dash cancel farslash whiff punishing(I play Gio cause imma Furry), but then I get overwhelmed and forget my options and start getting out buttoned. I have a lot of difficulty with Gios super inputs right now. And I lack matchup knowledge so I literally don't know what to against most characters and am just praying that this or that is the part of this characters corner pressure where I get to reverse from. I also don't trust my own judgement and back out of my own risky options even if my opponent has done nothing but prove to me that they're gunna shield on wakeup so I should just grab them and then I panic and crouch slash again.

This video is really motivating, even if that happened in the end, but it happens, it can be difficult, even if you are not accustomed to this type of game and there is no one guiding or helping you, even more so if you choose more characters technical or difficult like Zato-1 and Happy Chaos, I've been trying and training for about the last week, because as I've always had problems with Main normally, now that he's releasing tomorrow, I'm about to go back on fire, and go up with him and one day go to EVO, after it was announced, my life changed in certain aspects among other things, which complicates and that normally I have to play against people from farther parts, and as I live in two houses currently Houses, the MS it usually goes above 200MS and Rollback sometimes reaches 7 in the house wifh bad internet, but after a few months, I'll be able to play better for longer, I even tried asking for help, but in general it didn't work, maybe I got a little lost for some reasons and for the comment I will stop here, but that's it,

I feel that man's pain and I hope he eventually comes back and tries again. For him to make so much progress in only a months time, He basically is at his peak level a celestial player. I've been playing fighting games since I was a kid, and I've made it to celestial and dropped down like 4 times now. It sucks, but it happens, but if you want to meet that goal you just have to keep on fighting. Its a part of the journey. For the people who just picked this up as their first Traditional Fighter. WELCOME TO THE FGC! Get ready to get owned. Its necessary to get gud

My character of choice was Potemkin. It took me, a "never played fighting games" person to get celestial challenge 2 weeks. I failed. Next week I hit cel challenge 2 times. Failed. BUT
Week after I was hitting celestial challenge daily. Sometimes 2 times a day. In the end it took me around 36 days to get my place in havens.
Currently trying out Ramlethal. Sometimes 3/0 10 floor ppl but sometimes get 3/0ed as well. When the time will come I wanna get my celestial spot as Ram as well
Pretty proud of myself. I didn't have pro player as my mentor. I remember hitting floor 10 before I realized how to do RRC

I've only gotten into Guilty Gear (and traditional fighters) recently with Strive, and I've been enjoying it! My biggest issue when it comes to fighting games isn't the games, but the FGC itself. The FCG has some of the most elitist and toxic people I've seen in a while. I know a good amount of the FGC is really nice, but these people have been there long enough for it to be a problem. I know a lot of people would say to just ignore it, but that's not easy for me. I'm a very emotional and passionate person so these things get into my head after a while. You can only really hear that you suck for playing a certain character, or that the game you play sucks because the inputs are "easy" enough times before it becomes too much. I've had times where I've tried to have a genuine conversation about fighting games, until some douchebag ruins the whole conversation. It makes my drive for fighting games constantly fluctuate due to this. It doesn't help that I really don't have stable enough internet to play online, so i'm mostly playing these games by myself or when I can meet up with a friend irl. I still wanna try and play these games more, but damn is it hard sometimes.

Getting to the celestial challenge in 1 month from brand new is pretty good. It took me 300 hours of gameplay just to reach floor 10. Even then, I'm 350+ hours in now and I still only manage to beat other 10s maybe 20-30% of the time and some even beat me dozens of times in a row. I've played fighters since the genre started, and Strive for quite a while (though my main's lv is just 64).
But the highest I've gone is 10th fl. Currently on 8th. I got gold rank in SFV, but it took over 5 years.
Never tried paid coaching, though I post in Discords a lot, do replay review, warmup in Park, etc.

You didn't put much effort in then. Even people who play casually eventually learn the game through playing anyway. So ye. Anyone can learn a fighting game. Because the basics are just basics like anything else. Same way everyone can learn to ride a bike. Obviously it takes longer for some than others, but you won't get anywhere if you let yourself go.

    • @kuro9900

Im back here to say that i couldn't. I just have given up on fighting games. Playing for 2 months and no improvement at all, and when i asked for directions i was told to just "play the game" over and over again, in the end, i just getting worse each day, and my time in practice mode was just a waste of time.
Maybe it needs some sort of skill or talent to play fighting games, if the only way to learn the "fundamentals" of the genre are to just bash your head in the wall in hopes that you will learn something someday then... Doesn't seem like a good plan or even a fun one.
I don't need a game to feel depressed.

    • @Trashiemoviestar
      @Trashiemoviestar 2 роки тому

@@kuro9900 anyone can learn fighting games. That is objectively true. Your problem was that your practice wasn't efficient and you got shitty advice. You don't need any talent to be decent at em. You can play casually and learn the game that way. Or if you grind you can also learn the game. Having a talent for video games just sounds weird anyway imo

    • @captainscuba3651

I keep myself improving when I'm in training mode by treating the the combos I learn like I'm in practical situations and realistic scenarios. I learn combos and do them from both sides, can i sweep RC it, during a dash, as fast as possible, reaction based. I try things in fights with other people I'm not comfortable with instead of doing the old reliable gameplans. Basically trying to understand my character and not just a single dimension of them. It helps alot and teaches you to keep a cooler head, At least for me. You'll get better if you want to, some of us just take a bit more time. Alot of times if I'm loosing ill stop trying to win and start trying to figure out what works and what doesnt against that character/player. Goodluck and just have fun 🙂

As of late, GGS has started drawing me in with the OST and amazing animation, so I decided to get myself a controller for it. Watching these sorts of journey videos, I realize my hesitation is a fear I can break. No skill, barely any knowledge, and a bad past won't stop me. It's time to face it head on. 💪
