I love this guide. I was discouraged when I looked at other guides where they unplugged everything. Then I found this vid and now my Animal Crossing joycon shells look amazing.
Thank you so much for this guide! I managed to change both joy cons in around two hours. I never would have attempted anything like this without your tutorial and i love my switchs new look.
OMG thank you, I think I spent over an hour with the original method, It took so long that I ended up doing it a separate day, your method took only 10 minutes in comparison for myself
I was going through hell replacing the buttons on my left joycon, it took me 3 ½ hours just to finish the left one but when it came to the right joycon it took me only around 40 minutes. This was a very helpful tutorial and is probably the only reason I don't have two disassembled joycons without understanding how to properly put them but togetherm
@@lilybebaplay yes. I now have a splatoon 3 switch that has a green joycon with metallic purple buttons and a purple joycon with metallic green buttons
This is very helpful, took me around 2.5 or maybe 3 hours total to do (one of my joysticks died and thankfully we had a repair kit for it). Easy to follow instructions, very detailed in showing how to break down and put together with the steps. Thank you and I will use this video again for future reference. 🤙🏻
The video may be a few minutes long, but in reality it definitely took us an extensive amount of time too. I think we actually had to take a break between the left and right joy-con, because of how much concentration it took!!
This tutorial is seriously the best one I’ve seen. This was so much less intimidating and I was able to change out the buttons on my OLED joycons to the colorful ones with pretty much zero issues. Thank you so much!!!
Just did mine in the green/purple chameleon! Tutorial was great! I did find removing the ribbon for the right bumper made it easier for clearance reasons (and because forcing the bumper down already made me nervous enough) I ended up just using the tweezers to help me place the ribbon cable back. (Not going to mention the part where I pulled the ribbon cable off accidentally and started panicking for a bit lol)
Congratulations! Yes it can definitely be scary to pull the ribbon out. There is nothing wrong with removing it as long as you put it back after! We just tried to keep the steps simpler and more streamlined :)
Thank you SO much. I found your video from a comment on reddit and your guide was very easy to follow and it took me about 2-3 hours to finish (mainly had issues with the springs flying and screws AND buttons falling on my floor). I have experience working with many pc parts so this wasn't hard but for anyone who is still nervous/scared about going into this, just be gentle and follow each step carefully. However, the one annoying part is the SPRINGS!! Those flew everywhere and I ended up losing one but luckily the company I bought the new shells from had extra springs. One tip is you can actually just hold down the springs or if they're bent ( at 10:31), I used a tweezer and put it back in place straight again. Also, it HELPS a lot if you have a small magnetic tray to keep all the screws together/organized, one breath or crazy movement will have the screws/springs flying lmao. I got my tray from amazon for 5 dollars
I would highly recommend disconnecting the battery from the joycons as soon as you open it 😬 just to prevent any short circuit caused by the screwdriver 🪛 nice tutorial!
You are a legend. Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial it honestly made everything so easy. I had the Standard Switch version with the neon red and blue joycons and finally got the white eXtremeRate ones from Amazon and this tutorial has made it so easy to do. It did take me just over 3 hours, but it was nice taking my time with this as I got the Switch as a gift from my girl. Also, if you do get a rounded out screw on the outside (one of mine just came stuck for some reason, the rest were perfectly fine) and you plan on not needing the stock housing, just ply away at the nearest entry point on the plastic towards the area the screw sits in, only took me 5 minutes to chisel my way in and worked like a charm.
My joycon gameboy shell is arriving this weekend I already removed everything from both joycons without removing the cables it was east thanks to this tutorial thank you I can’t wait to get my gameboy shells
to update this, I had an ACNH switch lmao and I got so frustrated after stripping the dang screws that I just snapped off the back of the joycon, pulled out two ribbon cables in the process and spent all night thinking id completely ruined it, but this morning reattached the cables and put it all back together and it works 😭😭 im too scared to try the right side now I'm traumatized
I’m scared to do this because I feel like I’ll mess up, but im pretty sure I won’t if I watch carefully ✌ Also I haven’t bought shells yet so it will be some time before I’m able to shell swap and use this tutorial. But it’s super good I love it ❤
Took me 2 days, I lost track of time but at least 4 hours @_@. My only advice is patience, maintain good posture, use tweezers and for the ZR's put the button on first then manually squeeze in the springs later, much easier that way imo Thank you :)
The best tutorial I ever watched and I modded a couple of pairs following your video!!! Will you ladies make a tutorial for the Pro Controller customization cause there is no even a clear and easy video about the Pro Controller modding, so I am really looking forward to this 🥰🥰🥰
I'm just waiting for the rest of my tools to arrive so I can customize them already and this tutorial makes it seem so simple, I'm almost confident I won't mess up lmfao. I'll watch this again for when I'll finally change my shells and buttons!
So I’m trying to use the screwdriver provided with the kit but both of the bits aren’t working I can’t remove the 4 screws on the Joycon. Are they maybe really tight in or something because I tried it on my third party Joycon and it worked just fine
2:00 I don’t have that tool to remove the rumble part. What do you suggest I do from here? Your vid helped me so much, especially when screwing everything back together and the shoulder buttons! Automatic subscription.
This guide is fantastic and I was able to successfully change one joycon so far! I’m experiencing a lot of issues with stripping on the back Y screws. Would you recommend the eXtreme rate toolkit?
It is 1am and i am crying over getting the ZL button lined up right somebody put me out of my misery i hate this so much lmao. Every time i think i have it right, i can't tell if i force-push it into place or what, and it all falls apart on me, and i need to go scrambling for where the springs went. How is everyone here making this sound easy-peasy?!
Seems like a lot of work just for customization. My white ones are boring but I have a purple and orange pair. I do need to replace the joysticks on the white ones because my cat chewed them though.
Thank you this helpt me out a ton it worked for me actually and just know jesus always loves you when ever and ho ever you are amen you yes you mater amen hallelujah
Thank you for the video, I followed the tutorial step by step but now the right joycon doesn’t connect in handheld mode. Any fixes? Congrats for the video
This happened to me, kinda. When I pressed the home button, the right joycon would disconnect from handheld mode. If you didn't break anything by accident, taking it apart and adjusting the rail might fix it. Don't tighten the screw too much and make sure it's aligned. Mine wasn't and that was causing the issue.
I've heard there's an app that can change this, it's called joycon toolkit or something like that. Btw, idk how to use, but theres a lot of tutorials on youtube
While doing this I’m finding out that the way my joycon is designed is quite different from your own (the breath of the wild themed ones). Has anyone else encountered this issue? I’m at the mainframe part and have two screws left and I think that’s the only thing holding it to the top of the shell? Will update
I noticed the battery on your blue joycon was a little bulged did you end up having to replace it in the following months or have you noticed any reduced battery life or anything
so far no issues with the battery. We also noticed the bulge and have been keeping an eye on it since then in case we needed to change it! We may still change it just in case
@@lilybebaplay awesome good to know the batteries are pretty resilient seeing as mine are alway connected and pretty much never removed although I just got a new pair for Christmas they’re the splatoon 3 ones they were $40 from a 3rd party and they are wonderful and so nice looking
How about you not make tutorials. Seriously, always disconnect your battery at minimum. Follow this tutorial and you could easily just brick your joy cons or destroy ribbon cables trying to balance that mess.
If the battery is completely drained, it should be fine. No need to disconnect it. It sure is something they should've mentioned but nothing to get angry about. Also, as long as you know where everything goes, balancing that mess won't be too hard. It looks scary but you'll get used to it quickly. A few days ago I switched out the joystick in one of our joycons. The battery was completely drained and I only disconnected one ribbon cable (not counting the joystick) and another one fell out. It still works perfectly, no need to worry.
i really would like to make my joycons white with these type of covers but it looks so intimidating and i'm already stressing about it even though i haven't even bought the cover 🥲
I love this guide. I was discouraged when I looked at other guides where they unplugged everything. Then I found this vid and now my Animal Crossing joycon shells look amazing.
so happy to hear this!!
Thank you so much for this guide! I managed to change both joy cons in around two hours. I never would have attempted anything like this without your tutorial and i love my switchs new look.
With the ZL I personally found it easier to click the button in before the springs and use a tweezer to put the springs in place after the fact.
OMG thank you, I think I spent over an hour with the original method, It took so long that I ended up doing it a separate day, your method took only 10 minutes in comparison for myself
I gave up at that part and left out the springs and it still works like a charm 😅

is this the same as the oled?
yes, the joycons are all the same on the Standard and the OLED edition. Not the console itself though of course, just the controllers.
I need help please one of the wires popped off how do I put it back on
How do you attach the l r slider back to the new frame?? I’m so confused :(
Theres some silver screws longer than the others, how do i know which one goes where?
you can use the longer ones first and if they can't fully go in, they use the shorter ones instead
