  • Hi my creative friends! Recently I made a 100% cotton watercolor journal for less than $4.00 - and you can too! No sewing required! Watch and see how it's done...

    Thank you for sharing this. Great idea! I bet it was a lot harder using watercolor paper but your idea of using regular paper to show us was probably better in the long run. The cost of handmade sketch books is crazy but I totally understand as to why and they are much better looking, than I can make anyway.Thank you!

      You're welcome Danielle! It's cost effective if you run through a lot of sketchbooks or if you have a local source where you can buy just one sheet of WC paper. 100% cotton paper makes all the difference. As you saw my WC version came out crooked because it IS hard to fold but I'm still using it and it works for me. Glad you enjoyed!

    That was awesome! I’ve seen other people do this but no one explained it as logically and practically as you did :-) I have a huge piece of watercolor paper that I bought a long time ago for a school project and I’ve never known what to do with it, but I do now! Thank you :-)

      You're welcome and you'll probably find you use it more because it's more inexpensive than a journal you get ready made.

    Thanks to Jerry's Painter's Diary, I found your channel to which I am a new subscriber. Your ideas for providing surfaces to make art on inspired me. I have an unfinished project: I took Caron 140# cold press pad apart, folded the 18 x 12 (if I recall the size correctly) in half, and took a cereal box to make its cover. And, off I went to learn bookbinding and acquire tools.
    Sheets are still available for journaling when I want, or for practicing acrylic paint pouring (especially now that canvas is so expensive, and alternatives like MDF and chipboard are not much less expensive.) But I didn't have time or space yet to finish this project (building art studio after moving home).
    I really like your idea of making individual books which would fit my style of working now from pouring to doodles and zentangles. Good luck with your studio project.

      Welcome Darice! The good thing about individual books is that you can make them any size and out of any paper available depending on your preferred medium. You are on the right track with bookbinding. Try to find some way to work on your art until you can get your studio up and keep an eye out for future videos where I'll post updates on my studio progress.

    I would have liked it if you had shown how it opens up especially with the fold that flips up/down. Thank you for the demonstration.

      Too bad I missed that point. I'm sure you aren't the only viewer who wanted to see how it opens and it IS a bit tricky but it really only opens and folds one way, so you wouldn't get too lost when using it or looking back over it later. The nice thing is you eventually do use both sides of each section of paper and that's what makes it so economical.

    Brilliant idea.
    The tool used is called a burnished.
    I'd say wear gloves doing this as oil from your hands will affect how the watercolors act...

    I might be weird but I actually like sewing my own sketchbooks since it's not too hard and making the covers etc.

    • @colorcapacity2779
      @colorcapacity2779  Рік тому

      Actually I saw a lot of videos about sewing your own sketchbook. I see less now that there are more 100% cotton paper books out there now, but they can still be pricey. I also like the option of mixing different papers in a custom book you sew yourself like including hot and cold pressed or including some toned sketch paper along with watercolor paper in the same book but I never got as far as learning to do it. You've got the right idea.

    Where did you get this large pack of watercolour paper?

    • @colorcapacity2779
      @colorcapacity2779  3 роки тому +1

      Jerry's Artarama was having a sale on the paper but most art suppliers will carry that size in at least a few brands. Check out the video I did a few weeks back for the full Jerry's unboxing.

    Interesting--you are only painting one side of the sheet then?

    • @colorcapacity2779
      @colorcapacity2779  Рік тому +1

      Both sides, actually. It kind of folds and bends back on itself until at the end you've covered both sides of the paper. Test it on a piece of copy paper and you'll see what I mean. Thanks for watching and happy painting!

      This is so neat! I am wondering, if you glue a cover on, do you lose the ability to paint on both sides? It would be fun to cover a greeting card box to store this journal in ..??

    • @colorcapacity2779
      @colorcapacity2779  3 місяці тому

      @@paulettepaulsen2336 Sorry.. didn't see your comment as it was tucked under the other one. You can't add a regular cover with a spine as you would not be able to open the sketchbook. With this style, you can only glue a single "page" cover on the front and/or on the back similar to those yuo see on accordian type sketchbooks. They serve to protect the sketchbook a bit but it's not like a conventional cover. Your idea of the greeting card box is more practical and makes me think of a slipcase? Brilliant! Tell me how it comes out!

      Hi Sylvia- This was 2 years ago but I see currently Jerrys Artarama has a deal for 15 sheets for $62.13 which works out to about $4.14 a sheet. No affiliation but I shop from them online and have never had an issue. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
