Most people who suffer 'cancellation' are members of the general public who don't bounce back, because they lose everything, or end up dead or in prison. The famous ones 'bounce back' because they are famous, but even then not all of them do
That Jenner joke was controversial? That’s crazy, bc it’s so benign. Like, he obviously changed to a she. There’s nothing even slightly hurtful or malicious about that joke, just observational humor.
When I'm in my right mind, I can't think of anything I've ever heard that is offensive. When I'm not in my right mind, then I can. So being offended says more about me than anything else. And if that's true for me, it's true for y'all too.
That said, the consequences should be reasonable though, not some of the nonsense that's been going on recently.... Well, recently things seem to have gotten a bit better maybe...But you know? Over the last 8 years or so, many things have gone somewhat bonkers (although you can probably trace the roots back earlier, they just weren't as bad a problem then)... While people are coming back from being cancelled, they were still often put through a lot and didn't know that they'd be fine at the time... If it doesn’t ride the edge of inappropriate, it usually isn’t very funny. It’s not the same as freedom of speech. It’s a reminder to not take yourself so seriously
The original story: Robin Williams was being interviewed in Germany. The interviewer asked him why there weren’t many funny people in Germany. He replied: Did you ever think that maybe you killed off all the funny people?
I agree Munfu. Freedom of speech has nothing to do with the consequences of what you say. We’re all free to pee on electric fences, but we don’t get to choose what happens once we let it go. In case you’re wondering, yes. As a kid I peed on an electric fence. Never did it again.
I've always said about the whole woke backlash of comedians that tell "offensive" jokes - the ones that keep rolling are the ones that don't ever apologize. Bill Burr, Ricky Gervais, Dave Chappelle - none of them ever back down and, in fact, actually fire back. It's just like Ricky said about Kevin Hart - he got fired (or forced to step down) from the Oscars, but meanwhile, Ricky continued to host the Golden Globes while saying way more offensive things than what Kevin said - LIVE AT THE SHOW!
Freedom of speech is the single most important thing in the world. Our very advancement as a species is due to language, being able to communicate and pass on ideas, and to record them. To debate whether something is good or bad because at the end of they day, everything we know, even if we think it is obvious, had to be learned. Silence is the true killer. Imagine a Nazi, KKK member, or any other bad person or group. When they have freedom of speech to spread their hate, that hate is in the open and allows the good people to get their counter argument out in the open. When it is silenced, the message is still spread, but now it is secret, and there is no one around to now counter it because they don't even know people are talking about it.
You don't remember him saying that either - just know that Ricky hosted SEVERAL Golden Globes and you've only covered one of them. That's why you don't remember seeing it.

my thinking is on comedy is this: if you are laughing at some jokes and getting offended by others, then you are the problem. folks say you shouldn't make jokes about trans folks. ok. but what makes them so special that they deserve to be exempt from comedy? if we have to stop making fun of them, what about jokes about black people? or asians? or jews? or mexicans? comedy can bring people together by laughing at our differences. comedy is fair. comedy is equal. either everything is funny or nothing is funny.
