@@Lucky-tt2yq my grandfather was 17 at the start of the war, travelled to Britain from Canada, lied about his age, joined the raf, became an officer, trained as a Lancaster navigator, fought in the deadliest of air battles, bombed factories, homes, cities, churches, government buildings, the lot. Most of it he wasn’t proud of and didn’t speak much of it. After the war, he became an architect and designed many buildings around the world, became a religious man and no doubt prayed for forgiveness every day. Leaving home at 17 took great courage, joining the war took great courage, flying missions with high death tolls took great skill. He was a great man, no ifs ands or buts about it, war is hell and he did his job to free Europe from an axis of evil that destroyed the lives of millions of people. If you rag on the allies for bombing cities, and killing thousands, but want to reduce the spotlight of hate on the Axis powers who killed millions just look at the numbers and decide who was worse, and who should take the blame for all those deaths. Nazi Germany did start the war after all so those civilian deaths are Germany’s fault. Don’t come to me saying that the Germans were misled. The average Wehrmacht might not have been evil, but nonetheless they were all cogs in a giant machine of death that claimed millions. Tell any Holocaust survivor or liberated person that the allies weren’t heroes and see what kind of reception you receive.

One of his treasured possession is a poster made out of a picture of his crew. He never admitted that because my parents didn’t know about it and he didn’t want them to take it down 😂😂. When I was a kid, there were 5 of us siblings, and so my parents went on a cruise one time and we stayed home that summer. A good family friend who us kids didn't know as well watched us, it was an older man and his wife. This was the summer of 80 or 81 or so. I learned that he was a WW2 vet. I was 10-11 years old and right at that age where going into the woods to play war with my friends was what occupied our summers. I asked him tons of questions and he told the best stories about the war. By the end of the vacation, every one of my friends in the neighborhood we be at the house at some point during the day to hear his stories every day. I remember he was in both the European as well as the Pacific theater. I remember he told me about the first time he was directly shot at...they were hiding behind a hedgerow and he told his sergeant "Hey Sarge, we better move there's a ton of bees in these bushes" to which his sergeant replied, "you idiot, get your head down, those aren't bees!". He seemed like a *very* old man then, and that was 40 years ago, but a lot of that was due to the fact that as a 10 year old, even a 50 year old seems really old. It makes me sad that we are losing the last of these vets now and they'll soon all be gone. Some of my fondest memories of my life are me and my friends gathered around him in my kitchen that summer asking him questions and hearing his stories.

I keep remembering this quote. I watched Band of Brothers many years ago. The story told is one of courage, bravery, horror, fearlessness and heroism. The actors did a superb job portraying these men and the series was excellent, if not the greatest thing I have ever watched to date. The interviews got me, not one single man was anything but modest. They were braggarts, they didnt glorify the war and their time in the service. Instead they were humble, they told their story and were modest about it. I do not think anyone can ever come close to the greatest generation. Everyone who was involved in the war effort, no matter what side they were on..

Major Winters said what was in my mind...
But with thoughts out of order and not so nice and emotional...
Because I also served in the company of heroes.
Therefore, my son, Ivan, whether I was a hero, I cannot judge. A hero judges a hero.
    Strength and honor, Major Winters.

That undying bond that drives you to put the safety of your friends first, and not your own, never goes away. And after all those years since combat, that man said "no, but I served in a company of heroes" is a testament to that. War is an ugly, awful thing. But now, at the end of the day, these guys (and myself, from recent service) CHERISH the comradery and love for their friends, and think about it everyday. Despite all of its ugliness, war sometimes does produce wonderful things.
