For my fellow fine hair folks: In one of the early videos she mentioned using aloe instead of oil for the pre-shower routine if you have fine hair and that is 100% my go-to. I found a 100% aloe gel. I comb and boar bristle brush my hair first, then put in the aloe gel and let sit for a half hour before taking my shower. It does dry and harden but easily resoftens in the shower before rinsing out. After the shower, I put one single drop of jojoba oil into my palm and put it on my still-wet ends. I don’t use the clay yet, I’m finishing up an all-natural shampoo bar first. I went to once a week showers almost immediately using this method and it’s made a huge difference. It does get a touch more oily the second half of the week but nothing I think anyone noticed but me. I swear boar bristle brush outs on my scalp has led to all the new growth baby hairs I now sport. I want to add in cornstarch next for the oily half of my week, as well as the clay and ACV. I hope this helps anyone else with my hair type that’s on the journey!

Have you tried MCT oil for your pre-poo? I am not following this yet, but I use her herbal hair oil on my scalp and omg, my hair does Not get oily, almost no shedding after just a few applications 😮... I am going to hold my SO down & try it on his oily hair...
the herbal properties you need are oils soluble. I have baby fine hair and MCT is a super lightweight oil if you choose to make a scalp oil.

Number one factor in ayurvedic hair care is patience. We are very used to conventional shampoo and conditioner getting it done in minutes. It takes time to use and cleanse natural products from our hair. Once we realize this and set aside time to care for, not "do something" to our hair, the rest is quite easy, rewarding, and relaxing.

I need to make my clay into a cream style paste and coat my entire hair, wrap in plastic and leave for 10-15 minutes then rinse thoroughly or my hair is not clean. I have to careful with adding too much oil as my hair is not as long as Katherine’s. Use your own intuition and take her sensational advice and tips as a guide only. Thanks for all your videos! I have fine hair. I stopped shampooing my hair over two years ago and have been following your hair care routine for the last four months. I’ve certainly had to tweak some things like lighter oil washes and generally washing less frequently. I do add oil to my ends almost daily. I exercise daily and water washing seems to do the trick. The rhassoul clay is great. The MSM is incredibly helpful. My hair has never been so long and healthy. I’m obsessed and it feels so nourishing and feminine to take care of my hair this way. Fine and curly hair here (with daily workouts) 👋 My little twists to the routine:
If hair is sweaty, do scalp-only washes. Look it up, saves the lengths of your hair, dries fast.
Skip the coconut oil completely. Only use jojoba oil. I loved doing coconut oil treatments overnight but only regular shampoo got it out. The clay doesn’t get it out of my lenghts.
Use a shampoo brush when you rinse out the clay from your scalp.
Use warm water for the clay wash. It helps washing out the oils. Use cold water only for rinsing out conditioner and maybe ACV (I leave mine in).
Brush your hair daily to get all the dust and stuff out that gets in there if you live in a city. It makes your scalp way less itchy.
Boar bristle brushes made my scalp feel itchy don’t know why. My scalp has mild psoriasis. But a wooden brush works great.
Clean your brushes after every use.

After combing your hair it leaves grease in the brush. If you don’t clean it, it might make your hair greasy next time you use it. But if that doesn’t happen with your brush and your hair, don’t clean it every time, it’s no problem. I mostly finger detangle my hair now anyway and brush it very seldomly with a brush, which makes this problem obsolete.

@@Sunshine-is_here_to_stay I have fine, curly, thin hair and although my hair loves coconut oil (some hair doesn't do well with it, mine gets extra strong and curly) the clay also doesn't remove the oil from my hair. I'm not looking for the squeaky clean feeling of traditional shampoo, but it looks and feels weighed down and oily. Some hair is just like that with oil and clay. You'll have to experiment with different oils or just Jojoba oil or just know that if you want to treat your hair with an oil mask, you'll have to make choices about how to get the majority of that oil out. For myself, I treat my hair to a thicker oil massage the night before a good wash. I plan to wash with a clarifying shampoo or sometimes a natural shampoo bar. I've decided that the use of the shampoo a few times a month is worth the benefits of the oil. 🤷🏽‍♀️ But maybe you'll think different and that's A-ok! Best of luck as you find your own routine!

I have tried clay washing and oils, and they have not worked for me. (Fyi, my hair is also down to my hips, so evidently I'm treating it reasonably well.) Recently I tried to "tough it out" for a few weeks, to see if I could get over the hump, but eventually gave up. My hair looked terrible-stiff, less curly, and was very heavy.
In my personal experience, the issue is not whether my hair is too fine or not curly enough to use the oils, but rather its POROSITY. I only discovered recently that my hair is extremely low porosity, and that has made a significant difference. When you have hair like mine, your hair is not inclined to absorb oil AT ALL unless it (your hair) is heated, which opens the cuticle.
I've found some deep conditioners (low oil, low protein) that work well for me, and I do a heat treatment with them every week or two. I may make a variation of your oil, but with only very light oils, and try that, but I know now that the only chance I have with it is if 1. it's only a little of it, and 2. my hair HAS to be heated to absorb anything.
(Fyi, comment edited because YT kept messing up my formatting.)

maybe try putting oil on damp hair (dampening it with mix of water+sugar, rose water or aloe vera - that's going to add a moisturizing/humectant factor), it's pretty popular where I live for people with lower porosity hair or when hair lack moisture :)

Dealing with low porosity is my difficulty as well. For years I was frustrated because I wanted to use oil in my hair, but found that even light oils like jojoba and grapeseed would just sit on the surface of my hair and never be absorbed. I dont use any heat on my hair, so for daily use, my solution has been to use a spray of 1 part light oil (moringa is my favorite, but sometimes I also use argan) to 3 parts rosewater. Of course, oil and water don't stay mixed, so I shake up the spray bottle right before each use and spay it mostly on my ends (my hair is thigh length, wavy, and fairly thick). I also have another bottle of just rosewater, which I use as an even lighter moisturizer and also as a sort of hairspray once I've put my hair up.
For a prewash scalp treatment, I use a mix of jojoba and moringa, sometimes with a just a bit of castor or coconut oil in it, but definitely not with anything heavier like olive or avocado oil just. These simply don't wash out of my hair.
The clay wash also has not worked for me on its own. Every time I've used it, I can never get it to rinse out, and am left with that tacky feeling --- and this is using only using 2 tbsp in 2 cups, and spending an extra 20 minutes in the shower rinsing, rinsing, and rinsing. Apple cider vinegar also does not agree with my hair. I've tried taking the concentration down to 1 tsp in 2 cups of water, and my hair, particularly the ends, would still feel stripped and staw-like. And, at that low concentration it was useless at getting the clay out.
Sooo, I have gone back to my shampoo/conditioner bars that I've been using for the past couple of years and absolutely love (Viori is the brand). I have started using the clay about once a month (so about every 3 washes) before I shampoo, I leave it for a couple of minutes to absorb the oil pre-wash on my scalp, then shampoo everything out with the bar. So far, that has worked much better for me.

    • @Leah_Tewari
      @Leah_Tewari Рік тому +4

I was like this too, with extremely low porosity. Since using henna and other Ayurvedic herbs, including fenugreek, it helped to correct my porosity. Also using a water softener system on my house (or a shower head filter) also helped. One of my favorite clays for low porosity hair is Bentonite Clay which detoxes and cleanses really well.

    • @PurelyCoincidental
      @PurelyCoincidental Рік тому +3

@@AMMCFSES Thanks for taking the time to write out such a detailed response, with a lot of things for me to think about. I've had a similar experience with the clay wash, which is unfortunate, since my skin likes clay. Trying it as a pre-wash sounds like it might be a good compromise.
Fyi, I'm not putting a lot of heat on my hair for the deep treatments, just enough to keep it (and me) warm. Usually, I lie down and read for a while and wrap a heating pad around my head.
Lastly, I wish I could go that long between washes. I have to shampoo every few days, although sometimes I can stretch it to a week if I don't use any gel. The problem for me isn't so much the oil-I could manage that-but that I need to exfoliate my scalp regularly, as I do with the rest of my skin. My skin is extremely sensitive, and it's taken a long time to find products that work for me...but one thing that hasn't changed is that it just likes a good scrub once or twice a week. The scalp flakes stick to the oil on my hair and won't rinse out on their own, so out comes the shampoo. My skin otherwise is behaving reasonably right now, so I'm okay with this truce, lol.

I have all grey hair, have only been washing my hair every three weeks or so for over two years now using only organic shampoos and conditioners. That right there has helped my hair immensely. Now, and for the last several months, I have been following Katherine’s routine: herbal oil, clay wash and acv rinse, boar bristle brush…the whole process. Note: my hair is very like hers in that it is naturally curly, tends toward dryness and USED TO break at about mid back length.
So far I have been very pleased with my results. I have had much growth with less breakage, it is thicker all the way to the ends and is stronger and soft. I opted to use the cassia as I didn’t want to risk henna coloring my grey as I’m quite fond of it 😊. It is true that after 4-5 days my curls are not as pronounced but I don’t mind it. I begin using the bbb after that, as often as every couple of days and until my next wash. If I desire my curls to come back, I spray my hair with filtered water and a bit of essential oil (for scent) and the curls come back-not so much like after a wash day but still quite nice. I use jojoba oil on my ends about every 3 days or so, usually coinciding with (after) a good brushing and misting with water. Now, for the first time in my life, I am feeling the weight of my hair; it is almost to the top of my hips. The historic hair styles are definitely helping with distributing that weight which means I’m not losing any hair around the hairline.
Katherine, thank you so much for taking the time to do all the research, filming, editing, answering all of our questions, offering your recipes and sharing your results so we can benefit from your experience. I am 60 this year and have been struggling with my curls my whole life, unable to get growth or health for them. I always wanted to be that long, curly, shiny grey haired woman when I was “of an age”, and that is precisely where I’m headed. Much gratitude to you. ❤

I have fine, somewhat wavy hair (close enough to straight for those wondering) that tends to get greasy easily. I do get sweaty fairly often because I'm in a greenhouse on a regular basis. Some things I've learned 4ish months in: water quality makes a big difference. If you have hard water, you will need to wash your hair more often. We just got our water softener up and running 2 months ago, and I've been able to go from needing to wash my hair once a week to being able to wash about once a month or less. I brush my hair with a boar bristle brush about every other day, and if it's feeling greasy, I rinse my hair in hot water. This only works with soft water. Before we got our water softener, no amount of rinsing would get the greasyness out of my hair. I had to do an entire wash once a week or week and a half. Now, I rinse my hair about 2-3 times a week. If I get sweaty or dirty, I rinse more as needed. My clay wash mixture is about 3 tablespoons rhassoul clay with 1 tsp each manjistha and astragalus root powder (Ayurvedic herbs) in about 3 cups of water. I do 3-4 "washes" with this, then rinse thoroughly. For conditioner, I use about 1/4c goatmilk, 1 tsp raw honey, and 1/8 tsp jojoba oil. I leave this in for about an hour, then rinse thoroughly. Then I do an ACV rinse 3-4 times, leaving it in for a couple minutes each time before rinsing with 1/4c ACV in 3-4c water. I use jojoba and argan oil in my hair as needed, usually just on the ends, but very light amount. If my hair feels dry, I'll add more. I add oil 1-3 times a week, depending on how my hair feels. I added lavender, chamomile, frankincense, and holy basil essential oils into the argan oil I use. I never wear my hair down; it's always in a fairly protective style. I find braids really help my hair hold onto moisture without getting greasy. I have very low porosity hair, so it tends to not hold onto moisture. I do shower pretty much every day because I have farm animals to take care of, as well as a greenhouse. I usually cover my hair when I'm working with the animals. I only get my hair wet when I'm rinsing it. Otherwise I keep my hair pinned up so it doesn't get wet in the shower.
At the start of all this, I did need to do a final wash with a clarifying shampoo to get any silicone residue out of my hair.

Yes, you first do the oil. I coat my hair with oil and let it sit for an hour or two. Then I wash my hair with the rhassoul clay in aloe vera juice. Then I rinse thoroughly with just water and finish up at the end with an ACV rinse. So oil, clay and then rinse. Rinsing takes a little longer because of the clay. Rinsing out regular shampoo is definitely faster.

Hi, fine, oily, hair lady here. I just started to grow my hair out from really short, it's still above my shoulder. I've had this routine of chopping off my hair then growing it out than chopping off again every couple of years so I have some experience in this... I've been using a modified version of Katherine's routine for about two months now. My hair is really soft and shiny and it feels a bit thicker already. I don't have as much dandruff either. I didn't notice any difference in growth rate but my hair has always grown very slowly and my focus was on fighting the oil and dandruff.
Brushing: every night and morning I detangle my hair with a boar bristle and nylon brush then brush it out once more with a purely boar bristle brush, then I massage my head a little because it feels sooo good. I have a small bamboo comb that I use to create the part but other than that forget any combs with straight fine hair. Boar bristle+nylon brush is your best friend. I use Katherine's vinegar and water rinse for the brushes every day and wash them with my shampoo bar when I wash my hair.
Covering the hair: I put my hair in a turban for the night, satin or cotton shawl. I wash my shawls every time I wash my hair so I always use a clean one on my clean hair. (Silk would be better probably but honestly it's pretty expensive.) It helps my hair stay soft and tangle free. When I work from home I also put a scarf on my hair during the day. That is especially useful if your hair is so short that you can't really do an updo yet. I use two clips to secure the satin shawl because it's pretty slippery.
Hair wash: I was my hair about twice a week. Using corn starch overnight can help me drag out the days between washes a little bit, with one or two days. Before washing I put a mix of castor, argan, jojoba, neem and vitamin E oil on my hair. I add some essential oils, e.g. rosemary. (I currently use lavender because I'm out of rosemary and I love lavender anyway lol) After a head massage (again - super relaxing) I leave the oil on for 0.5-3 h, not overnight. I skip this step about once every two months, when I feel like there is too much buildup in my hair because it gets oily too quickly. I've been washing my hair with shampoo bars for at least six years now? I don't use clay at all yet, too much hassle for me currently. Maybe I'll try it though because it's probably really good. For the same reason (too much hassle) I stopped using flex seed gel too but I absolutely recommend it because it makes your hair super soft and shiny. After washing my hair twice with the shampoo bar I put on my conditioner (Biofficina Toscana, I don't know if it's available outside Europe but I'm sure you can find something similar) and leave it on until I wash my brushes with the same shampoo bar I use on my head. Then I rinse it out, then an apple cider vinegar rinse and a cotton shirt for drying. I use a diffuser if I don't have time to air dry. I use a leave in rice water based conditioner (also by Biofficina) and that's it. I don't add any more oils or anything to my hair because it will become super oily super fast. Brushing with the BB+N and BB brush twice a day are the key for conditioning your hair.
Hope this helps, love you all, love you Katherine, good luck with the baby 🐥🍼💕

I wanna add that I live in a city with nasty, nasty air quality unfortunately so I don't think it's possible to decrease the hair washing frequency a lot more for me. And the oils I use are ones that were/are on hand for me, adding e.g. fenugreek seeds would probably be great. I have some leftover henna though so I'll add that to my next batch.

For the question about sweat. I work out every day and only wash my hair monthly. I let my hair dry out from the sweat, then I gently massage my scalp to distribute the sebum, I gently detangle, and brush with boar brush. After doing all of that I notice my hair does not look oily and does not smell.

I have wavy but very fine hair, so if I dare to use coconut oil, jojoba oil, shea butter or castor oil my hair looks so heavy and oily. My hair loves olive oil for pre shampoo and almond oil to use on daily basis.
I use 1/2 cup of ghassoul clay and a cup of water.
I do use a hair mask of a natural brand and ACV as well.

I have thin curly like hair and I mostly use clay. Sometimes I use another recipe to it which helps me with my hair: 1 egg yolk, 1 tablespoon honey and half a lemon (if you have thicker hair you might need to add more). This I use sometimes just as a shampoo and sometimes (when the oils build to much up) I use it after the clay wash. Give it a try.

I use rosewater mixed with a little glycerin (maybe about a teaspoon to a tablespoon in an 8 oz spray bottle of rosewater) as a daily leave-in spray for the mids and ends of my hair, between washes--revives my wavy/medium curliness, relieves dryness, restores shine, detangles beautifully. I use castor oil as a pre-wash treatment/conditioner, just on mids to ends. I have white hair (went white very very early), and it begins to yellow when it is dry, or if I use the wrong products. My hair is hip-length, it is fine (actual hair shaft thickness) but medium-thick (bulk of hair growth taken together). I intermittently only do a scalp shampoo (putting the length "up"). I do also use some of the same tips and types of tips you recommend. BTW, I love Melaleuca shampoo (gentle, simple, pure and clarifying).

I have always used Melaleuca Herbal Shampoo. I would use Affinia moisture conditioner, but they changed that formula and now I hate how my hair feels with their products. I'm going to give Katherine's routine a try, modified for thin, straight, oily hair and a very active lifestyle. Thankfully its fall, but in the summer, my hair gets 100 percent sweat soaked 2 times a day on the farm. Not sure how to handle summer with this method.

Congratulations on the baby!!! I have one 14 month old. babies are the greatest joy! Also, I experimented with the advice you gave in your previous videos and found my own washing routine. I still am evolving it. My favorite thing though is the rhassoul clay. It makes my hair soooo nice and soft. To get it rinsed out i always rinse well massaging my scalp with regular water THEN i put in acv leave it for a minute or so then rinse again. The ACV helps get all the rest out. That and oiling my hair the night before. One curly hair stylist says coconut oil is great because it's a penetrating oil but I think any oil is better than none because the point is to protects the ends and hair from getting TOO stripped. I have and oily scalp though so I oil the night before and then wash my hair with shampoo twice.

I have very fine, wavy curly hair and I have had success using homemade oat milk, pressed thru a nutmilk bag, and then as a leave in, I take a tsp of flax seed in just boiled water, and put that into a custard cup and take it up to the bathroom, after my shower, I strain it and use it as a leave in conditioner. And my hair seems to love that. BUT, I think an ideal wash schedule might include alternating clay and oatmilk. I have also used rye flour and made a milk of it too, to wash my hair. I think rotating using the clay/oatmilk/ryemilk wash would perhaps be best over time.

This has been so fascinating reading everyone’s different routines. I have been shampoo free for 2years. I have butt length thick hair that is very fine with a TINY bit of natural wave. My scalp tends to be oily. I wear it up in a no snag French clip or plain platted braid and cover with cotton snood (religious). Literally all I do is a hot water rinse (we have hard water) once a week and a white vinegar rinse followed by warm water once a month. I brush every other day either braiding or using my French clip to keep it up and contained in between. I only do a deep conditioning coconut oil treatment once or twice a year (I have a friend from Hawaii who does it for me when she’s in town). She saturates everything and then French braids it and I leave it in for several days. Then I do the vinegar and warm water rinses as usual. The only struggle I’ve had has been finding the right brush as the oils in my hair tend to stick to traditional plastic brushes and they get gross and start to snag. I recently switched to a plastic bristle brush and it’s been a lot better but I think I’m going to give the boar bristle brush a try. I don’t get split ends anymore and my hair has never been this long or healthy.

Its been about 3 wks and I have only rinsed and used baking soda and water once. I use some coconut oil here and there as well as some deep conditioner on my ends only. So far I can see why this no poo method works and I love it. My hair seems to really like not having heavy chemicals on my scalp. I just got the clay today so I am looking forward to very infrequent washings and light conditioning. I also have decided to use cold air on my hair whenever I blow dry to see how my hair responds overall in about 3 months. Normally, my hair looks unwashed by Day 4, but, when spraying my hair and then brushing 100 strokes once dry (I had to repeat this process twice, every day from Day 4 on), my hair did not look or feel unwashed or dirty. If I did this every day after wash day, I might not need to do it twice! I will try cornstarch later to see whether it's best to do each once, or to do ACV twice. I have below shoulder length silver hair ( My wisdom hightlights I joke about often). Fine & straight, with a combo of dry & oily & dandruff used to always be a problem. I found the solution, sulfer soap!. I wash it every fortnight or longer. It does go through that oil slick moment where it does look manky on it. I just wear it tucked up under a head scarf hat to keep it clean, tangle free & avoid elastic bands. Every night I first use a wooden wide tooth comb & fingers to gently untangle any little knots and then the bristle brush as it distributes the natural oil evenly and eventually it looks shiny and healthy. Before washing I do a oil treatment the night before, braid it up & shampoo the with sulfer soap the next day. I use a just a little oil to comb through especially on the ends. I have found your videos to be wonderful & have taken on a few tips that have been benefical. All the very best for the upcoming birth of your Baby. 🙂

    • water rinse, as Katherine suggests for workout salty sweat, to try and deal with the ocean salt (has anyone any experience or success with this?)
Any other swimmers out there??? What are you doing, and can you think of any other ways to avoid washing 3+ times a week. Advice welcome! 💙🌊💦

Not a swimmer, but I have very light blonde hair that turns green in the pool. I started fully wetting my hair with well water before going in the pool. If its already soaked, it won't take in as much chlorine. Not sure about the salt. I'd probably do oils before the ocean, and well water before the pool...only to avoid getting too many oils in the pool water.

I’m not up to a week between washings, but I can now go up to three days between washings. I’ve always been a wash every day person as my hair is fine and prone to be oily, so being able to wait until day three is huge. I am only using a little jojoba oil on my ends while still wet after washing. I use a shampoo bar and an ACV rinse. Putting my hair up has been the biggest thing to help get me longer between washing so far.

I had to re-read this comment. I thought maybe I made this comment. It sounds just like my hair. I’m up to 4 days, and that’s pushing it. Stopped using traditional shampoo January 9th. Been wanting to try a shampoo bar but then I saw the clay wash video and I really like the clay wash. Cheers!

I have fine hair and I have a natural hair care routine. My hair grows really fast however I cut it every month 2 inches to be mid back length. I use hemp oil. For fine hair I found hemp oil is good. Do you think I could add rice water to my clay wash?

My sisters and I decided to follow your hair tips and I am in love with it! My sister dyes her hair religiously and we subbed the henna for cassia and used rosemary oil in the weekly oil, it turned her hair green, blue and black, but did not effect me at all! I did research and found it was the rosemary oil. So if you dye your hair a light color religiously be careful of the oils you are using! I love your hair tips, the clay cleans my hair wonderfully and I have straight fine long hair. I wash my hair on the sixth day, I cannot go a whole week. Do you have any suggestions to keep your hair smelling good for the whole week?

I have fine blond hair. I used to dye it but it damaged my hair, so I decided to switch to henna. It turned my platinum blonde hair to a vibrant neon green shade. No hairdresser would take me. I used some red colouring shampoo for a while to balance out the green. So yes, now I know not to use henna on dyed blond hair.
I use rosemary oil on my natural dark blond hair and it doesn't color it. I put about four drops of essential oil into my coconut oil to treat my scalp.

How are you (anybody) washing your boar bristle brush? It is sooooo gross with dirt, oil and dead skin if you don't wash it, but if you DO wash it with soap and water the water gets down into the squishy part of the brush and it is probably growing mildew and mold in there if I had to guess cause you can't dry it out from there and you know it's gotta be mixed with some of the stuff you were trying to wash off your brush, so lots and lots of food for potential mold growth. How do you keep this brush from being a gross mess?

I personnally have a lot of issue with my BB brush. My brush picks up so so so much dust and oil and idk from my scalp. It looks like a good thing but I have to use a comb on my brush every day which leads a lot of bristle to fall, and I am afraid to damage it in the long run. Am I the only one?

I have an issue with boar bristle brushes in general, they dont pick up my dense smooth hairs. I prefer using a series of increasingly fine wood combs on my own hair for this reason as they still help distribute the natural oils.

Wash it with shampoo once per week, and put a little oil on the bristles. It will impart a lot of shine when brushing, and cut down on frizz

I got mine off Amazon and so far no bristles have fallen out so it might just depend on the type of brush you buy. We apparently are supposed to clean it after every use though

I love my boar bristle brush, but I've found that by using it, I've got split ends, which I never did before, I brush it gently in sections ( my hair is hip length and 2c wavy) I think it's because I brushed it for a hour each time? Plz tell me what iam doing wrong because I love my brush

I have fine hair. Castor oil works well for me. It closely matches my skins sebum and clogs pores less then jojoba oil. I can use it as a massage before bed and it will sink in really well. Also, a cap full of acv in a 1 liter shaker bottle does well conditioning my hair. 2 caps if my hair is extra alkaline from a shampoo/conditioner bar. I’m able to do this everyday without it drying my ends. Most days that’s all I do is the acv rinse to get the dirt/sweat out.

I usually wash my hair every 2 weeks. I have been searching for an alternative to shampoo for years. My hair was super dirty and oily so today I washed my hair with the clay and the
apple cider rinse. Wow! My hair is soft and shiny. Thank you so much!
