Carers are paid by Private companies. Bring it all back under the NHS with no Private involvement . It's the only way.

I can identify with this, my close relative is in a care home (private equity owned) that charges near 80 grand a year. Still pays its care staff a pittance of course. Funnily enough, most of the neighbouring establishments are owned by the same company...!

As a nurse, I can hand in heart say that we have systematically undervalued caring in this country. In the nhs they are constantly trying to con you into some ‘well-being’ shite instead of paying you more. Conning you with guilt trips about ‘your patients’ instead of not paying you more.
İ think the publlic would give more if we ever got the opportunity. Nurses R much needed & respected. You do the most for everyone.

She laughed at the MP Phillip Davies calling for a men's day debate (with the obvious intention of trying to undermine discussions of women's issues), as if two thirds of MPs aren't men and they don't have every opportunity to talk about men's issues whenever they wish. She has supported targeting mental health interventions and emphasised that suicide is the biggest killer of young men.

She is my MP. Her constituency used to be a safe Tory seat, until the immigrant vote turned Yardley into a safe Labour seat. Jess can rest assured that she won't be getting my vote.

It grinds me when they say, “people are happier in work” in relation to the mental health issue, yeah when they actually want to do that job. Forcing people to do a job they don’t want to do would lead to worse mental health. 😡
Not just that but there's disabled people who want to work but just need that bit of help so they can but the Tories would take away that help if they do work.

There are those as well who are filled with absolute terror at just the idea of leaving the house or even speaking to strangers on the phone or in person.
But forcing people with mental health issues (who for many are the result of trauma) to work in the care sector, maybe assisting people who are nearing the end of their life or people with dementia and Alzheimer’s, which will only cause further psychological, emotional and physical stress, is just ridiculous and positively cruel.
@mclark1515. I am 72 and retired. Yes I had good jobs working with wonderful people but I also had two that I hated and couldnt wait to leave.Thankfully in those days you could pick and choose.

I’d rather have people from all over the world looking after my relatives who want to do the job. Caring is a vocation not just a normal 9 to 5. It’s hard work. I’d rather have someone from anywhere other than a Tory.

My sister and my aunt were both, what used to be called, home helps. They loved their jobs and went above and beyond to make sure that ‘their old people’ were safe and warm. Then Thatcher changed everything, time and motion primarily, reducing the time spent with clients to minutes not hours. And so on. Then privatised. But all of the managers were given laptops - so that’s all right then. She also dismantled Social Services.
Home Helps were an important part of the community. Our family got to know those caring for my gran and later my mum. Our families became firm friends and we attended each others christenings, engagements, weddings etc. The Tories haven't a clue, never have.
Thatcher dismantled the country, no surprise that the Tories say she ' saved' it.
I worked in the steel industry for many years, not much of it left now.

I am working in a care home as a Senior carer, my responsibility is to look after elderly people, medication, care plans, taking to GP or DN on a daily basis. I have completed NVQ 2,3and 5. My wages are absolutely shocking, for some strange reason care homes offering only 12h shifts, that means that loads of people are unable to work due to e.g. children, health issues. In my work place company which is never looking after staff, residents, and although we have had meetings in regards to changing hours, they still don't care that half of the staff have kids, some people have health issues. Unfortunately we will have to look for another job. We are paid absolutely crap money, running under staff constantly working Saturdays and Sundays 12hour shifts and we are silent when we complain. I honestly feel sorry for my residents as we are friends now and they are thrusting us. I am absolutely disconnected about how these big care companies are allowed to treat people that way, it's all about the money people are not important. 😫😫
The only thing preventing me having Robert Jenrick for breakfast is my taste buds.

She forgets she had a good nhs, dr when she needed, a dentist, could walk in and out of jobs, got social housing, cost of actual living was less in comparison to wages AND employers back then treated people far far far better! She finished work at 57 because she was very ill, which is fair but for those now who are very ill she thinks they're scamming and that her generation only said they were ill when things were very bad! It's painful to hear when she holds these views even towards her own old adult kids!

There is absolutely no way Jenrick would clean an elderly mans arse and change the bed sheets after they had soiled themselves in the night. Not just one either. Often 3 or 4 in a reasonably sized care home. I certainly wouldn't do it. Not if they paid me twice what they currently are. And Jenrick isn't serious about paying people more, is he? That's yet more empty promises.
We need a National Care Service directly funded by the Government alongside the NHS. Councils cannot cope with the ever increasing burden of funding care. I suspect 4/5ths of Council budgets goes on care. Strip this responsibility away from local taxpayers and let Council get on with doing the others jobs like potholes, parks, bins, libraries etc. Fundamental reform is needed in my view.
I would imagine that Jenrick would cheer-up old peoples' homes no end by painting swastikas on the walls and hanging-up Heironymus Bosch's depictions of Hell at the end of each bed. No cruelty too much effort for this kind, empathetic psychopath.
We cannot really start paying care workers properly until be bring the sector back into the government hands. If you let it stay private then all you can do is put more government money in and have little or no guarantee that it won't just boost private profits. There are a lot of people in Politics that have made their fortunes from social care companies so asking them to vote to dismantle those companies would be a big ask.

Max , truly great post my 93 year old mum relies on carers from all over the world really fantastic people, my problem is the fact these people are being exploited by private entrepreneurs these same entrepreneurs are also exploiting the government funding for welfare . This has to change now ! A service is a service it should not be farmed out for third party profit. Water , energy , transport , healthcare etc

Max... during the Cameron/Osborne years the social care budget was CUT by £6billion. It was pointed out at the time how devastating this would be to the sector. When it all started to go pear shaped they put back in £3billion and wanted praise for it.
Not just low pay, it would mean him having to do a proper job.

I am a pensioner.If MPs have "other interests" to supplement their £90k a year wage AND receive more than that in allowances how the F*** can we pensioners survive on £165 a week?
I worked in Social care many years ago when it was run by the Council. It all went wrong when councils put the work out to the private sector suposedly for cost and choice. Care homes were sold to private concerns and care in the home went to private agencies. Care work and carers are seen as the lowest of the low. Everybody admits its needed but nobody wants to fund it or raise its profile.
She's an amazing woman. I really hope she's makes it into the house of lords...

To add to my previous: it was also possible to make a career out of caring. People were well trained, reasonably well paid. It was a job worth doing.
