    Nice video. Love me some jerky! I never thought of powdering Microgreens as they compact so well after Freeze Drying. I freeze dry the micro greens I don't have plans for. Freeze dried food and then powdered in a blender condenses it down SO MUCH. I can't imagine the amount nutrients contained in - powdered and Freeze Dried Microgreens - in a one quart jar!

    Great video as always. I’ve been dehydrating my micro greens for awhile now and it is another great way to eat your greens. I dehydrate mine at no higher than 105 degrees to maintain maximum nutrients.

    Congrats on selecting a good dehydrator, because there's a lot of junk out there. Rear to front airflow across (not up thru) multiple racks is a must, as are digital controls. I also use mine for fermenting/autolysing sourdough, yogurt and dosa/dhokla batter because it has low settings like 104 and 95F available. I actually use it more often for bread than for drying herbs.
    COMMENTS: 158F for 4hrs is hotter than optimal for drying greens ... you're denaturing vitamin and enzyme content. I recommend using more shelves loaded more thinly, a lower temp (no higher than 132F ish, or better still 122F), and letting it run overnight for 8-12 hours ... even 24 hrs, if it needs it, to reach brittle stage. It takes longer yes, but the results are better.
    TECHNICAL TRIVIA: 158F is optimal temp for amalyse conversion in all grain brewing for soaked barley and wheat. I've actually malted, redried and milled my own wheat on occasion.

    its very suggestable to blend your food under vacuum, the oxygen that is being sucked into the blend will oxidize alot of the vitamins otherwise.
    quick example, my banana smoothies oxidize to a grayish color after blending but stay vibrant yellow when I blend them under vacuum.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 роки тому +3

      Basically all of them! I think we have about 20 varieties that we've dehydrated and blended... Basils are great for seasoning... The Radish and Mustards are great for spices... Broccoli are great for adding to smoothies and if they have stronger flavor, pastas and stuff. We have some Amaranth that has beautiful red flakes to it and a great earthy flavor. The sky is the limit :)

      Thank you so much!! We love this one because it gets solid reviews and looks really great for the pricepoint. We wanted something that would last us years (hopefully) and blend in with the stainless steel appliances we have... Lastly, we wanted to avoid ones with plastic because we've seen a ton of pictures where the plastic binds with the food and flakes off little thin layers... grossed us out, so we wanted to stick to stainless steel frame and trays.

    Very good idea ! When i discovered microgreens i thought about turning them into spices but wasn't sure it was possible. By the way you can dehydrate with a simple convection oven as long as the minimum temperature doesn't exceed 114,8 f (46 degrees Celsius) which i read was the temperature when the amount of nutrients starts degrading. But i'd suggest reading about it on internet.
    I was wondering, was the mustard still spicy when you taste it in powder ?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 роки тому +1

      If we still did Farmers Markets, we probably would! Though, it does become a value-added product and it is something that has been processed. Technically to do it and sell at a farmers market in our local area, I think we would have to dehydrate and pack it in a "food-safe kitchen" or something like that... so we would have to find a commercial kitchen to rent for a few hours to handle it there.

    • @shara4389
      @shara4389 2 роки тому

      Yes! It's called "conditioning". Put your dried goods in a airtight jar, set it aside for about 10 days and check it daily for any signs of moisture in the jar. If you see any and catch it quick enough, you can just dry it some more. But if it goes too far, mold will start and you loose it all. Just check it at least once a day. After you reach 10 days with no signs of moisture, pop a dessicant in there to keep it from getting moisture when you open and close the jar a lot.

    On the Grow- near the beginning, you give the criteria for the siding that the sprouts are ready to harvest. You said you could see something coming through that sounded like you were saying “STRULIES”. I did study botany, and I don’t recall that term at all. So I’m hoping this is a case of really truly unclear audio at that point.
    Would you mind terribly getting back to me and telling me what the term is. I’m certainly not afraid of doing the work, but I really do need to hear that term properly to know exactly what you’re saying.
    I’m new with micro greens and sprouts, and also New is freeze-drying. So I’m gonna quick look around online brought me to your video. I appreciate you sharing the information that you have, but I need a little extra help here.

    Why do you remove the marinade from the meat?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 роки тому

      Mainly because it can get a little thick and sticky with all the marinade. It can also drip into the dehydrator, which isn't bad, but an extra work to cleanup. You can leave it on too if you prefer more flavor and don't mind the mess.

      Also it will not dehydrate fast enough to be food safe if it is too wet.

    My dehydrator does not plug in because it is my solar oven. Free energy if the sun is out there. It's all good.

      @@OnTheGrow Have you ever considered it? If you are against animal cruelty and exploitation you may find is a pretty consistent position! Damn... I was really convinced you were already...

      @ They said they arent. And sadly the meats that th GOVERNMENT Allows are their Own. Until we farm and have ETHICAL practices You do You Best. Yet to Be sad someone isn’t VEGAN for what the Government does and allows. Is SELF-ish, Kinda.
      Be Happy You learn something. Folks dont have to be what your or my catered idea of them is.

    •  3 роки тому +1

      @@iriefarms1212 it's nice of you to try to defend them, although unnecessary, as I was having a perfectly nice conversation with them. Regardless I bet the government doesn't mandate anyone to eat animals at all. I'm not sad for what the government allows or not. I'm sad because they seem to be very nice people and yet, probably without even really thinking about it, contribute to an immense amount of unnecessary cruelty and suffering when they consume animal products. If you are aware of this issue then I would say you are the one who selfishly puts the taste pleasure, tradition or convenience above the life of another sentient and conscious being who didn't want to die.
      Also I am happy I learned something but probably isn't what you think. I learned that no matter how friendly you approach someone on the topic of ending animal abuse, as I did, people always get offended for being shown they are unknowingly contributing to perhaps the most pressing moral issue in the present day. So I thank you for showing me that the way I present this topic has nothing to do with how people receive it. Do you know why vegans are known to be agressive in their expositions? It's because they got tired of starting in a friendly manner and then encountered someone like you who insulted them.
      And sure, no one has to be like me. I'm also against racism, homophobia, domestic violence, anti semitism and pedophilia. But I guess you only have a problem with my views when the victim I'm defending isn't human, right?
