    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Over a prime rib dinner, Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) explains to Jonathan (Keanu Reeves) and Mina (Winona Ryder) that vampires do exist and the rules to their existence.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Based on Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel, this film from Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter James Victor Hart offers a full-blooded portrait of the immortal Transylvanian vampire. The major departure from Stoker is one of motivation as Count Dracula (Gary Oldman) is motivated more by romance than by bloodlust. He punctures the necks as a means of avenging the death of his wife in the 15th century, and when he comes to London, it is specifically to meet heroine Mina Harker (Winona Ryder), the living image of his late wife (Ryder plays a dual role, as do several of her costars). Anthony Hopkins is obsessed vampire hunter Van Helsing, while Keanu Reeves takes on the role of Jonathan Harker, and Tom Waits plays bug-eating Renfield. Bram Stoker's Dracula was the winner of three Academy Awards.

      I like Anthony Hopkins' role as Van Helsing, too. I said the same thing in Minty Comedic Arts' video on Bram Stoker’s Dracula and someone said that it seems like he took after Al Pacino. I would believe that, but I think that's the intention. Yelling towards the supernatural enemy shows how powerful you are. Anyone agree?

      @stevekaczynski3793 8 років тому +12

      I did a bit of Internet searching to find out what late Victorian food was like, especially in restaurants. Roast beef was common, as I suspected anyway. Fairly low alcohol ale (about 2% alcohol) was often drunk, mainly because the water could be dangerous although this was less true as the Victorian era neared its end. It might be that, or some kind of fruit juice. Or they could have tired of historical accuracy and gone with Coca Cola...

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 8 років тому +11

      Steve Kaczynski
      Coca Cola did exist in the 1890's, but was unlikely to be sold in the UK at the time, although there were many Colas that were sold as medicinal drinks. Frankly, I think it was supposed to be beer, but they just used coke as a prop drink, because do you really want to have Anthony Hopkins downing mug after mug of real been with each retake?

    • @stevekaczynski3793
      @stevekaczynski3793 8 років тому +3

      Early Coca Cola had cocaine in it and I definitely don't think they would turn it loose on the cast and crew here. Most likely it was meant to be weak beer or ale, with modern Coke as a stand-in.

  • @unnatural6edq

    Even though Keanu Reeves' accent is atrocious, he was perfect for the character of Jonathan Harker. I've read the book several times, and this is *exactly* how Jonathan is in the book: attractive, slightly weak in character, and a bit of a pansy. So, in that case, Reeves was *perfect* for the role.

      @theshillneckedlizard8364 4 роки тому +45

      I didn't think Jonathan was weak in the book at all. Bewildered and confused, yes, but who wouldn't be? Polite and overly conscientious, but that's just because he's English :-) Climbing down the sheer cliff of the castle wall to escape took a lot of courage, as did dodging the wolves and gypsies to make his way to the train station. Yes, he suffered a nervous breakdown once he got to the safety of Budapest, but one can hardly blame him after all he'd been through - it doesn't mean he's weak, it meant he'd had to be brave for too long.

Anthony Hopkins take is more earthy. It sounds like this Van Helsing has a grudge against Dracula besides wanting to RID the world of vampires!

    I don't understand why so many people bash Keanu Reeves in this film and Much Ado About Nothing and say he should have pursued a career in something else and I've studied the work of the "Giants" like John Gielgud, Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole and Lawrence Olivier. Yes, he may not be a 'giant' but he still has a good sense of inflection and expression in his voice and portrays the emotions of the characters fairly well.
    Sometimes, beginner actors start off a bit shaky and amateurish but that doesn't mean they have no talent; they just need more time to develop. If you were to compare a rich, complex role Keanu Reeves plays now to his work twenty eight years ago, you'd probably say "Wow! He's come a long way!"

    I understand the criticisms of this Dracula... but holy moly.. the way Coppola did the back story, Harkers journey to the castle and his time there with the count are some of the best scenes in movie history. As a 70s kid, Christopher Lee will always be Dracula, but Oldman was sooooo good. The costumes and sets..beyond amazing. Coppola should be extremely proud of the film

    This scene is actually funny from the beginning; the previous scene they cut the head of Lucy, then they begin this scene with a close up of the meat. And when Mina ask how did Lucy died they cut to all of them next to her corpse. Van Helsing is the only one in this movie that brings some humor. Coppola knows this and film it in such way; when VH insist Harker’s “infidelities” with the vampires , man he’s so funny.

    Van Helsing wasn't insensitive to the gruesomness and horror of Lucy's death. He was distraught by what happened and had it with Mina asking him about it. This is made clearer when he's protecting Mina from the vampires and says he won't let what happened to Lucy happen to her. Great acting by Mr. Hopkins.

    I remember how that roast beef looked juicy and succulent, never mind the scene just before it of Lucy's severed head. Also gave roast chicken with paprika a go for the first time because of the description in the book and especially how the dish itself looked when Dracula served it for Harker's dinner. Bugs are delicious also and quite nutritious. Hmm..just need something to wash it all down with.
