My question: The research report mentioned refers to our own study, or the previous study to make the study able to conduct in our place? Second question: Usually, this trustworthiness section usually write after data collection (Chapter 4) or can be written before data collected (chapter 3 methodology chapters). Thank you!

Marico, That’s a great question. You may occasionally see the terms reliability and validity used when discussing qualitative research in the nursing discipline. However, most researchers reserve the terms reliability and validity exclusively for quantitative research. The rationale behind that distinction is that the “pure” definition of reliability in research is typically thought of in terms of consistency with measurement. For example, in a quantitative study, would a survey yield similar/consistent results if given to the same study participants three weeks apart? That is an example of one type of reliability, test-retest reliability. It is describing qualities of the measurement instrument (survey). Qualitative studies do not use close-ended surveys like this. Instead, qualitative studies may use interviews, diaries, focus groups, observation, etc. As a qualitative researcher, I do not expect that every interview is going to yield perfectly consistent data. I understand as a qualitative researcher that I will get data that is unique to each individual and the context within which they exist. While I do look for patterns in interview data when analyzing the data, I do not want my interview questions to yield exactly the same data. Therefore, reliability does not apply to this situation. That’s why you’ll rarely see the term reliability discussed with regard to qualitative research. You may see validity discussed sometimes because it deals with measuring what we are supposed to be measuring (choosing the right type of data collection approach to match our research questions to yield the appropriate type of data-simplified). To make a long story shorter, the underlying philosophies of doing quantitative and qualitative research are unique. Please let me know if this doesn’t make sense.
