      They're pulling in mad money, so I doubt they're in any hurry to change their business practices. As much as it might suck to us enthusiasts, CRKT has a death grip on the economy market right now and is doing amazingly well.

      I would be happy even if they did sprint runs like Spyderco. This would let them keep their chunk of the budget market while simultaneously appealing to enthusiasts. I’m thinking a marketing style like William Boos has been doing. His knives are very much in demand but due to the limited number they sell out quickly. This would have a minimal effect on CRKT’s ability to produce their budget offerings. See this CRKT, please.

    The field strip option is huge if you're military and I'm surprised more knife manufacturerers aren't picking up on that. If you're in a desert theater you're going to get fine sand in your knife you don't want to have to carry a toxr wrench set with you to clean it. In my opinion you should at least be able to completely disassemble a knife with a Leatherman.

    I know its an older video but there is a torx screw on the clip side you can adjust to get rid of the blade play

  • @coleerik1
    @coleerik1 5 років тому +1

    Okay I've EDC'd this knife for months now and there is no blade play, and the blade doesn't hit the back-spacer. If you read the directions that come with it needs to be taken apart and put back together with the blade CLOSED. Doing this with the blade open seems to screw up the assembly.
    Also the blade profile and Aus8 steel make sharpening and stropping the knife super easy.
    I have no complaints and will continue to carry this knife everyday as my number one.

  • @jimboutilier7552
    @jimboutilier7552 6 років тому +16

    FWIW the side to side play can be adjusted by turning the main post that the lock grabs on to - this will make the fit tighter or looser. Too tight and it's much harder to get back together though. CRKT is often a showcase for attractive, interesting, and creative designs, and I applaud them for that. But sadly, these great designs are almost always let down by really poor materials and less than stellar fit and finish. I don't carry any CRKT products as a result. But I really would if they improved materials and workmanship - even at considerably higher prices. Maybe they should start offering more special editions that feature better materials, fit, and finish (they have for a few in the past, but were a little overboard in materials, and they should do more in the middle). Start using Titanium rather than Stainless, and D2 or better instead of AUS 8 as a blade steel and I'll start buying and carrying.

    On first glance, I like the curb appeal of the Homefront. But on closer inspection the gutter doesn't seem to make a lot of sense - other than to collect stuff - which I guess is the idea behind a -fuller- gutter. And what's going on with that choil? It's like one 6" step for a 3' high porch. And the blade hitting the back-spacer is like a door bell that's hooked to a 110 and not grounded. I like the thinking of being able to open it up easily, but not sure if there's a lot of value. How often are you going to use a front door that's 12' wide once you bring the sofa in sideways? Considering how many mfgs are turning out D2 or 14c28n for $40-50, how hard can it be? Maybe they've got a garage and backyard full of AUS8?

    Can't wait for that CRKT Sketch review. I just love how cheap that thing looks. Nice blade shape, though. I want one.

    I would still have much preferred phosphor bronze. They could have used press fit bronze bushings with Loctite 640 to ensure retention. Add that and move up to at least cts bd1 steel, I'd buy one even with a price increase. As it is it is a no go. I would be interested to see someone make new blades available for these field strip knives in better steel. Theoretically it would be easy to swap the blade. Although that just drives up the price more.

    The up side of the plastic washers is that when carelessly handled they go back in and work fine. Bronze washers are easily bent which would not be brilliant for disassembly in adverse conditions.

    Nick, I guess you're the wrong reviewer for this knife. It looks kinda 1940s Soviet to me, so maybe put yourself in Stalingrad mode and consider the advantages of this knife following a brutal wartime killing. Easy to strip and wash the blood out. Can field sharpen the soft blade on the edge of the victim's jaw bone. Hey, the pointy bit is all that matters anyway, so self dulling feature isn't a problem. And aus8 doesn't rust much.
    All good.
    👍👍👍👍

    Nick- Do you need proprietary hands to take this apart? The color and release time of this knife say WWI to me. Very cool field strip technology. The Homefront is out in different versions and Ken Onion is letting other CRKT designers use it. I guess you're paying a novelty tax on this design because the materials don't justify the price. Teflon can be fine so don't feel bad about your endorsement.

    Nick, thank you for the really "sharp" review ( a little pun there). (You must have had a really bad time with knife to miss making a pun. ) Seriously, I wanted to get this knife, but hearing from you about the blade edge issue with the spacer and the condition of blade 'play' , has caused me to give this knife a serious hard pass. Your reviews are honest and objective. It is truly unfortunate that CKRT produces and markets such knives. I have been collecting knives for over thirty years, and your line of thoughts matched what I would have had if I had bought this knife. Bottom line, everyone in the knife community will have to wait for ( I guess) another 10 to 15 years for the "Field Strip Technology" patent to expire in order to see what other knife companies will come up with. Again, this is unfortunate because I do like the concepts that CKRT develop, but they seem to fall short in the "execution" department. They should hire someone like you as a consultant. Thanks again for the fantastically "sharp" reviews....( Sorry, I had to make up for your missing puns in this review). Stay well and, from a humble collector's opinion, keep up the great work.

      just so you know there's a black version of this that's a little different in design not just color that fixes a few things, and its cheaper, 70 on sale right now. the notches on the back are more rounded out so it doesn't hurt the hand, the blood groove is gone, and mine has very little blade play especially compared to this video. Also mine doesn't have a problem with hitting the backstop either. seems like they heard some of the complaints and actually listened. Id still say to only get it if the field strip actually seems useful to you tho.

    Talk about a solution looking for a problem.
    I've spent thousands of hours either in the wilderness or on the job site, using a knife as often as possible as my go to tool.
    Never in my life, have I ever wished that while on the trail or on the site that I could quickly take apart my knife for a quick clean and lube. On two week deployments where sand has literally gotten into every orifice both on my body and in my gear, and I didn't feel like I needed to pop open my knife for a quick clean.
    It's not a bad idea. But I really don't think the usability really goes beyond the advertisement.

      V- Lasagna 70 bucks is still a little much for Aus-8, bladeplay, and the blade smacking the backspacer. I think the idea is great but the execution is quite poor. However this is still the first iteration of this technology. I can only get better from here. But it's CRKT so who knows lol

    @nickshabazz I've have this knife for a few years and now I can't get it to go back together. The head seems to be stripped. The lever doesn't lock down. Just has become non-functional.

    On. The. Money.
    On the other side of the coin: I’m still looking for my jaw!!!!! Teflon? Good? Behind me Beelzebub!!!
    Living in this world will make any decent human go nuts...
    PS: few grains of sand embedded in that Teflon/plastic washer and you’re done for it.

    Since the blade is one of the three prices why not have aftermarket blade options full seriations, different grinds etc... would make the blade much more useful and interesting.

    I was really considering buying this, the design is cool, the function is cool, but man getting a flat spot on the blade every time i close it? Yikes

    Neat idea. Butchered, half-retatfed execution.
    CRKT strikes again...
    Saw these at my local outdoor store for $80.
    Guy behind the counter told me to never buy this. He picked it up, shook it a little bit while open, and holy shit did that knife have play. It was shaking more than an epileptic kid in an earthquake. If he had kept it up the blade would have launched like Sputnik from the handle. He said that 90% of the homefronts they sold were returned to them.
    It's a shame. I was very intrigued when I first heard about this knife.

      It's simply not fool proof, now you could argue that a knife should be, but it's not the knifes fault.

      i own one, out the box it had zero play, it was smooth as silk and sharp as i needed, my local store told me its there best selling knife

    • @timpande6900
      @timpande6900 5 років тому

      @@kevinmorrice I have one also it also out of the box has zero blade play and as sharp as all hell, my blade doesn't hit the backspacer only if you push it harder than your supposed to, and I played with the pivot a little bit yeah it can have beyblade play just as any other knife but tighten the pivot and it's perfect matter of fact even if you shake it side-to-side with both hands and try and pry back and forth there is no blade play

    The only problem I have had with my Homefront is when I let someone else use the knife. The first time anyone tries to close the blade they always use the disassembly level at the star. I always get back a knife falling apart. lol

    Sorry Nick, the new home front designs are the same steel and price, one version is in 4116 German steel (a step backwards or a side step at best).

    This knife seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. If you need to be able to service your knife when you're out and about you should probably just be carrying a fixed blade. So many compromises being made that are just unacceptable. Yet another good design let down by the incompetent people at CRKT.
