Leafs can really flex a lot more than people think. Mine would rap and separate the front drive shaft when the pinion turned down under severe flexing. I put a limiting strap on the back of the pinion housing. It doesn't affect flex negatively and it keeps the pinion from twisting downward too far.
Go see Lou at Alcan Spring in Grand Junction. Make sure your weight over each tire is correct. He will design a leaf spring set up using his Orbit Eyes which allow a bunch more articulation without twisting the spring. And he can design spring packs to control your axle wrap. Call today. Don’t waste your time guessing. Been there, done that. Lou and team are worth every penny!
Yes it sure has been a long time since you've been in the shop. Your channel has turned into Matt's extravagant vacation trail riding Channel. A far cry from what the channel was originally.
We had videos in the shop 2 months ago. 5 months ago, and a whole series 6 months ago. And 13 years of multi weekly content before that. Sorry if this free entertainment isn't up the standards of your viewing pleasure 😉
I know there's a ton of options but another thought,,, remember the old school traction bars on a hot rod. If a person made a low profile set and for front they could mount on top of the spring and only be long enough to do the job. A little over a foot or so may do it and like the add a leaf, it would be softer on the drive line because you could set maybe an inch before a snubber hit the spring and gave your spring mount a bit of mechanical advantage.
FYI race car guys use hi grade 5 because they bend grade 8 shears because there harder also you can do 3/4 hiem track bar from the spring top plate back to mount on the frame right above the leaf pack, glad to see shop content
It's been tested to death, grade 5 will bend but grade 8 won't fail til way beyond the yield strength of grade 5. If you break a grade 8 the grade 5 would have fail long befor
Spring under the front. Was the way the old school Jeep guys did all their trucks. Spring under with ubolt flip. If it still wraps you can put a traction bar on the top of the spring out of the way from rocks.
@@bleepinjeep would love to see xj unibody rails swapped with square tube. Everyone is doing the frame stiffeners but you need something to weld too. Mine are all rust.

Speaking of the tire groover, can we get a close-up of whatcha did to the Paddies on the Scorpion? Always thought the center rib design was too tight for a M/T...
That add a leaf looks more like an overload spring to me. They're not actually designed to flex much at all. Basically a safety net for bottoming out the rear on trucks. I'd personally make a more progressive pack with 7-10 leaf springs that are all thin VS 5-6 thick ass springs.
Hey Matt, Have you thought about running the windshield wiper fluid to the top of the cab using PVC or something? So you can spray water and have it run down the windshield? Love your content man!
To help prevent axle wrap with leaf springs you, want to bias the spring pack to one side like old Mopar spring lack on muscle cars or 79' to 85' toyota front springs.
Team leaf springs! There's just somethin so cool about havin a very functional rig with leafs on it.where can I find one of those groovers? Mine is different than that one and it works good, but it seems yours is faster lol
Good question! Here is the link to that groover, it has 2 temp settings and I recommend getting the HD blades made just for this groover, they are expensive and hard to find but totally worth it! amzn.to/3jyuAmM. I used the 1 inch wide ones. amzn.to/3jyuAmM
Take a look at Balmar alternators & regulators for some serious charging power. I've used a 225 amp alternator with the MS614 regulator programmed to my battery bank(s) for a very large car audio system. These are marine rated so they're built really stout & can be a V-belt or serpentine style.
Does your town or fancy shop not have a pressure washer? Late 60's traction bars. Bolt to the axle using the standard "U" bolts. Shoulda left the add-a-leaf full length. It would work for sure then. I will say, you sure know how to air down. Nice!
That tire groover is taking a heck of a chunk off without much effort. Looks to work better than most. My old circular saw method is pretty fast but makes a terrible mess.
I am not a Toyota guy but they do use a stronger joint than a 1310 so maybe run them for the front driveline.Of course that would mean a whole new one.
