Thanks David! Yeah, I like it as well. It was fun to film, and honestly pretty fun to do the video editing for it. I had fun with that dub step music. I usually use more folky music, but for some reason this fish fight was calling for something a bit more up beat! HAHA
Enjoy your videos. They are getting better and better. Keep up the good work! I like that we can follow you around your environment and watch you learn by trial and error. Someday I would like to fish the San Juan too.
Thank you Robert! Its a fun place! I plan soon to explore around a bit though. I do a lot of backpacking, well not a lot, but always do 2-3 trips a year. I plan on taking you guys along with me on some of those as well. Some will include fishing in some remote streams, but others might just be straight backpacking and overnight camping trips as well. Let me know if you would like to see that as well? Yeah, we all are learning daily. The day that I stop learning new things while fishing, is the day I quit fishing. HAHA
Nice carp! Hey it's probably a bad idea to choke up on your rod like that. You want the fulcrum to be down as close to the handle as possible in the "fighting butt". If you choke up into the middle of the rod you could potentially break the rod off just above where your upper hand is.
That was priceless! Your reaction to the feel of carp power on your first fish! I almost choked laughing and trying to swallow a sip of coffee - it was touch and go for a bit , you almost got the literal title of killer videographer. Carp are fun though, almost all I fish for anymore. Love those 20+ pounders, however on a bit more sane 7 wt with a couple hundred yards of 30 lb backing and 12-15 lb tippets. Oh yeah, you might consider a few extra bucks and get a decent drag because this is one fresh water fish capable of sustained runs of high horsepower. Carpe Carpio!
Thanks Mark! Yeah, I was pretty tired. I had just walked probably 5 miles all day, and with only one water bottle. I ate some snacks, but was kinda getting that jitteriness already before I caught him. So by the time I finished that 21 minute battle, I was pretty exhausted. HAHA Also, I need to get in better shape. The next morning my arms felt like jello. HAHA
Ol' rubberlips is one tough hombre.! And that's a nice one. Good job on that fish Angler. And yes. I went with the gloves and neck gaiter this year and now I'll never go out without them.. In addition to sun protection they also reduce your skin exposure to mosquitos. I've not had a skeeter try to drill through the fabric yet.
Nice, yeah we don't get a ton of mosquitoes here, but once per year I fish down in Corpus Christi, and dang! I always come back with 100+ welts! LOL Yeah, carp are tough! I had no idea how fun as well. Im definitely doing this again!
McFly Angler First date with my wife of 42 years was carp fishing in the Allegany River. I got a couple quarts of Kohler beer, and stole an old tire from the gas station on Union street to make a fire, two spinning rigs and a can of corn.......she married me anyway!
I don't know why people don't fish for carp? They put up a really great fight! Yeah they don't look... pleasing but im telling you even small ones fight GREAT!
Hey, great job landing that huge fish for a 5wt rod. I got really excited just watching. You are so lucky you didn't have that rod break. I am happy for you. I didn't realize how big carp are either. I have a good idea how large your hands are from watching all of your video's. That was a big fish on a 5 wt.!! All the best to you and your family. Sean
+SW Angling honestly I try hard not to go to Albuquerque... it's a bit over crowded but id love to learn the fishery. Some time for sure! Thanks for the invite.
Love the video and I think you will find that rod holder on your vest very helpful when standing in the stream or river and changing patterns, tippit or your whole rig.
+Joey Rohrbaugh these are sims headwaters... used to be $250 last year but they raised the price this year to $400... the freestone is now their $250 waders, but they aren't as good. Sims does make the best quality of waders, ones that will last 2-3 times as long as the competition. However if your just starting off, don't spend that kinda money. Go with frog togs or Redington, both of which you can find decent waders at $100 or less. They might need to be replaced sooner, but they won't cost you a fortune when first starting out.
Dude its a blast, you gotta catch one carp at least on the fly! Seriously it will probably become your favorite fish, due to the fight these guys put up! And also they are fun, you gotta stalk them, its like real hunting. So I wasnt actually catching him on the river. There are a few little lakes off to the right when you park at the Munos parking lot. They were in there. During high water they went out to the river, and I think they are there periodically. But they are more concentrated in the lake. Just look for them tailing through the shallows of these 3 lakes. But be careful not to spook them. If you can see them, more than likely they can see you. Try to come up to them from behind, and hide behind a bush or something. Dont approach one when its facing you.
That was pretty sweet! I've caught carp in Texas and they are always a fun fight. Have you ever targeted bass on your fly rod? I recently started after small mouth and it has been a lot of fun as well. Good work!
Yes, actually my next video will be of smallmouth bass, went last week, and the video will be up next Thursday. I actually learned fly fishing on a lake, so bass, crappie, and bluegill. Occasionally trout would hit as well, but mainly targeted largemouth when fishing there. I think some of my favorite fishing is for smallmouth bass, they are always a blast, and fight like little scrappers! HAHA
4x, but I kept getting broke off on them, so I bit down the leader (didn’t have heavier with me) and tied on further down which ended up being like 1x where i tied on. No tippet.
Every Thursday for the past 17 weeks I have uploaded a fishing video... My schedule is the following. Monday - Update/review video (basically me chatting at the camera) Thursday - Fishing/outdoor video (me going fishing, camping, or both) Friday - Fly Tying video's.
HAHA. Yeah, beard fly might come soon. I just have so many idea's, I might need to do 2 flies per week. We shall see... Thanks, and yes fly tying videos are every week. Every Friday. I haven't missed a Friday Fly Tying video in about a year. HAHA
Waouh nice fish, it's remind me the first time when i caught one,it was a big fighting with him.. what a beautifull place where you are man! i like my Ontario but the San Juan rivier looks very peacefull. Nice vidéo again
+Big Lebowski thanks big. See I wish I was in Ontario! Just Canada is too expensive for me. My wife and I did look at land up that way a while back, but just turned out too pricy. It's nice here, and we really love Durango. Hopefully we can get our spot of land soon. We really want to start a homestead... grow chickens, goats, and meat rabbits.
Yeah, we love Durango... In fact, when we moved here my parents came to visit and ended up buying a house to move here as well, from southern California! HAHA I lived in CA for many many years, but personally wanted to leave because I like a bit more freedom. Colorado doesn't require your first born child in order to go camping like CA does. HAHA But yeah, they came out to visit and fell in love with the place as well. Its really pretty here.
Yeah man, you can enter into my contests. I have an FTP on my website where you can upload fish pictures or fly pictures. Every month I am having people vote on who wins.
I think in small ponds they can. I don't really think they can in large bodies of water too much. I have heard a few things like they eat the eggs of the other more desirable fish (bass, trout, etc). But in reality I'm not sure they do enough to make much of a dent in population. Notice I said "some people think of them as trash fish". After catching him, I don't think of them as trash fish anymore. Not sure I would brave eating one though, but for sure a formidable sport fish.
Big fish. I've been fishing for carp over close to 30 years on fly rod. everybody thought I was silly for doing it you're not supposed to catch carp on a fly rod it's not proper well I sure have enjoyed it
No, they are fun! And tough to fish! I went out yesterday for them again and couldn't find a single one that wasn't easily spooked. Like, I was within 50 feet of them (basic casting distance) and they would spook away. HAHA I couldn't creep up on them slow enough. So... Definitely not an easy fish to target. I think I got lucking on this trip, because I might not have an opportunity like this again, any time soon.
Turns out carp are game fish in colorado. In Idaho they are invasive and nuisance fish. Fish and Game once told us to stab them and make them crayfish food. Guess in Colorado it's diff. OK don't stab it, my bad. Been trying to carp fish in the winter and no luck at all.
Ok no worries, I know a Garcia, so I thought maybe... HAHA Anyway, yeah lets do it some time soon. My schedule is weird though. Find me on Facebook, so I have a quicker way of getting ahold of you. Just look up McFly Angler, and I should pop up.
+Rush Voorhis Outdoors dude I've always wanted to fish Montana! Lucky you bro! I plan on the next few years to start fishing around the US, check out popular rivers in all the states. Soon, soon I will be there hopefully! So carp in Montana huh? I think these are my new favorite fish on the fly! Haha
McFly Angler my grandfather use to bottle carp and suckers as a kid me and the cousins would eat that up I've had it smoked and deep fried and I thought it tasted like catfish
Ohhh, yeah thats too much effort. HAHA I just leave the gaiter in my bag, and whala! HAHA Either way, I still hate sun screen, its greasy, smelly, and gives me zits...
been fly fishing for carp since 2004. patience is a virtue when fighting a carp.
+William Henry lol yeah I hear ya.
What patterns attract carp? I've never snagged a big carp on a fly...Carp seem utterly indifferent to streamers & nymphs...Special technique?
who wants a carp fight to be short?
Nice! Enjoyed watching the adventure. Congrats on the carp.
Thank you! :)
great job man, awesome to see a New Mexico fishing channel with so much success, keep up the great work!
+SW Angling thank you
Probably my favorite video so far, great job and keep them coming!!!
Thanks David! Yeah, I like it as well. It was fun to film, and honestly pretty fun to do the video editing for it. I had fun with that dub step music. I usually use more folky music, but for some reason this fish fight was calling for something a bit more up beat! HAHA

Yeah, we all are learning daily. The day that I stop learning new things while fishing, is the day I quit fishing. HAHA
Something similar I have also experienced last year. 12 pounds of carp on a # 4 rod and flying cord. That's hard. good work
wow, thats a lot of carp for a 4wt... HAHA
Nice carp! Hey it's probably a bad idea to choke up on your rod like that. You want the fulcrum to be down as close to the handle as possible in the "fighting butt". If you choke up into the middle of the rod you could potentially break the rod off just above where your upper hand is.
thank you for the reccomendation

Lol yeah carp are fun for sure!
Yep, welcome to the addiction. I have been fishing carp AND barbel, it REALLY is a rush. Poormans bonefish for sure! Very powerful fish. :-) :-) :-)
Yes, I have caught a few since. Very fun fish!
"I got to sit down"... ha ha ha nice fish pal!!
LOL Nice! Sounds like a keeper! Don't throw her back... ;)
Lovely content! Keep it up!
Thanks MisterBB
I don't know why people don't fish for carp? They put up a really great fight! Yeah they don't look... pleasing but im telling you even small ones fight GREAT!
Yes I agree!
McFly Angler i wish i could show you mine. I've made some pretty cool looking flies! You are like my icon!
Oh thanks man! Not sure if I deserve to be an Icon, lol But thank you.
McFly Angler your a cool guy! xD
Ahh thats ok man i understand
Nice video!!
Thank you!
Really cool video. I'm sure your carp can get a lot bigger than that. Even here in gloomy England many lakes have 30lb carp in them.
Yes they do get bigger... lol
Sean
+Sean Mooney thanks Sean! Yeah it was much larger than I thought! Haha
Also do you ever fly fish the ditches in Albuquerque for carp? its a great fishery and I'd be happy to show you around if you want.
+SW Angling honestly I try hard not to go to Albuquerque... it's a bit over crowded but id love to learn the fishery. Some time for sure! Thanks for the invite.
Love the video and I think you will find that rod holder on your vest very helpful when standing in the stream or river and changing patterns, tippit or your whole rig.
yeah, its been helpful for sure! Thanks! :)
I've never seen anyone use the rod holder option while walking. It's normally for posing for a pic while holding your catch. Keep the vids coming!
HAHA yeah, I guess thats true.
Nice video bud! I have a question, what kind of waders do you have? Im new to fly fishing and would like to know what kind would be good for beginners
+Joey Rohrbaugh these are sims headwaters... used to be $250 last year but they raised the price this year to $400... the freestone is now their $250 waders, but they aren't as good. Sims does make the best quality of waders, ones that will last 2-3 times as long as the competition. However if your just starting off, don't spend that kinda money. great video, carp fishing is now on my bucket list. What part of the San Juan were you fishing?

Welcome to the addiction man. It's a rush lol. Come on over and check a few of my carp videos out. Nice work
will do, thanks
That was pretty sweet! I've caught carp in Texas and they are always a fun fight. Have you ever targeted bass on your fly rod? I recently started after small mouth and it has been a lot of fun as well. Good work!

That's a healthy fish. Congratulations.
thanks
Wow - that was a TOAD! I gotta give this a try sometime this year...
Yes you do, carp fishing is a blast!
I’ve never fly fished but I want to get into it strictly for carp fishing. What were you using for leader and tippet?
4x, but I kept getting broke off on them, so I bit down the leader (didn’t have heavier with me) and tied on further down which ended up being like 1x where i tied on. No tippet.
McFly Angler
Awesome, thanks. I’m not sure if tippet is even necessary. Can’t you just use a fluorocarbon leader in different lb. test?
Yeah, but I find that flouro leaders are pricy, so I go nylon for leader and top it off with flouro... usually....
great vid Kudos
Thanks
Nice buddy!
Thanks
What a whale !! Carp swims off ... fisherman sits down , they are some hard fighting and hearty fish
Thanks, yeah that was exhausting especially since I was outgunned on a 5wt! Lol
Carp net that extends might work , The British fish carp competitively. Great job in your carp workout!!
HAHA thanks! yeah, I need a bigger net, and I got one already. It will be on my next unboxing video.
not even Friday and I get a video like this... is it Christmas?
Every Thursday for the past 17 weeks I have uploaded a fishing video... My schedule is the following.
Monday - Update/review video (basically me chatting at the camera)
Thursday - Fishing/outdoor video (me going fishing, camping, or both)
Friday - Fly Tying video's.
McFly Angler ah ok I always love your fly tying vids but I thought that was it every week, (I still like your idea of a beard hair ginger fly!)

I love your videos and flies! If only there was some way i could show you mine?...
Yeah man, you can enter into my contests. I have an FTP on my website where you can upload fish pictures or fly pictures. Every month I am having people vote on who wins.
Nice Fish ^^
+Miles Nasenbär thank you
I really likes the tropico five music
Thanks! :) HAHA
Ah the joys of being ginger in the sun!
Yes, and I got melanoma at the age of 34. Sucks! Lol. Luckily they caught it early. I’m still alive.
Carp are great fighters on a 5wt! Hardly a trash fish imo. Do they really damage the ecosystem as i have heard??
I think in small ponds they can. I don't really think they can in large bodies of water too much. I have heard a few things like they eat the eggs of the other more desirable fish (bass, trout, etc). But in reality I'm not sure they do enough to make much of a dent in population. Notice I said "some people think of them as trash fish". After catching him, I don't think of them as trash fish anymore. Not sure I would brave eating one though, but for sure a formidable sport fish.
Thats why im Carp Angler ^^
+Miles Nasenbär it’s a nice thing isn’t it!? They are a powerful fish for sure!
Do a challenge with the crystal river $10 combo for carp
+Crankbait TV I'll look into it. Lol it would have to be a heavier rod than a 5wt. Barely did it with this rod and it's a high quality blank.
Holy mother of God!!!!
Lol
Big fish. I've been fishing for carp over close to 30 years on fly rod. everybody thought I was silly for doing it you're not supposed to catch carp on a fly rod it's not proper well I sure have enjoyed it
Thanks man, yeah they are fun for sure! It’s becoming more popular now for sure, people are starting to realize just how fun they are!
To stop the carp run, put your rod tip down. Carp don't like being pulled down.
Oh thanks for the recommendation. I will try that.
your right dont like there noses being pulled to the bottom, watch out when you raise the rod though.
carp are no joke... they are pretty much steamrollers
Lol no worries man
Hey man let's go hit the dream stream some time!
I'm down...
Let me know when! I'm in the San Luis valley, conejos is also just out my back door!
Cool, are you perhaps related to a Brent?
I can't say I am brother
Ok no worries, I know a Garcia, so I thought maybe... HAHA Anyway, yeah lets do it some time soon. My schedule is weird though. Find me on Facebook, so I have a quicker way of getting ahold of you. Just look up McFly Angler, and I should pop up.
hey man, just found your channel!! dropped a like and a sub!! we do a bunch of carp fishing on the fly in Montana!!!
Haha
they're also good smoked
Yeah? I am not sure I can keep them there, but I will look into that where I can keep them. Im willing to try it.
McFly Angler my grandfather use to bottle carp and suckers
as a kid me and the cousins would eat that up
I've had it smoked and deep fried and I thought it tasted like catfish
Nice!
McFly Angler great carp brotha
have a great weekend
You too man!
Do you have a gmail account? I would like to send you some pictures of my flies
I don’t give personal info over the Internet... you can upload to my website ftp though
and use rubber gloves
+Troutaholic flo for?
putting lotion on your nose so when you touch your fly line it won`t hurt the line
Silly!!!!!
Ohhh, yeah thats too much effort. HAHA I just leave the gaiter in my bag, and whala! HAHA Either way, I still hate sun screen, its greasy, smelly, and gives me zits...
Awesome video! I enjoyed it.
+Darius Agollari thanks! Glad you liked it
