      What patterns attract carp? I've never snagged a big carp on a fly...Carp seem utterly indifferent to streamers & nymphs...Special technique?

      Thanks David! Yeah, I like it as well. It was fun to film, and honestly pretty fun to do the video editing for it. I had fun with that dub step music. I usually use more folky music, but for some reason this fish fight was calling for something a bit more up beat! HAHA

    Enjoy your videos. They are getting better and better. Keep up the good work! I like that we can follow you around your environment and watch you learn by trial and error. Someday I would like to fish the San Juan too.

      Thank you Robert! Its a fun place! I plan soon to explore around a bit though. I do a lot of backpacking, well not a lot, but always do 2-3 trips a year. I plan on taking you guys along with me on some of those as well. Some will include fishing in some remote streams, but others might just be straight backpacking and overnight camping trips as well. Let me know if you would like to see that as well?
      Yeah, we all are learning daily. The day that I stop learning new things while fishing, is the day I quit fishing. HAHA

    Something similar I have also experienced last year. 12 pounds of carp on a # 4 rod and flying cord. That's hard. good work

      wow, thats a lot of carp for a 4wt... HAHA

    Nice carp! Hey it's probably a bad idea to choke up on your rod like that. You want the fulcrum to be down as close to the handle as possible in the "fighting butt". If you choke up into the middle of the rod you could potentially break the rod off just above where your upper hand is.

    That was priceless! Your reaction to the feel of carp power on your first fish! I almost choked laughing and trying to swallow a sip of coffee - it was touch and go for a bit , you almost got the literal title of killer videographer. Carp are fun though, almost all I fish for anymore. Love those 20+ pounders, however on a bit more sane 7 wt with a couple hundred yards of 30 lb backing and 12-15 lb tippets. Oh yeah, you might consider a few extra bucks and get a decent drag because this is one fresh water fish capable of sustained runs of high horsepower. Carpe Carpio!

      Thanks Mark! Yeah, I was pretty tired. I had just walked probably 5 miles all day, and with only one water bottle. I ate some snacks, but was kinda getting that jitteriness already before I caught him. So by the time I finished that 21 minute battle, I was pretty exhausted. HAHA Also, I need to get in better shape. The next morning my arms felt like jello. HAHA

    Ol' rubberlips is one tough hombre.! And that's a nice one. Good job on that fish Angler. And yes. I went with the gloves and neck gaiter this year and now I'll never go out without them.. In addition to sun protection they also reduce your skin exposure to mosquitos. I've not had a skeeter try to drill through the fabric yet.

    • @McFlyAngler

      Nice, yeah we don't get a ton of mosquitoes here, but once per year I fish down in Corpus Christi, and dang! I always come back with 100+ welts! LOL
      Yeah, carp are tough! I had no idea how fun as well. Im definitely doing this again!

      McFly Angler First date with my wife of 42 years was carp fishing in the Allegany River. I got a couple quarts of Kohler beer, and stole an old tire from the gas station on Union street to make a fire, two spinning rigs and a can of corn.......she married me anyway!

    Hey, great job landing that huge fish for a 5wt rod. I got really excited just watching. You are so lucky you didn't have that rod break. I am happy for you. I didn't realize how big carp are either. I have a good idea how large your hands are from watching all of your video's. That was a big fish on a 5 wt.!! All the best to you and your family. Sean

    Nice video bud! I have a question, what kind of waders do you have? Im new to fly fishing and would like to know what kind would be good for beginners

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому

      +Joey Rohrbaugh these are sims headwaters... used to be $250 last year but they raised the price this year to $400... the freestone is now their $250 waders, but they aren't as good. Sims does make the best quality of waders, ones that will last 2-3 times as long as the competition. However if your just starting off, don't spend that kinda money. Go with frog togs or Redington, both of which you can find decent waders at $100 or less. They might need to be replaced sooner, but they won't cost you a fortune when first starting out.

    great video, carp fishing is now on my bucket list. What part of the San Juan were you fishing?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 років тому

      Dude its a blast, you gotta catch one carp at least on the fly! Seriously it will probably become your favorite fish, due to the fight these guys put up! And also they are fun, you gotta stalk them, its like real hunting.
      So I wasnt actually catching him on the river. There are a few little lakes off to the right when you park at the Munos parking lot. They were in there. During high water they went out to the river, and I think they are there periodically. But they are more concentrated in the lake. Just look for them tailing through the shallows of these 3 lakes. But be careful not to spook them. If you can see them, more than likely they can see you. Try to come up to them from behind, and hide behind a bush or something. Dont approach one when its facing you.

    That was pretty sweet! I've caught carp in Texas and they are always a fun fight. Have you ever targeted bass on your fly rod? I recently started after small mouth and it has been a lot of fun as well. Good work!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому +3

      Yes, actually my next video will be of smallmouth bass, went last week, and the video will be up next Thursday. I actually learned fly fishing on a lake, so bass, crappie, and bluegill. Occasionally trout would hit as well, but mainly targeted largemouth when fishing there. I think some of my favorite fishing is for smallmouth bass, they are always a blast, and fight like little scrappers! HAHA

    I’ve never fly fished but I want to get into it strictly for carp fishing. What were you using for leader and tippet?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 років тому

      4x, but I kept getting broke off on them, so I bit down the leader (didn’t have heavier with me) and tied on further down which ended up being like 1x where i tied on. No tippet.

    • @drested1793
      @drested1793 5 років тому

      McFly Angler
      Awesome, thanks. I’m not sure if tippet is even necessary. Can’t you just use a fluorocarbon leader in different lb. test?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 років тому

      Yeah, but I find that flouro leaders are pricy, so I go nylon for leader and top it off with flouro... usually....

      Yeah, we love Durango... In fact, when we moved here my parents came to visit and ended up buying a house to move here as well, from southern California! HAHA I lived in CA for many many years, but personally wanted to leave because I like a bit more freedom. Colorado doesn't require your first born child in order to go camping like CA does. HAHA But yeah, they came out to visit and fell in love with the place as well. Its really pretty here.

    Carp are great fighters on a 5wt! Hardly a trash fish imo. Do they really damage the ecosystem as i have heard??

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому +1

      I think in small ponds they can. I don't really think they can in large bodies of water too much. I have heard a few things like they eat the eggs of the other more desirable fish (bass, trout, etc). But in reality I'm not sure they do enough to make much of a dent in population. Notice I said "some people think of them as trash fish". After catching him, I don't think of them as trash fish anymore. Not sure I would brave eating one though, but for sure a formidable sport fish.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому +1

      No, they are fun! And tough to fish! I went out yesterday for them again and couldn't find a single one that wasn't easily spooked. Like, I was within 50 feet of them (basic casting distance) and they would spook away. HAHA I couldn't creep up on them slow enough. So... Definitely not an easy fish to target. I think I got lucking on this trip, because I might not have an opportunity like this again, any time soon.

    Turns out carp are game fish in colorado. In Idaho they are invasive and nuisance fish. Fish and Game once told us to stab them and make them crayfish food. Guess in Colorado it's diff. OK don't stab it, my bad. Been trying to carp fish in the winter and no luck at all.
