I wish I could afford all these woodland scenic materials. In order to make something like this it would cost me a small fortune. Instead, I make all my scenes from stuff I find around the house or in the backyard.
I am new at this hobby. I thought my Christmas Village was decent until I saw this piece. I see that I have a long way to go. Thanks for the inspirations!
As I get closer to retirement. I am finding myself wanting to take my little Christmas Village out and play with it all season long. This looks like fun. Thanks for posting............... Merry Christmas
I've seen some neat ideas for Christmas villages! One guy for snow used a white textured plastic shower wall board for the bottom and it looked pretty good!
That's the beauty of doing it this way. Your paper wads don't have to look like hers. Once you cover them with Plaster Cloth, you will have great terrain, no matter what they looked like! Just make your wads your way. Make your pile higher if you want steeper terrain or, flatten them out for lower hills, etc. Just do it! You will be thrilled with the results! Happy Modeling1
This is just awesome! As someone else mentioned previously, I'm a "visual" learner and this video is incredible with just the right speed and detailed "how to"information. One question, how in the heck did that lovely woman do all of that without getting anything on her white pants! She's a lot braver than I! ;)
I watched many videos before I started making the base for my Christmas village. This is the video that I saved to go back to, while I am working on it, as it is so informative. Thank you!
"Wet water" is a modeling term for water mixed with a few drops of liquid dish soap, and is sometimes used to break surface tension when painting plastic, metal and other objects in order to keep paint from beading up and getting it to stick. It does seem like a funny term! :-)
Dear Woodland Scenics, I REALLY, REALLY wish you would have this wonderful young lady do more "how to" videos; maybe for a Halloween and Christmas display?? This video was wonderfully done- very easy to understand and follow (relatively :-) ). I love how she did a complete project, and I love that it was directed at a different genre (Villages, I guess you would say) than all your other railroad-related videos. I have a 4'x8' Christmas Village (with simple train); I bought multiple WS products to help create it- all because of this video. PLEASE do a few more women-involved/ directed videos (aka village, miniature type full projects)!!!! Thank you, Teresa
+50tmack Hello Teresa. We have received hundreds of comments and emails about this video, and what a great job she did. She is no longer with the Company, but everything she teaches in her video can be applied to any project, any size, any shape terrain. The techniques are the same, whether you are applying them to a Christmas Village, a model railroad, gaming board or any other project or display. I am very glad this video inspired you to create your village, and was additionally helpful to your modeling efforts! Happy Future Modeling and thanks for commenting!
I realize her techniques- and the products- are applicable to many applications, I just SO enjoyed watching her (or again, someone else next time is great) make this little village. I'm sure your 'people' would have so many creative ideas for Villages they could share with us!!! Thanks again!
@@ModelSceneryExpert Yes she was a gem! A great example on how ALLLLLLL videos should be done. Start to finish. I'd love to see her clean up process too! HAH! How lucky you were to have her as long as you did. BONUS!
WOW! I am blown away by this video. I collected quite a few pieces of the Dept 56 North Pole Village, but it has been 10 years since I displayed any because I just wasn't happy with setting them out flat in a row and didn't know how to do anything else. You have really inspired me. I know you made it look easier than it would be for me, since I am not handy or very creative, but, I do think that if I take it slow, by next Christmas I might be able to create at least a small scene that would allow me to display a few of my pieces. I am sure I will return to this video many times. Thank you very much!
gayla gavin Hello Gayla, We are delighted this video has inspired you. The best part is that when you begin your project, you find just how easy it is and just how handy and creative you really are! Beautiful I love it Thank you lovely job never seen nothing like it and belive me I seen about 200 video and your is the num 1 you're a beautiful lady love your haircut
What a very fine, and highly detailed presentation! Claudia Parrish is a master of scenic displays. I would never be able to do this kind of stuff, only because I've never had the know-how, or the patience for it. I have an old friend (Aron) who works for Woodland Scenics who is from Elgin, Illinois. I have seen your product line at Walt's Hobby Shop in Crest Hill, Illinois. Everything you manufacture (even the buildings) is done with the highest quality! Very impressive!
This is fantastic. I will be purchasing to make the setting for my mother's Christmas village display. Thanks for all the great info and the tutorial here!
This was really good! The only thing i'd change with the time now is put in an LED bulb, it's more efficient and doesn't have as much of a risk of a fire so you can keep it on a long time and not have to worry about it.
Although complex and labor intensive, this video is so well-done that I think anyone can follow her directions. My husband has an extensive lighthouse collection, so we are going to try to adapt this project to his collection.
Glad you liked the video, and that it inspired you to build a display for the lighthouses. Here is a link for a lighthouse/dollhouse project that someone set us...take a look. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/successStory/109 Her lighthouse/dollhouse may be larger than your structures, however, she was very surprised at how easy it was. You will have a blast making this! Have fun and Happy Modeling!

To clarify, the stream should be Realistic Water. Use Water Effects to model moving water - waterfalls, icicles, etc. Make sure to spread the plaster bumps with wet fingers to fill in all the holes in the Plaster Cloth. Then, add color and depth to the stream with Earth Colors Liquid Pigments. This should be enough to seal the streambed. If there is concern about seepage, apply a thin layer of Lightweight Hydrocal to the streambed to seal it further before coloring with pigment.
This is fantastic, thank you! I am planning on building a large display showing all four seasons and want to leave it up permanently. What suggestions do you have for protecting it from dust, damage, etc?
What a wonderful video, thank you for taking me step by step. I now feel I can do this, which I've always thought I had to buy it already made, thank you!

I really enjoyed your vedio and was so informative. most of the vedios I have seen was not a detailed as this one. I model railroad and was looking for something like this to help with making my scenery. Thank you for posting this vedio.
This video covers just about everything I needed to learn (because I'm a visual learner & the how-tos included with the kits do not tell me how long to wait for drying). I'm using some Woodland Scenics products for an art final project.
Hello! We are so glad this video is helpful to you! About drying time. Plaster Cloth usually dries enough to paint and scenic overnight, or approximately 8 hours. This is an average and will vary according to environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity. You can put a fan and/or dehumidifier in the room to circulate air and reduce humidity if necessary to help with drying time. Hope this helps, and Happy Modeling!
knuxiefan1994 We would LOVE to see some photos of your project. You can send them to marketing@woodlandscenics.com. Just let me know you are the UA-cam watcher of and commenter on the collectible house video. Thanks!
I really love this video! She has such a pleasant voice and sounds like the most patient person in the world. She explains things so well too. I still have a couple of questions though. 1. When she planned this out, did she really only use the books? It seems that with rock placement and the street and the river/creek thing that this had to have been drawn out in some way. How do you do that? 2. How sturdy is this? I'm not a creative person and can't think of things on my own and like others, I'm a visual learner so I need to see how it's done. I can't wait to try this and I really hope I can make mine as adorable as hers. Again, many thanks!
+magnoliasouth The overall display is about 30" x 24", but you can make a display as large, or as small you would like. Claudia started out with three 1/2" Foam Sheets as the base and then used scraps from additional sheets to extend the left front section and to make the support pillars and the raised platforms. The Foam Sheets sold by Woodland Scenics are each 12" x 24" x 1/2” (ST1423). Any kind of foam can be used when working with Plaster Cloth but only cut Woodland Scenics foam with the Hot Wire Foam Cutter (ST1435) as other types of foams can emit toxic fumes. Hope this is helpful!
+magnoliasouth Yes! She did just use books. One trick that we sometimes use is to arrange the paper wads and then lay a sheet of unwadded newspaper or paper towels over the top of all the placed paper wads. Then use a spray bottle to lightly wet the sheet of newspaper or paper towels. It will relax into the wads and give you a basic idea of what it will look like when the Plaster Cloth is applied. Keep in mind that the Plaster Cloth will be a bit heavier but starting this way may help you see how the terrain is emerging and allow you to work with several options before you begin applying the Plaster Cloth. Plaster Cloth should be applied in 2 layers (as recommended). Completely cover the foam structures and wrap the Plaster Cloth around the edges of the diorama on all sides. Once it dries completely, you will have a very sturdy hard terrain shell. Once you begin your project, you'll find out just how easy it is and just how creative you really are! Have fun and enjoy yourself!
I have to say, so far so good!! I finally have a good idea of how to do my entire village just from copying the design in this video. When you do the stream with the water effects, it won't seep through the plaster cloth and foam without some kind of sealant?
Amazing video, it sure did help me understand a little on what I will have to do to make my first dioramas.. it's just I'm still having trouble understanding what it is I will all need.
This was a great tutorial and has helped me figure out a lot about planning my village! But what if you don't want the lights to permanently stay on or in the display? I have A LOT of Halloween Village houses so my display is very big and I just don't think putting the lights in there like that would work.
"Wet water" is a modeling term for water mixed with a few drops of liquid dish soap. It is sometimes used to break surface tension when painting plastic, metal and other objects in order to keep paint from beading up and getting it to stick.
I work mostly in 1:144th scale and some 1:48 and 1:12. I have asthma, so I love using the Realistic Water and Special Effects, especially since they don't emit fumes like resin does so they do not affect my breathing. But for some reason I cannot use the Scenic Cement -- I love the results when I used it in a project -- but I have an allergic reaction to it (which includes very itchy eyes just from being around it ... and anywhere on my skin that the cement may touch I have fierce itching) ... I wonder what I am reacting to???
This is exactly the video I have been looking for. Thank you for going to such great detail. As an absolute beginner it is really helpful. Where do you get your cute streetlights and houses?
Glad this video will be helpful to you when creating your display. We do not manufacture the streetlights and houses. You can find them wherever collectible houses such as Department 56 and Disney are sold. Google collectible houses and I'm sure you will find loads of places to purchase these items...local and online. Happy Modeling!
I’m thinking through a project that will need to be taller than what is demonstrated here. How high can I make my platforms to hold lighted buildings using styrofoam legs? I believe the tallest ones shown here are 5.5”.
This video is just a starting point. The height you make your model is up to you. The taller you go, the more support you need. Use thicker pieces of foam for the supports for a taller model. We recommend using 1” or 2” Foam Sheets cut into the size supports that you need. If your display will be very tall, consider using cross braces to ensure the vertical pieces stay in place. Remember to also consider the weight that they will bear. If the houses on top of the model will be very heavy, you will want to use thicker foam. If you intend to have a flat back on your model, use Profile Boards. What is cool about Profile Boards is that they are ribbed, so you could insert foam cross braces into the slots on the Profile Board for additional support. They will also provide support for your display’s upper tier.
I have a hot wire cutter. It smokes as I cut the foam board and the fumes are horrible. I didn't notice any smoke when you cut yours. I used insulation foam board as was instructed in a different video. The foam board you used is white. I assume that is the difference. Where do I find the same foam board you used? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated !!
Hello there! Thank you for your question! We offer a variety of different foam products in our SubTerrain Lightweight Layout System. Our tools, including the Hot Wire Foam Cutter, are specifically designed to work with this system. Here is a link! woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/SubTerrainSystem. Thank you for your interest in our products!
How long did this entire process take? and approximately how much would something like this cost, in general, to create? Whether it was filmed in 2012 or not, this is a relevant AWESOME video! What a FABULOUS TEACHER you are!!!!!! Thank you for such clean, clear, articulate instructions! I am not as daunted by the process now. YOURE A GEM!! Thanks! Make some more videos :) Blessings to you from the great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood, Washington! (think south of Seattle, but BETTER! )
We're sorry, but we do not know for sure. We also do not have a cost estimate. However, the products are easy to work with and times will vary depending on many factors.
WOW!! This is really amazing!! I wish I was that talented.. :( It looks like a lot of work, a lot of patience, and a lot of MONEY were put into this project; I lost count of how many things you need to buy to come up with this beauty. A "product list" that specifies everything she used should be included under this video's description, just in case somebody wants to try to replicate it... Just saying! :)
Sol Costa Thank you. The list of products used in the video has the following for the trees. The Clump Foliage is not a natural product but it sure does look real! Clump Foliage product numbers (FC181-FC186, FC682-FC684) Obrigado. A lista de produtos usados no vídeo tem o seguinte para as árvores. A Moita Folha não é um produto natural, mas com certeza se parece real! Clump Foliage números de produtos (FC181-FC186, FC682-FC684)
Hello! At the time this video was created, we only carried Plaster Cloth in rolls. We do not have the exact amount that was used, but if you were to use the Plaster Cloth Roll (C1203 that is 8 in wide x 5 yd long) we estimate three rolls of Plaster Cloth would be needed for this project. Happy modeling and happy new year!
Hello James, Thank you for your interest in our products. The Risers that were used in this video are ½” Risers. The ½” Risers (ST1406) measures 1/2 in x 2 1/2 in x 24 in. We offer the ½” Risers in packs of 4, or in bulk packs of 16. If you have any other questions feel free to contact us. Thank you again and happy modeling
+Lymari Lopez Probably, about 30" x 24", but you can make a display as large, or as small you would like. The video is meant only as a guide on how to use the products. Hope this is helpful, and Happy Modeling if you decide to make it!
Some people who have dry skin may prefer to wear gloves as plaster can cause skin dryness. Wearing gloves is optional and not required. Woodland plasters will not hurt your hands as long as you use good hygiene. After working with plaster, wash your hands. If desired, use a little hand lotion to restore moisture to your skin.
+Lymari Lopez - Hello Lymari, This video was made almost 20 years ago, so we do not know exactly how large of display this is. Our modelers in Product Development looked at the video, and said it looked like Claudia started out with three 1/2" Foam Sheets as the base and then used scraps from additional sheets to extend the left front section and to make the support pillars and the raised platforms. The Foam Sheets sold by Woodland Scenics are each 12" x 24" x 1/2", but you can use any kind of foam when working with Plaster Cloth. Hope this is helpful!

The overall display is
about 30" x 24", but you can make a display as large, or as small you
would like. Claudia started out with three 1/2" Foam Sheets as the base
and then used scraps from additional sheets to extend the left front section
and to make the support pillars and the raised platforms. The Foam Sheets sold
by Woodland Scenics are each 12" x 24" x 1/2” (ST1423). Any kind of
foam can be used when working with Plaster Cloth but only cut Woodland Scenics
foam with the Hot Wire Foam Cutter (ST1435) as other types of foams can emit
toxic fumes. Hope this is helpful!

Yes! She did just use
books. One trick that we sometimes use is to arrange the paper wads and then
lay a sheet of unwadded newspaper or paper towels over the top of all the
placed paper wads. Then use a spray bottle to lightly wet the sheet of
newspaper or paper towels. It will relax into the wads and give you a basic
idea of what it will look like when the Plaster Cloth is applied. Keep in mind
that the Plaster Cloth will be a bit heavier but starting this way may help you
see how the terrain is emerging and allow you to work with several options
before you begin applying the Plaster Cloth.
Plaster Cloth should be
applied in 2 layers (as recommended). Completely cover the foam structures and
wrap the Plaster Cloth around the edges of the diorama on all sides. Once it
dries completely, you will have a very sturdy hard terrain shell.
Once you begin your
project, you'll find out just how easy it is and just how creative you really
are! Have fun and enjoy yourself!
I have to say, so far so good!! I finally have a good idea of how to do my entire village just from copying the design in this video. When you do the stream with the water effects, it won't seep through the plaster cloth and foam without some kind of sealant?
She makes it look so easy! Even my paper wads aren't coming out the same way :( But I will keep working! Thanks!
Beautiful. You should sell them.
I bet this one would rock if reshot in high definition.
Amazing video, it sure did help me understand a little on what I will have to do to make my first dioramas.. it's just I'm still having trouble understanding what it is I will all need.
We have a playlist on our website for starting a layout. Check it out here: woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/video/c/startingalayout
Awesome! I'm going to make a warhammer 40k battlefield form these materials
Good job! We play with wooden trains.
FANTASTICO!! Ciao!
Job well done!
This was a great tutorial and has helped me figure out a lot about planning my village! But what if you don't want the lights to permanently stay on or in the display? I have A LOT of Halloween Village houses so my display is very big and I just don't think putting the lights in there like that would work.
awesome, thank you
This lady is hardcore O_o
haha I thought the same thing
".....Spray a rock mold with a mixture wet water...." As a pose to dry water?? LOL Thanks for sharing!
Excellent!
WOW! So water is wet!
Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing what part of the Scenic Cement is causing your reaction. We are sorry that you're allergic to it, though.
Magnifique , merci merci
got this video at last if I am ever mad in the head will try some thing like it how many days did it take.
Hello Andrew! For a novice modeler, this size project can be done over a weekend. So plan a weekend, get mad in the head and get started! :-)
will try if I can find a weekend.
Мне очень понравился Ваш мастер класс.Спасибо!
Totally awesome!
well done
EStou encantada com seu trabalho, muito lindo, eu gostaria de saber o que você colocou colado na árvore, seria arbusto natural? Parabéns!
Sol Costa

how much plaster cloth did you use for this display and how much comes in the package?
Happy modeling and happy new year!
thank you for the information. I hope you do more videos on christmas villages
Also what size riser is she using for the road? 1/2" 1"
Hello James,
Thank you for your interest in our products.
Also.. Do you happen to know the approx. dimensions of this display? Thanks again! :)
+Lymari Lopez Probably, about 30" x 24", but you can make a display as large, or as small you would like. The video is meant only as a guide on how to use the products. Hope this is helpful, and Happy Modeling if you decide to make it!
Oh how nice. But not available in Holland.
I love how she made it but here we do not have all that
You can purchase Woodland Scenics products online. We do ship to Holland! woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/
I love how you didn't put latex gloves on to do plaster ..
Hi! How many foam sheets of each size do I need if I want to replicate this project? Thanks!
+Woodland Scenics Wow! I never would have guessed this was a 20-year-old recording. It's so well done and so clear. Great work digitizing that.
Bravo!
Браво!!!
p.s. I would be equally tickled with a man doing a village project ;-)

Greetings! These are Department 56 buildings.

How much do you charge to make for anybody?
This is not a service that is offered. We can explain the process further for you in tandem with the video's instruction, if desired.
