With the comeback "Why Not" last year, the "Star" MV was a surprise (having 2 MV's from the same album)! It was a song for the International Orbits (fandom). Here is the US, it received a lot of attention, even playing it on local radio stations. Now, with the release of their Japan debut coming up - Loona is definitely shooting for that world-wide audience!
Everything in Loona vids tie together, down to shoes and clothing, colors, etc. Everything is there for a reason. And the main reason is to drive orbits crazy. For instance, the giant red-tinged ring around the main stage set is very significant, but it could relate to any number of past times it’s been referenced in multiple music videos. The lore is so crazy lol. It may look disconnected to the you and the average viewer and just make for wild and captivating visuals, but if you watched their solo and subunit videos and teasers, it all fits a motif that relates to a story line. It’s really well done, but to the outside viewer just looks like a trippy fever dream
i seriously doubt it is the case for these mvs. the reason why loona's mvs seem to be able to tie everything together is because of the team behind it (Jaden, Digipedi, BBC) deliberately tying them together. and 2 of them didnt participate for the star mv while not even 1 was in for the Not Friends mv. quoting what ryan jhun said, he tried to incorporate loona's lore into the mv. what i get from it is that he implied that the mv isnt completely about loona's lore, but more that there are elements of it incorprated to a whole different storyline being the Not Friends storyline.
Okay, let's not blow this out of proportion. Not _everything_ in a Loona video is tied to the lore. Yes, there can be a lot of lore packed into a video, especially title tracks, but not every stitch of clothing or set prop is meant to be a link to the lore. Sometimes a potted plant is just a potted plant, if you get my drift. As for the sets, I'm wondering if they might be a reference to the 4 seasons. The wooden set is autumn, the red set with all the lights is summer, the indoor set with the couch is winter and the set with all the vibrantly colored strings is spring? I don't know, I'm just spit balling here. As for the why not sets, they had so many disconnected sets because each member had their own set. The song / MV was about individuality, so each member had an individual set. You'll notice that, with maybe one or two exceptions, no other member was ever filmed in another member's set.
Star and Voice are something else, can't choose which i prefer. I love the first half of the chorus better in english (Starlight, Starlight) and the second half better in the korean version (Moksori neoui moksori). It's actually pretty impressive, more often than not english versions of K-Pop songs end up feeling a bit lackluster in comparison to the original. Star however stands on it's own easily. It is so well produced, with phonetically cohesive lyrics, plus they slayed the english pronunciations and inflections. Also have to agree about Not Friends. I mean i love it for what it is, but the video is basically just screaming "look at these beautiful women being badass with guns!" The usual creative touch and quality camerawork we are used to from LOONA MV's seems to be missing a bit. Which is unsurprising i guess given that it is a different producer.

Omg when you did those adlibs in the chorus it was so satisfying to hear:) About Not Friends I'm addicted to it I love the song and the mv is so cool too Its a "sub unit" means it's sung by some of the members, in this case 4. I stan Loona 💥
Speaking as an Orbit... I feel the same about the Not Friends video. It's all those little things that hold it back from being great. We get a lot of cool scenes and cool little references to the lore (and goodness these four look so good, Kim Lip fixing to kill me), but it's not coherent and some of those cool scenes are held back by the weird lighting. Given the production timeline I get why it ended up that way, it's just too bad they didn't have a little more time to plan and polish.
I like the ‘Not Friends’ MV but I also agree with the things you say about the MV. It’s to dark most of the time, i didn’t see heejin actually shooting someone, the fighting scene where Yves and Kim lip trade places..
I’ve been involved in more than 4 films, mostly as an Editor, but 3 of the 4 I directed myself can be found here: sarahkwork.com/directing (there’s more editing work on my website as well if you’re interested in that). Don’t judge too hard though 😅 I’m not a very good writer and obviously didn’t have the budget, nor the skill or experience of anyone working on these MVs. (Can you tell I’m insecure about my work 😭)
I see what you mean about the "Not Friends" mv not making sense and looking kinda messy. I wonder not knowing anything about the mv making progress if it has anything to do with the fact that the shot the mv 3 days before it's release and the had so little time to edit and put it together. But then again I don't think they were going for a high budget clean mv because that;s just a side project that was produced completely from Ryan Jhun as part of his personal project that he does with various artists (prior to LOONA he had a song with 2 NCT members)
That could certainly be a reason! Though if that’s the case I feel like they went for a pretty big scale concept 🤔 I’m sure there would’ve been concepts that could’ve been pulled of within that time frame. Though I have to say, for only 3 days from shoot to release this is actually really good. It doesn’t make much sense, sure, but the technical things are not too bad for such a rushed project. Props to the filmmakers in that case!
@@reaKtpop I mean the mv has many elements that tie it into the LOONAverse so manybe it was a tall task to make the mv with such a limited budged feel like it's part of the LOONA universe along their other mvs. But at least most fans got the references but I get that for a not such a big fan or someone who doesn't follow the stoyline it would feel disconnected as many have said about most of LOONA's mvs just because each girl has her own stoyrline that even tho it ties all together it might be hard to make it coherent and make sense in a 3 min video. As for the technical things I agree that even for a small budget mv it could have been better just like their pre dubut solos and sub unit songs that in many cases had even less budget available but always managed to look clean and beautiful (even if they had years planning them out).
@Asterbit Yes, I always keep in mind whose videos I'm watching and remind myself that they most likely tie into the universe. I can't really judge on that though because I don't know enough about their universe. So the perspective I "judge" and speak from is always the one of an outsider. It's amazing though when they manage to tie everything together! I agree with your last point too, a small budget doesn't necessarily mean the video will be messy. Most of the time it's actually the opposite because there's not a lot going on. That's why the video isn't that bad if you keep in mind the budget and time restrictions. There are still some choices that seem counterproductive to both those limitations, but decisions made in a hurry aren't always the most reasonable or logical, so that's understandable. the great thing about voice and star, is that although they share the same music, the lyrics and the theme of each song are completely different. i know star is billed as "voice english version", but really they're only alike in that the music is the same. each are great on their own and i love them both.
