  • Generally running twice per year, The Railway Touring Company’s ‘The West Somerset Steam Express’ runs from London Paddington to Minehead, recreating the through summer expresses that ran to the coastal town back in steam days.
This video sees WSR designed ‘Mogul’ number 9351 & 7822 ‘Foxcote Manor’ lift the return working through Stogumber station, viewed from the Cattle Dock which opened in May 2022.
The two engines were due to give way to 45596 ‘Bahamas’ at Bishops Lydeard to return the train to Paddington, but due to the exception temperatures earlier in the week and how dry it had been over previous months, Network Rail’s steam locomotive ban meant the train was hauled by a West Coast Class 47 diesel.
Interestingly, the carriage immediately behind 7822, Mk1 First Open number 3058, was for many years a converted buffet carriage on the WSR, before being sold to West Coast Railways and converted back to it’s original form www.cs.rhrp.org.uk/se/Carriage....

I wasn't aware that the WSR had a main line connection.

Yes very much so, they regularly - nearly daily - have ballast train workings use Norton Fitzwarren triangle which brings in a stream of income.
