Very beautiful playing by Sri Ananthanarayanan. Really enjoyed the Varaali, Kapi and Shankarabharanam (Extraordinary alapanas - both Varaali and SB). Beautiful selection of songs. Would have loved to hear a Neraval too at some point in the concert. Akshay played in a very non-intrusive yet impactful manner adding a lot of value to the presentation. A fine example of playing mridangam to complement the Veena. Lovely Thani.

This mridangam is enhancing the veena recital one must admit. Deep Varali leading to ... "Rave himagiri kumari talli ..."? Could it be as a tribute to Shyamashastri? Swarajati king Shastri mahavaggeyakara! Mamavaminakshi Vainikagayaka 'Guruguha' tribute!! With mishrachapu! The accoustics here are so perfet that the separation of speakers for veena and mridangam comes through in such a nice way that we can hear both the correct pitch way! I wish all sabhas will learn from the techniques at the Academy stage. The painted/printed scripts of "The Music Academy"[If you insist then do the whole thing for posterity: "The Madras Music Academy" sounds so good and regal!] look awful and in a way disrespectful to written words on a stage setting for the musicians to perch on -- they should be removed and replaced with paintings of flowers or landscape. Meevalla gunadoshamemi in Kapi is such a sweet song with khandachapu. Sri Mali excelled in its delivery. These days almost all mridangam players are tuning mridangams way too much even here. I just don't understand. Just the other day for close to 2 hour in a great kutcheri featuring two lovable and gifted GJRKrishnan and Injukudi EMS the legendary and saintly Karaikudi Sri Mani never once annoyed us with time wastingly annoying tuning. He displayed no uncouty hand waves to fellow pakkom guys; no body shaking. He even covered the valamthala with half of a veshti -- so simple yet delicate. Right after Kapi song the young man did that tuning again. Sankarabharanam !!! and what? RTP? I doubt it as he has only 30 minutes left at his disposal. RTP after all(I wish he would sing the pallavi; if it is padam I might be able to guess it) Tuning again; no stopping to it. I feel sory for the main artiste craning his neck and praying for a quick reolution of this annoying tuning. It is after all Padam(RTPadam) as in Swathi Thirunal's navaratrimandapom! "Sarojadalanetri" -- a tribute to Shyamashastri. There is an Ananthakrishnan who plays professional mridangam. Now we have Ananthanarayanan on Veena, Ananthapadmanabhan on mridangam' there is Trivandrum-based vainika named Ananthapadmanabhan. My later elder brother was named Anananthapadmanabhan(Kurup)! My maternal grandfather was Padmabhushan(Mannath)Padmanabhan! In Tanam you know that Tanam comes from the abbreviated repetitions of Anantom(Endless) and Anandam(Bliss) One of the smartest ways to describe the almighty God acceptable to even agnostics is describing him/her as "Endless Thou and Blissful Thou !!" Anandam-Anantom ... twom ... twom ... "Tanom !!!" MDR always began each of his RTPs with emphasis on Anandam in the beginning and while moving onto Anantom with emphasis on the whole word. Unthum unthum(In Malayalam it means push, push something/someone hard) thum thara thara ... such uncouth words found no homes in MDR's RTP renderings. With instrumentalists we have no assault on our willing ears with those ugly sound bites. That's a good feeling. I hope after the RTP the young Akshay will get to toy with more tunings. That's the Chennai culture; he must accede or lose popularity. Yes he got his chance while the poor vainika was concentrating on the next item on his veena mind.
Darbarikanada and what? Remarkable alapana! Pranams to NAnanthanarayanan. "Govardhanagiridhara!!!" Govinda(My actor son's name:Short film: "Rising" on UA-cam) Which serious rasika can resist the joy of Narayanatirtha's gems of Sanskrit compositions?
Mild but more mridangam tuning; avoid hyper mridangists for future performances. Surati and what? Angarakamashrayami? I can't place the words of the song. A thirupugazh? I love it. Surati is ideal for conclusionary rendering.
Pranams to all on the stage including the talam lady. Narayanakurup Kanthikumar/River Islands/Calif

      S. Balachandar, upon taking the gold ring from his hand and presenting it to 9 year old Mandolin Srinivas, said, wittily, "better to play the manolin like the vina, than vina like mandolin. Unfortunatley this electrification scheme for the veena, with pick up mike, destroys the complex acoustics and overtones of the classical acoustic veena....external mike is quite enough....now with pick up mike we have veenas that sound like mandolins, even if the artist plays nicely, the sound itself is not the same instrument any more than acoustic classical guitar is electric guitar as found in jazz. enna, sahr, what to do?
