Bizarre Graves You Won't Believe Exist

- St Andrew's Church, in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England, is a Church of England parish church. It is one of four Anglican parish churches in the town, and serves the south and east of Chippenham. The church is next to the Market Place in the town centre, and is Grade II* listed.
St Andrew's is a large church, with a wide nave, separated from a long chancel by a wooden, early 20th century screen. There is a Lady Chapel to the south-east of the chancel which is the oldest part of the church. There are two nave aisles, both of substantial width. A side chapel adjoining the south aisle, used as a baptistry, is also known as St Katherine's Chapel. There is a notable monument near the west end of the south aisle, to the Prynne family.
The church has 12th-century origins but was largely rebuilt in the 15th century, including the addition of the ornate south chapel which was built in 1442 for Walter, Lord Hungerford. The tower has a base from the 14th century but the rest was rebuilt in 1633. The church was restored in 1875-78, when the roof was raised, the chancel extended and the interior rearranged. A vestry was added in 1907.
The tower's eight bells were cast in 1734.
Traces remain of a west gallery, which, prior to the reordering in the 1870s, contained the Seede organ. The gallery was taken down when the organ was enlarged and moved to the east end of the north aisle. There was also a gallery in St Katherine's Chapel, also no longer in existence, though supporting stones for it can still be seen in the interior walls.
music played in church was Ubi Caritas also sacred heart

Thank you for all your effort. You allow me to visit places that my health does not permit.
You're welcome John
Yes, dearie, health and age, many, many, thanks!
The faces staring down were called “Eaves Droppers” as they were often found up in the eaves of churches and cathedrals. The idea was that we were always watched by those who went before us.
This is where the term eavesdropping came from - listening in on conversations without being seen.
Fantastic information, I love that, thanks so much
@@vdimasteremeritus 👌 wow thanx....I never knew that 😀
Time and Weather are not kind to any of us! I thought of a bed, as well. Final resting place? But with the coffin shape, a bit odd.
Love the faces and arches in the Church. What carving on that monument! 😮
Awesome, Sue. 💖🌷💖
That's monument is unbelievable but also very sad too
Hi sue Steve from England Just viewed your video. Lovely church inside and out, great sculptures. The church looks like it was built in sandstone. Tombstones as well not granite. Beautiful lead stain glass windows. I do love church music and choir sounding songs. Fantastic sue.
Thanks Stephen, the sandstone definitely doesn't hold well
So, so many table top tombs Sue. Just amazing! But the inside of the church was just gorgeous. A real piece of history from its beginnings through the 1900's. That organ was grand for its day. It must have cost a fortune. Thank you for showing and reading what you could. This place is worth a visit. Many thanks for a great video Sue. ♥️🙏☘️☘️☘️
Thanks Janet ❤️
I love the log panels and windows of this church. The stonework is beautiful including the old headstones. 😊
It sure is x x
Thanks for the church scenes and there were bizarre headstone and graves. And you played lovely music in the church.
Thanks Sally ❤️
I would think the parish records would have records of those graves. I am a genealogist, and that is my thinking. I truly enjoy your videos! I have surveyed all the church and public cemeteries in my county in SC. and the imnscriptions were published in 4 volumes by the local genealogical society. Cemeteries are so fascinating. But ours are nowhere as old as yours. We are a young country.
Yes for here, definitely
Thank you for bringing us with you into this beautiful church and viewing the unique gravestones.
I will probably not ever be able to see this in person, so thank you for reading and showing us everything. It's everything I would want to view closely. ❤🌹
Thank you so much 💓
What a beautiful church and graveyard. The stone used is sandstone and does feel powdery, like you said. I love the monument to Sir Gilbert Prine & his family. I've never heard of those carrying a skull had passed in infancy, never mind seeing it. This is a first for me & is just beautiful. How sad for Sir Gilbert & his wife to lose 5 of their 7 children. I agree with one of your other commenters that it's a pity the pews were replaced by chairs. You dont get the same feel for it. Thank you, Sue, for sharing this with us. You're doing something I've always wanted to do over here in Northern Ireland, but my daughter thinks im mad, lol. Peace to you and yours ❤
Yes a beautiful but very sad memorial, haha my family think I'm crazy too 😜
Sandstone maybe? Wish we had these types of beautiful and respectful places here. But then again, America is quite young. Hopefully someday we can learn to be the same. It’s nice to take a break from the madness here in the States. With that, I am so grateful for you guys. ♥️ This one is astonishing! ✨
Thanks so much Lisa 🙏
Try the East Coast, original colonies. They have some cemeteries with graves from the 1620s.
What a beautiful church, with some wonderful memorials on the walls. Thank you muchly for sharing Sue. 😊👏
Cheers Kev
Beautiful old church! Just imagine the stories this could tell. Thank you.
Thanks so much ❤️
What a beautiful church! So many 1600 stones that are well preserved. Stained glass windows are gorgeous. Thanks Sue🎶💕
Thanks Liz ❤️
An outstanding video 👍🏻👍🏻. The artwork is amazing. The labor put into the church and the tombstones is unremarkable. Ages are so young. Sue has there been any graves you have come across where the person is over 100 years old? Your videos are educational to me.
Yes, I've found a good few now on my travels
What an incredibly beautiful church, peaceful, well kept graveyard, and all set in such a lovely setting. I wondered if all those houses surrounding the church were actually all lived in. I'd love to live there .. but then, I've always wanted to live right next to a graveyard. People think I'm weird, but I reckon I'd have the best neighbours you could possibly have!
Thank you so much Sue for taking us on this wonderful journey with you. I loved it from start to finish. God Bless, and .... keep your light shining bright. ~ Cobs (UK)💖
Oh me too, I'd love that, I don't think it's weird at all
Thank you Sue , what a beautiful church and graveyard .❤
I agree
So far this video is my favorite and will be watched a few times, so much going on and so much to look at.. the grave shaped grave is just amazing.. absolutely a beautiful and peaceful video. Excellent thanks
Ment to say the grave like a coffin
Thank you, it's amazing and that beautiful memorial inside the church is beautiful yet heartbreaking
Yeah I won't lie, I did tear up when you explained that.
That is an amazing place! It feels pretty tranquil.
It's fantastic
Great video!! Such a lovely place. The memorials within the church are fascinating 😊😊 Thanks and have a good day!!❤❤
Thank you 😊
Stunning designs on those old tombstones. Beautiful church, absolutely amazing. You have outdone yourself again, as usual Sue. Makes me yearn for my old country even more. Have not been back since 1980. Will have to get back there one day.
Yes Craig, come home
Thank You Sue! It's a very beautiful church. 👍😀👍❤
It is , thank you
That church is huge
Thank you ❤️
Loved Loved Loved this church so beautiful..Thanks Sue for taking us to these amazing places 😘
Thanks Maureen ❤️
This was amazing. Thank you ❤
You're so welcome!
Beautiful building and grounds. I hate that the pews are gone and replaced with chairs.
Yes, what's a church without pews
Truly beautiful to see such a well kept historic church and grave yard. Yes I love the lead light too, and all those magnificent carved stone arches and monuments. Just beautiful. Thank you so much Sue. God bless xx Teresa 🇦🇺♥
Thanks for watching ❤️
I love stained glass, and I love the sound of music and church bells as well. It is a beautiful church and grounds. The monument that looks like a bed I always think of them as stone beds. Very fascinating because I've never seen anything like them here in the USA. The only time I've seen them have been in churchyards in England, though nothing like the size of this one. Thank you, Sue, for letting us see this lovely church.
Definitely looks like a bed
Gorgeous stained glass!! Beautiful church!! Thank you for sharing!!❤
Thanks ❤️
Great video 😊
Thanks! 😊
So I looked up Chippenham. You are in England.
I loved this video. And the family memorial on wall in church. Thank you Sue. Barb
It's an old video, probably 2 years ago now, loved it there
A lot of table tomes in that graveyard nice church
I just love how weathered they look, some like they've melted
Gorgeous Sue. Thank you for the tour
You are so welcome, how are you Connie?
Thank you Sue. Beautiful church. Interesting graveyard.
Thanks ❤️
Hi Sue (and GV) That church is glorious with all the stained glass . That was lovely thank you❤
Thank you ❤️
Wow, that church is stunning! Beautiful doesn’t seem powerful enough a word to describe it
Thanks Mary
Oh I enjoyed this one immensely.
Thank a million Carla
Beautiful church, and that memorial is gorgeous. It must have been devastating for them to lose five infants, no words could express the sorrow I imagine they had.
I wish the walls could talk, all those graves from the 1600s.
Thanks so much
Amazing❤ So glad they still use the church❤Glass was awesome so were the stones❤ Knocked my socks off😊
Glad you enjoyed it
One can only wish that they are all together,a very beautiful church, the skills of tradesmenback then is mind blowing ,safe travels and god bless you both,🙏🙏👋👋👍🇦🇺

Absolutely beautiful! Love the old graves. The curch is stunning. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it x x
Just stunning and mind blowing this church goes back so far and is still active and I see the town or row of houses is across of the church/cemetery and winds up the road.
Thankyou so very much lovely to watch such a pleasure🙏🫶🇳🇿🐨
Thanks ❤️
Beautiful video. Thank you.❤❤🙏
Glad you enjoyed it
WOW! What a beautiful church! You covered it well. Just a great overall video! That church was just dripping in history. WOW!
Thanks so much, I'll never forget that plaque of Sir prynne and his family
That is a beautiful old church. The stain glass windows are amazing. I love when you share the insides of these churches. Thank you.

G’day Sue from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Once again thank you very much
Great video on the church and sculptures
Also the architecture of the buildings and stone structures
Brendan 👍
You're welcome
Hello Sue…this church is stunning, like you, I love the colour of the bricks too!!! It looks like a castle in one part of it…really beautiful…the gravestones are so weathered that all the writing has worn off, but we can still see their beauty back in the day they were made for the people who are buried there!!! I love these places…as I’ll probably never get to see them myself, so you bringing them to me+others is really nice!!! May all who are buried there
Rest In Peace…!!! Keep well+looking forward to your next adventure!!! The inside. Of the church is equally as stunning as the outside!!! So sad about the 5 little girls who died, but their memorial with their parents is very beautiful!!! The stained glass windows are just amazing…!!! Thank you for sharing!!! X🙃❤️
Thanks a million Sharon
Hey Sue, that is a beautiful church and cemetery. It is unique that the old & Ancient is blended in with the new. For instance the Crypt wall with engraving inside the church door and a post it board to the left, everything is blended in beautifully. That is an unusual coffin Vault grave @ 11:22. I never seen Anything like that in my life or any other cemetery videos. Have a Blessed Day & God Bless You!!!
It's such a unique grave, I'd never seen one like it either
Stunning
Thank you! 😊
This is a neat old place almost looks like a castle .
All these young girls and boys. Makes you wonder what happen to them. There's so many things it could be. So sad
The chest tombs must of been the popular pick at this graveyard there's a bunch 😮.
That is an odd grave!
👀 love the music in the church. Always a comfort.
😢 that's depressing lol no music lol. Understand..
Beautiful sue ❤ 😊 love the recite n music
Thank you for that.
The organ!😮❤❤ if I was there I'd have to ask if I could play it 😂 can't help myself. Will listen to it thank you sue ❤❤🤗 such a beautiful lovely place sue thank you so much for sharing this. God bless and take care ❤
Thanks so much
Very lovely. Thank You Sue!. Cheers.
Cheers John
It's so sad when they puss away so young god bless them hope they all rest in peace I love watching your videos sue take care ❤👍
Thanks a million 😊
Going to have to put st Andrew's on my bucket list! ❤❤❤
You should!
great video, as always.....👍👍👍👌👋
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Sue, would the stone possibly be limestone? It is a stone that weather's out when water often pours on it. The church was one of the most beautiful I have had to pleasure of viewing. Your work is appreciated. ❤
Thanks a million
I like and WOW amazing TY so much ,,Keep up the great work
Thank you John
Lovely church and storys thanks sue
Thank you Hazel ❤️
Sue, I really enjoy your channel. I unfortunately got to see Shannon Ireland and it is a beautiful city, I wish I could bring my wife to see show her the country of her ancestors.
I hope some day you can
Amazing. Thank you... xo
You are so welcome!
Your videos are amazing ty for sharing ❤
Ahh thanks so much
That is very and very interesting headstone. What a gorgeous çhurch❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it
May I make a suggestion, maybe if you used a flashlight with a thin colored cloth over the lens, you may be able to read the weathered stones better. It may read easier from the camera. Just a thought.
Never heard of that, I'll see what I can do, thanks
Beautiful church and graveyard. What a place to be.
It sure was stunning to see
You find such incredibly interesting places Sue👏👏👏
Glad you think so!
Hi sue that brings back memories I got married there and only walked through there few days back and I couldn't believe how old some off the graves are keep up the work this is brilliant
Glad you enjoyed it Philip, I hope you had a wonderful day, certainly is a beautiful town, church and graveyard
All the tombs are so elegant and sad for the babies and young ones who died😢. The church is gorgeous and I love the windows. I just love each and every video. You and GV are the best! You mentioned Edinburgh, are you talking about Scotland? ❤😂❤😂
If funds allow, yes I'd go to Edinburgh, I was there once and it's absolutely stunning
I wish I was rich instead of a poor widow😂 I would send you both on a trip of a lifetime. My ancestors are Scottish.❤😊
@DeborahIsaacs-nx4dw oh Deborah I really, really want to go back to Scotland, I loved it when I visited years ago
What a hidden Gem, Some very nice and pleasing Masonry too, Back in the days of Coal, Pollution in the atmosphere caused Acid Rain , Lime Stone and Sandstone don't fair well to it over long periods of time , Great Video, have a Good one 👍
Thanks Harold ❤️
Beautiful church, inside and outside. It seems the memorials inside the church are more legible than the monuments in the graveyard. The graveyard is very interesting, unfortunate that not many monuments are legible anymore. You mentioned that sandstone does not hold up well as a headstone after a period of time. I have heard the same about granite. In your experience, is there a type of stone that will hold up fairly well after a couple of centuries? Awesome video, thank you very much Sue. Have a great day. 😊
Funny thing is, the headstones that have been covered in overgrowth you'll find they are easy read, slate sometimes looks better
@SerenitySueGraveyards Very interesting. So overgrowth is useful sometimes. I will try to remember that about slate. Thank you very much for the information Sue, and for getting back to me. Take care.
Lovely Sue ❤
Thanks Andrew ❤️
Those faces at the door were unnerving - the one that was intact was very realistic looking, made me think they must have been made to look like actual people that existed at the time. Loved this explore, thanks Sue.
I swear the one on the right blinked at me!
@@cherylschantz9893 Definitely 😂
😅😅
They were a little creepy
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yes! The outside ones more so.
Laid out to sleep amoung the trees
They reach up to point the way home
I want to be laid like this, with big trees around me
Beautiful church!
Thank you Don
Such a beautiful church❤
Looks like limestone eaten away by pollution acids and rain. Frost does not help with spawing eather.
Definitely hasn't held up too well
Anothet wonderful vifeo Sue
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice grave yard for sure. To bad about the music, it sounded lovely, God bless.
Thanks 👍
It looks like the church is built with Sandstone ,it’s got a creamy yellow hue.,also a lot of the chest tombs look the same stone .The problem is it does not weather very well at all and the fumes of the cars ,industry etc produce a type of acid that eats the stone away.I have never seen so many chest tombs.I have seen Bed tombs before but only a few.The bosses(heads) are meant to look down at the worshipers in the church..Symbolic of angels watching down on you I believe .its beautiful inside the Church and gorgeous leaded windows too.The wood ceiling looks like a newer addition but it’s rich and suits the place. Its also well maintained inside and not modernised with horrid blue or red chairs. Thanks for taking us along ..Love n Light to you both🥰
Thanks so much Christine ❤️
The unusual one is called a "bed" tomb. It is supposed to represent a headboard, mattress, and footboard. So a bed tomb. It is a nice addition to an otherwise plain churchyard of box tombs.
Thanks Mary ❤️ sure gave me an impression of a bed
Great👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
Yes, I agree, maybe it was only small, now look at it, certainly gives new meaning to life after death
I am watching your video just now in the church
Thanks
Beautiful trees x I bet they could tell a tale or two x
Loved the trees
Hello Sue. Am from Sherborne in Dorset, England. You ask about the stone - called sandstone just like our abbey here is made of - really lovely!
It's so beautiful
, thank you
beautiful church
Absolutely 💯
I find it sad that the tombstones and markers have been allowed to deteriorate. More efforts should have been made to protect them. Such works of art and snippets of history barely readable. Ofcourse this is from a U.S. standpoint, a much younger country than the U.K. But the only cemeteries you see here in deteriorated shape are those which were abandoned decades ago.
All this just makes me want to clean and polish my relatives bronze plaque headstones, once I am ambulatory again.
Such wonderful churches maintained and restored.
One of my favorites in California is the Carmel Mission. It was restored from ruins not that many decades ago. Missionary Father Junipero Serra is interred below the altar. He was instrumental in establishing the California Mission System when California was still owned by Spain. The circuit of missions is on what is known as the "El Camino Real" now.
Thank you for another great video.
You're correct this one is the UK but most of my videos are Ireland, thank you, it's good to hear of a restored church
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful old church. Why are there chairs and no pews?
No idea, bit strange alright
It's such❤ a beautiful church! It is too bad that mother nature can be so cruel to the stones, but nothing lasts forever, I guess.❤
Unfortunately that's the truth
good morning sue , im home from night shift , catching up on your videos x
Hi Dean, get some sleep, night shift is hard
@@SerenitySueGraveyards yeah it can be , but i wont sleep till around 3pm
Seriously, God I'd be in the bed straight away 😴
breakfast time now lol
🤣🤣
Hello from Ohio, USA. Very beautiful church, many 1600's stones.
Thanks David ❤️
Susan do those table top tombs all drop down 15 feet below the top ?
Yes, most of then are buried way down deep underneath
Gorgeous Cemetery and Church. Looks like a Sandstone on the church and maybe the stones if they have dissolved like that but it could be pollution as well. The one reminded me of a Bed when u came upon it.
It's a really historical place, full of such beauty..yes a few have said sandstone, makes sense. Yes definitely a bed for the dead
@SerenitySueGraveyards amazing ...thank you Sue as always ❤️❤️
Sandstone is much harder and a bit more red than yellow. And is reasonably resistant to moisture. Marlstone, however, is yellow in color and more vulnerable to rain and wear. In this case I think both the church and the graves are made of Marlstone. In Limburg (Netherlands) you should take a look at the marlstone (also called Maastrichtersteen). It is certainly in Limburg where the stone can be found in 'marl caves' that it was used in the past for buildings and city walls.
Thanks for that
I wonder if acid rain could explain why some places hold up better than others.
Yes, definitely
13:21 I reckon there were way more grave markers and they've all fallen over or been removed over time. I imagine that entire yard was full of graves packed shoulder to shoulder. And no fence around it either. So strange.
Definitely there is lots of space there
What kind of material are those tombs made from? Perhaps the material is something that does not hold up under weather conditions.
That church is gorgeous, as are the tombs in the graveyard. I have a replica of the original 1611 King James Bible, and once I read it for a while I get used to the archaic English spellings.
Some say it's sandstone which sounds right
You would be amazing at paranormal SS. X X
I've done a few videos, we even started a separate channel but it's time consuming
