Although Italian football is enjoying a renaissance thanks to good results, the championship still faces recurring problems with racism. Italy is in fact the worst affected country among the big European championships. So how does racism manifest itself in Italian football? And what is being done about it? Our correspondent Natalia Mendoza reports.

Why is anyone surprised? People shouldn't expect much of them, because well, they _are_ Italians.

Statistics say there are more immigrants in Italy than in Spain cause Italy is full of white immigrants from Eastern Europe and Chinese immigrants. In Spain most immigrants are from Latin American and African countries and people from this countries are black and brown, there are very few Eastern Europeans immigrants and Chinese immigrants in Spain, especially if compared to Italy. So yes, the dude is right there are more blacks in Spain than in Italy.

I’m Italian. I’m white. And when I watch at these kind of things, read these type of comments, I feel very ashamed to be one. I can’t put into words how sorry I feel for what I’m seeing. All that hatred makes me feel sick. I am 23 and I wanna speak on behalf of my generation. I don’t mean to justify anyone, just saying that in my opinion elderly people tend to be racist (not all them, luckily...) because of their ignorance (some of them probably skipped school) and also because all they see on the Tv is politicians trying to convince the electors that “Africans” are the reason why the economy of the country is going down. I’m really embarrassed. And pissed at the same time, at people who think that way. We need to make a change and we (as younger generation) are fighting over that! We are all human beings , no one deserves to be treated like garbage just because of their skin color. I wouldn’t raise my children in a racist country.

Perhaps, southern Italians (being historically tanner/darker) value “whiteness” as more high status, while northern Italians are “paler” and don’t place too much emphasis on it.

Well, as a person who was born in italy from a white italian/austrian father and black brazilian mother, all i can say is that this is nothing new to me. Italians have a serious issue with racism, but they don‘t like to admit it and always downplay it. Many of them like to say „ we don’t hate blacks, we‘re just against illegal immigrants“ as an excuse. But when things like this in the video happens it‘s really clear that most of them dislike black people even if they‘re successful, hard working and whatever. Another really popular thing a lot of italians like to say to is „we are just desperate because of the mass migration“...also first of all nothing excuses racism and second this statement is also another big fat lie. I have been living in italy way before the mass migration and have always been treated differently by the majority because of my skin color. This comment has become longer than i‘ve expected...i‘ll end this rant now

Everyone has a problem of racism lol thing is most people don't talk about it, white people are not welcomed in Angola and Zimbabwe for example there's countless stories of discrimination of non-blacks there, China openly discriminates against anyone who isn't Han Chinese, it's the way things work naturally in the world, each group wants cohesiveness, unity and strength and thus naturally rail against everything that is foreign, divisive, different.
It goes beyond skin color, it's about religion sometimes, about ethnicity, culture, even black peoples in Africa often engage in racism against one another despite all being (by European standards) "black"
In Europe where Black individuals are a minority the skin color alone is a factor of unity between them sufficient to categorize all of them in the same "team", in Africa it's different, so its common to see groups in Africa of people with the same skin color discriminate and even persecute one another, it's the way humans function and a core feature of our evolutionary history and that's why it'll never disappear, you can replace one racism with another which is what they're doing in America, but you can't destroy it entirely.
