It's a good move. "We made a mistake, now we're fixing it" is better than "We didn't make a mistake, consume the slop"... but it's worse than "We never tried to release a DLC less than 30 days after launch". All the same I went from "I won't buy Clans if they're going to nickel-and-dime me with DLC" back to "Maybe I'll find the money over the holiday break."
Poor Motivations or not, PGI reacting to the community is a good sign they are not taking their community for granted. Most studios these days end up doubling down on bad decisions rather than changing their choices.
Yeah, backing off from a bad choice isn't as good as not making that choice in the first place, but it is better than staying the course or doubling down.
Nah not really, they were just testing the waters as to what they could get away with. They came into it the intent of backing down if they got enough backlash.
That DLC really under minded my trust in the company. This move gives back more than I had before. Gamers are usually taken for granted and rarely appreciated. Thank you PGI!
Somewhere in the PGI office is a Suit, hair yanked out staring at a screen, and a dev pointing and laughing at him from afar whispering: “Told you so”.
yeah you say dlc.. i say a basic af patch.. fuck my life people are so easily appeased by terrible devs.. it is no wonder you all made the industry this vile.. oh well.. more reason to pirate only
I think this was a good move on there part while I was happy to mixed about Mercenaries dlcs I wasn't too thrilled to see clans get one so soon after launch and it felt quite pricey to me at least for what it offered. This is definitely a good step in my book, at the very least they saw people were displeased with it and did something.
I'm only a little glad they back-tracked on the Trials of War DLC. No idea how this really affects PGI or the people who really worked on the content included with it. I really hope they are working on patching in a NG+ mode for the campaign at the least until there's a campaign mode that allows one to ward or crusade the Inner Sphere, this would be great as the main campaign is only really worth replaying again once. Although having separate campaigns for different invading Clans is also a pretty cool idea as a DLC. A big thing on my wishlist is that any 'mechs added are playable everywhere, and 'mechs unavailable to the Clan you are aligned with could be won by issuing a trial to another Clan or gained by a way of salvage.
@@Mugdorna No, it can still be in the IS, because putting everything on the Homeworlds alone is rather limiting no? But I am all for the sandbox elements, because I quite enjoyed playing Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries the way it was.
This isnt click bait that is actually shockinh news and im very very happy about this news!!! I thought doing a paid dlc 2 weeks after release was ridiculous so im very glad they listened to the community! Thats awesome
Excellent move from PGI, I was willing to spend money to support the game but the dlc was priced too high to do so without feeling I was approving them putting out "meh" content for "woohoo!" prices.
Looked fun but paywall on it without proper reviews... that are now out. This seems again like how it should have been included in the base game. Glad they listened to us. Thank you PGI. Thank BIG Red
Weird, I have to go into the store page to see that it's in my steam library, it's not listed under my existing DLC. Just in case anyone else thinks they don't have it. I also think good behaviour needs to be rewarded.
I'm happy to see they reacted to the community (review bombing?) backlash/feedback. Í bought the DLC (mainly as long-time supporter) but didn't have time to play even once (and i also completed the main story already, so replayability with NewGame+ would be great, even if simulator is nearly the same).
They really need to work on their AI for their games. If they can fix their AI without having to use mods I would be "fine" with Clans. There is nothing that can be done with the story or the characters.
Wow- thats actually good new! Credit where credit is due. Still a baffling move in the first place that they thought they could charge people for that though.
Horde mod and a few other mods should have been in the game off the bat, I think the next DLC should show that Liam isn't dead. That scene felt like, "Oh no, he dead, but later guess what, I'm alive." Also, I think it would lead into the battle with comstar
PGI gets a 5 star rating from me not just for doing this (I hope I get a refund) for the Mechwarrior community but also because I had an issue and someone from PGI emailed me and fixed the issue. That's how you take care of the people that buy your game. Other companies need to learn from PGI. I'm 56. I've played every Mechwarrior game including the original Battletech I got at the Nuremberg PX in Germany back in '89 for my Commodore 128D that I still have. PGI really has done an amazing job bringing back the Mechwarrior franchise with Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries and Mechwarrior 5 Clans. I had to buy an Xbox One S just for this game. Totally worth it. Cheers from America!
The DLC and bonus features have been consistently review bombed on Steam. Fans were pretty angry that they would hide features critical to the replay-ability of the game behind a pay wall and so soon after launch. The patch for the DLC was only 1.5mb as well, so it was clear those features were in the base game and had just been removed at launch. Good on PGI for listening, hopefully the next DLC will have additional campaign missions and mechs that justifies the cost.
I got the game like day 1 didn't even know bout this DLC till you. So thanks for the info and very happy with PGI now. Now if PGI could jsut get the rights to the old games and do an aviversey set if all the games I'd be ecstatic
That's cool. I truly hope they add an IS version that you could maybe play as Masons son or daughter and upload your mech 5 save and be a merc unit opposing the clans. Like maybe have a campaign where you assist the Revenaunts to rescue Hohiro Kurita.
Let's hope when they ask for money regarding this game, they can trump the *free* DLC that we got on W40k: Darktide (low bar to clear, but seriously, we need to vote with our dollars regarding the amount of content.) Thanks for the news!
Don’t own it yet but don’t have a platform I could use it. The kiddos are getting a ps5 come Christmas though so I am probably going to get myself the game. I like that they’re listening to the community and fixing it. I don’t love when companies make mistakes, but humans make them. At least Piranha is fixing it
@BigRed40TECH problem now is that those reviews are basically done. Or at least the review cycle is basically done, and it's too late to fix what's out there.. Damage control for any hope in the future is what this sounds like in a game that really feels like an overall miss.
Good move for them. I admit, the DLC release so soon, and it being little more than game modes, left a sour taste in my mouth, and had me going back to playing MW5:Mercs instead.
I don't have the game yet, but game developers that freaking listen and work towards their fans/player base are good ones(please don't betray us). I also like in my opinion how moves like this are basically a spit in the face to those developers lol.
What do you guys hope for in future dlc? More story driven content? Im actually hoping for like a “mercenaries” mode where i can collect the Inner sphere mechs and load them up with clan tech…
I'm team overtly hostile! *_RRRRRREEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!_* OK, real talk; good on PGI realizing how bad of a move this DLC was. We all need to be honest... Clans has a lot of problems and PGI needs to put some more effort if they want this game to stay relevant.
i actually would of been fine if the dlc costed 10 dollars as a base price as while it adds features that should be in the base game that base game is also 10 dollars cheaper than the standard price. So i would consider it actually better than if the game was 60 and had everything as if you knew you didn't want the extra modes you could have the option to save 10 dollars. It now being free is a great sign that they will commit to offer good value for money.
Hard to speculate on that. I'll take Russ at his word believing that it was a fair DLC. I don't think it was unfair even, it just didn't offer anything I was interested in paying money for. Them making it free is the right move.
By demanding it be free, we have ensured that they have less revenue to make new content. Pgi is the red headed step child of our community and I am ashamed how we treat them.

To be fair, the DLC was sitting on Mostly Negative reviews with 68 (!!) reviews total on Steam. People were not buying it so hard, it was either continuing to poison the tentative good will of their customers, who were reliably loyal and optimistic, before whatever this is had dropped. Or giving it for free. I highly doubt they are going to lose out on this move. You can't make money off of something nobody wants to buy anyway. I know I didn't. And I've bought their game day one, despite the bugs, lackluster parts, bad optimization and the rest of the issues. Because I wanted them to get money to make more better things. I'm holding judgement on this. Too soon to tell what's really going on. Call it caution. Quick turnarounds look good from a PR perspective they also have a tendency to leave room for other unnecessary things in the process. Maybe I'm still a bit jaded after the Helldivers-Sony situation earlier this year. Quick turnaround there but it wasn't a full reversal. Backlash against the Halo Infinite store prices during it's early days also saw action taken that was gradually walked back to 'boil the frog' in a way. Now I hear that this DLC is free but there are scattered reports of it still being paid for on Playstation??? It sets off the warning pings in my head, so I'm not shouting victory just yet.
That's a good step, PGI better deliver a proper DLC. I paid for this DLC and it was really meh, so I look forward to the refund. I am happy to live in a world where PGI aims to be more like Larian, and less like EA or Activision.
Still hesitant to buy any games from them in future due to them carving out content to sell back to you. I will wait for a deep sale, as indeed i suspect will many others. Free Acquisition: Once the price change is live, you’ll be able to download the DLC for free from the Xbox Store. Refunds: Refunds will be issued automatically by Xbox Customer Service within 2 weeks. There’s no need to contact Xbox support.
MAGA Make America Godly Again... This caught me by surprise. I saw the refund and the DLC was still available. My first thought was someone made a mistake . More companies should follow Piranah's example. Listening to your consumers builds trust and loyalty, something that is sorely lacking in today's market. Say what you will about Hello Games(No Man's Sky), they started out roughly. Since then They have had dozens of updates, DLCs and added player content over the years and it was all free. They have a very loyal consumer base.

Refunds: Refunds will be issued automatically by Xbox Customer Service within 2 weeks. There’s no need to contact Xbox support.
As of right now, you still need to pay for it on PS5
I think it'll show up on console in a couple of days afaik.
@ thanks for the video letting everyone know. I’ll be keeping an eye out 🤞
MAGA Make America Godly Again...
