    The switch at the top of the grade is just the end of a passing siding. The safety track is at the bottom. The switch machine is an electric General Railway Signal model 5H.

    I don’t suggest hiking the grade in shorts or in the spring

    Great video your the only person to climb Saluda Tracks please do more I loved that grade but never could find a video of the old runaway track. It needs to be videoed from top to bottom both sides before nature takes it back over again. NS has no plans to rebuild the grade and has rail banked it. There are alot of us railfans who would love to see it please give it consideration thanks. Ed

    The tri-leafed wildflower at around 12:15 in the video is Red (or purple - can't remember which) Trillium. I have the yellow ones in the woods around my place in East Tenn. Enjoyed the video! Have been through there on 26, but never visited Saluda. It's on the bucket list!

      Good question ?? The stream thats in the video is public trout Waters and that's the only way to get there but I've walked it for 15 years and no one's ever told me any different. Theres a lot of hikers there in the winter months but im guessing that its about to be off limits because of the danger!!! The landscapes deteriorating quick!!! Thanks for the comment!

    • @timbod3367
      @timbod3367 5 років тому +4

      Yes it is.. Even now. Just there's no NS security Bulls around to enforce it anymore. Anyone caught doing that while it was in operation would have needed plenty of bail money. Cool video though. Thumbs up.

    • @CMGOUTDOORSADVENTURES
      @CMGOUTDOORSADVENTURES  5 років тому

      Yes ive passed railroad employee's years ago and got a wave from them!! The rails are merely part of the mountain now i think in a year or two it will be off limits for anyone because of the danger!!😩 Thats just my opinion though

    So sad. Saluda handled "Virginia" mined coal. The mining moved to "West Virginia" so now goes via Roanoke and the Piedmont routes. Saluda without coal traffic wasn't worth keeping up. If mining ever resumes in the western part of "Virginia".. Saluda would likely be viable again. I think that's why it's "Rail Banked" and not abandoned. Cool video.

    I had an Aunt that lived in the area at one time. You could hear the trains just roaring as they came up the mountain. It's sad to see that the tracks have deteriorated so quickly since they're no longer in use.

    You want adventure? Real AVENTURE??? Hike down the rail bed from Black Mountain off of old Hwy 70 East toward Old Fort. Most people hike over the tunnels but I have met a few that went through them. Just to hike down to the first tunnel and look at that hole in the mountain you'll think there's no way a modern train will fit. If you are lucky enough to see a train come out it's freaky!!!!!
