    One of the times I saw him he played this song.When he announced what he was going to play there were lusty "BOOS" from the crowd. But he did it so well and at the end when the song goes into a 1600"s Engish folk trip we all loved it and got what he was doing. After the song was finished we gave Mr. Thompson a standing "O He more than deserved it. ". Have seen a lot of artists over the years and Richard Thompson is by far one of the very best.

    A master musician, showing us that a good pop song(just because of its particular arrangement, & delivery, doesn't deter from the fact that it's not a badly constructed song). Can be arranged in any style/genre, & sound pretty credible. Nice one, Richard.

    I remember singing this with a dixie/blues band a few years ago, bartenders used to crack up in recognition when we went into the first chorus because we started it with just a bass line I kind of whisper-rapped the first verse and they didn't recognize it was the oft-vilified (at that time) Ms. Spears' tune until the chorus...

      He killed everything catchy about the song and replaced it with a heavy melody that doesn't work unless you thoroughly force it on the ear

      @miaschu8175 2 роки тому

      The original was really bad, but appealed to its audience. Unfortunately, it was played to death, so the rest of us couldn't avoid it.
      However, RT has proved that the song is good, it was just the original arrangement that was bad.
      I have a lot of sympathy for B Spears - she was treated badly by the industry and her parents - but most of her music cynically exploited her youth, appearance and sex appeal. It was all attitude - style over substance. Music should be more than that. Ms. Spears could have been more than that.
