  • How can you respond to the sounds of the world around you? VOCES8 and Apollo5 explore this idea, responding to the sounds of Tibetan Singing Bowls with a gentle, meditative and inward performance that encourages the listener to close their eyes, have space to think and to listen deeply.
This is the world premiere performance of a new work, 'Listen' by Paul Smith, performed by VOCES8, Apollo5, Teena Lyle and directed by Paul. The piece is written as a companion piece to John Cage's iconic 4'33" and was performed as part of a concert experience called 'Renewal?' in the summer of 2021, as the world began to emerge from an enforced 'silence'.
'Listen' encourages the singers to create sung responses to the sounds that they hear being created by the Tibetan Singing Bowls. The playing of the bowls themselves is inspired by a piece of music developed as an installation called 'Longplayer', housed in London, which will continue to create new music for one thousand years.
The performers are given directions based on their position in a formation inspired by the Fibonacci spiral, and alongside sung notes, you can hear vocal overtones mingling with the harmonics from the Tibetan Singing Bowls.
'Listen' can be found on the album, 'Renewal?', which is released in early 2022.

As a psychology major who’s learning stress reduction techniques, this would be absolutely perfect to meditate to. It’s beautiful. The bowls give a sense of focus while the voices keep the mind centered.

This is the most surreal spiritual experience I have all year. The overtones and singing bowls is an amazing mix

If it doesn’t appear like the singers are vocalizing, it’s because most of them are humming at an extraordinarily low volume. Straight tone, as Voces8 is known for, blends remarkably well with the vibrating bowls. The effect is that the sound leaves the human body and floats across the room, with little sense of where it emerged.

Definitely something different than they normally do. And as a performer/an artist, sometimes it's creatively good to push yourself out of your comfort zone by trying something new. We have gotten so used to hearing both groups sing that it was interesting to hear them be in a more supportive role to the sounding bowls rather than be the featured singers in this piece. I happen to love meditative/relaxing music/sounds. So with this piece, I believe the visual of seeing all of them was unnecessary. It's like with ASMR, I don't necessarily need to see who's making the sounds; I just need to hear the sounds.

I loved this. The mix between the human voices and the long echoes of the bowls was perfect. I'll be hanging out for the album.

I get the concept and aleatoric approach and for me, the recording mix is the Achilles Heel. I wanted to hear the voices responding to the Tibetan Bowls. As far as staging goes, a completely different visual makes more sense to me. Love the Fibonacci Series - it's such a natural and earthy phenomenon.

I hate to be negative, I like the harmonics of the bowls but I tuned in to hear singing not some zen meditation. Why were Voces and Apollo needed for this?

If you don't like it move on? It is complex sound and I think the fact that they're a mature enough group to try something like this is amazing. Like the name suggests, just 'listen.' It may even lower your blood pressure and kill some of that negativity that you allegedly hate, but also love to spread :)

I hope it won't be music heresy if I say that I don't see the musical sense in it. Just a sound experiment and the impression it made. But music should be much more than just a performance of sounds.
Greetings for all great singers, God bless you +

The sounds were beautiful and im certain that it required more musicianship in every participants left ear lobe than i’ll ever have in my entire body…but…kinda why? it feels a bit like a college theatre project where folks imbue every small action with teenage significance. it ends up feeling pretty pretentious and affected. if the message is that we need to return to a more spiritual and organic way of experiencing music, then why show the singers at all, much less in full formal garb. whatever tho, i’ll still listen to it for the nice sounds!

Hmmm... yeah, nah. Not for me. Give me Handel, Vivaldi, or Gregorian Chants, etc. The greatest music ever created by human kind was meant to be performed in the greatest structures ever built by human kind - the cathedrals. When I was in Austria, this changed my life. Singing bowls? Fine. They are for glorifying the internal. I prefer to gorify the Eternal.

Ok, I hear the throat singing, but this is all too pretentious and over-serious. There's a time and place for this music, but this wasn't it. Creepy! -- with everyone standing around doing nothing, in formal wear, with somber, serious non-expressions on their faces. Normally I'm blown away by your performances, voces8, but this is a goose-egg.
