Yay-I really look forward to seeing each latest installment in this series of HH author interviews. Well done for tracking down Mike, even though it's his only Heresy book it was great to hear from him. I really knew nothing about him before this interview. He seems like a great guy, and it's really interesting to hear him lift the lid on how an author goes about tackling these briefs and constructing a story that ticks the required boxes. Fallen Angels is also a really good read and an underrated HH entry. It's odd he never wrote another (I think there's a short story by him in Tales of Heresy?). Sounds like he got pigeon-holed as the go-to guy for broken or problem stories at BL so perhaps that's why?
I absolutely loved this interview! Mike seems like a lovely chap. This duology is some of my favourite HH stuff because it illustrates the sandbox 40k has. Really happy that Mike fully rolled with the fantasy stuff with Caliban and stuff.
Very cool perspective to hear from him about his history as a bit of a repair guy in the black library, working on projects that were constrained by previous works or pre-existing ideas. I agree with you that he seems to have quickly established himself as a versatile writer they could count on for tricky situations that other writers might dread a bit
The answer to the question about inspiration from real-world combat makes perfect sense, I remember reading this book and the battle scenes really jumped out at me, thinking how much it reminded me of reading Black Hawk Down!
Hi Mira! I love your interviews! I was wondering if you would ever consider doing a "rough guide to 40K" style video with everything you've learnt about the setting over the last few years? A sort of "I've been learning about this madness for a little while now, and this is what I've figured out so far..." kinda thing. It's a totally selfish request, as I would love to show my gf a 40k intro video that was done from a girl's perspective, and there's not much of that out there! Either way, please keep doing these fantastic videos, I always look forward to them!
This popped up next to a video about Wong Kar Wai's Fallen Angels on my main page, and I was briefly confused about why Mira was talking about Hong Kong cinema... I've built a bunch of custom Fallen chaos marines for playing kill team, so happy to hear more about the related fiction.
Hi Mira, wasnt sure where to ask you so I just went here lol. Are your t-shirts good quality? I have had other merch and they dont survive more then 3-4 washes lol.
@@miramanga Oh gosh, I didnt mean to get you worried!! Everyone says I belong to the Emperor's Children so I was planning on getting a "Save Fulgrim" or "The warp made me do it" I cant decide.
That death Gav wrote and Mike mentioned is probably the worst death in the whole Dark Angels storyline. It was just insane and pretty much out of character...
Agreed. It was a clear attempt to emulate GoT which was blowing up at the time with the "no character is safe" philosophy. Mr. Thorpe, please, you guys literally kicked off the Heresy by introducing a damn primarch and made him a head shorter almost instantly. We know you can do this. Don't do it to characters that are clearly set up for an epic showdown with their friend/rival 😢 Not to mention Nemiel wasn't the only big character that gets killed off in the same collection of short stories, but at least there was an easy way to salvage the other one...
@@Elbuarto Seeing Jonson lose control like that just because a marine argues a counterpoint was weird. The same primarch that spent days stalking Cruz on his ship can't keep his cool because Nemiel says there is a decree issued by the Emperor?... It was clear that back then they had no unified vision for the Lion. And as you mentioned such a waste of Nemiel. It also didn't work that great as a motivation for Zahariel to turn on the Lion - at least not the way it was done in the books. Could he really not ask what happened that the Lion smacked on his cousin? This whole Nemiel-part felt rushed, it could have used some more space for elaboration. The way it was done it would have been even better if Nemiel was sent on a pointless suicide mission or abandoned and died - not one-punched-to-oblivion.

Great interview, one of the best yet, really enjoying this series :)
I’m happy that you’re happy!
One of the best yet Mira, and thats saying a lot. What a gent of a man and really great to hear all his extended views on the novel.
If Mike hasn’t played 40K since 4th edition, then he’d probably be more comfortable getting back with 30k. We still use templates and scatter dice 😊!

This book finally brought back the Dark Angels after the abysmal decent of angels

I love that idea. Let me have a thing.

Fantastic interview, Mira!! Mike Lee is such a delightful author to get to talk to, this was a treat!

What a lovely and talented guy he is. :D
Such a cool dude! This was a lovely listen!
I’m so happy that you enjoyed!
this is so perfect i just read cypher and son of the forest
Ooooo can’t wait for this ! Currently listening to a Warhammer Fantasy Lorebeards podcast before I join this.
One of the 2 books I skipped in the HH so I'm glad to see a little about it
I recommend reading it!
We like the interviews very much, thanks Mira!
Cool interview
Looking forward to it! Mike is also the author of possibly my favorite 40K novel, the hugely underrated Legacy of Dorn.
@@hcaalt he’s a lovely human too!
Do you have these as a podcast feed?
@@KSweeney36 not yet, but I will see if Abitor Ian can help me with this
