If you have wisdom teeth, you might have heard this at least once from your doctors. “Let’s remove your wisdom teeth.”
Why is that doctors always love to extract or remove your wisdom teeth? Are they so bad?
Mostly by 12 years of age, you have all teeth, except the wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth which are last molar teeth, grow around 18 to 21 years. Because, they come very late, they are often called wisdom teeth.
By 21 years, most of us have 32 teeth. 16 teeth in the upper jaw and 16 in the lower jaw, which includes 4 wisdom teeth.
The fun part is, not every one of us has all 4 wisdom teeth. Some may have 3, 2, 1 and few people don’t have any wisdom teeth at all.
For those who have at least one wisdom tooth, you may end up in one of the two situations.
1. Your wisdom teeth is $. Surprisingly only 10% of people have healthy fully grown wisdom teeth. In my case, I have all the 4 wisdom teeth fully erupted and so far very healthy.
2. The remaining 90% have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. Meaning, your wisdom tooth has grown at an angle, or developed cavities, have grown only partially such that they looks way shorter, or wisdom teeth caused a swelling to nearby teeth. In all these conditions, we call impacted wisdom tooth and may need treatment.
Now, If you go to a dentist with this kind of impacted tooth, they simply tell you to get it extracted or removed. Believe it or not, more than 5 million people every year are getting their wisdom teeth removed, which is around $3 billion in dental costs. Infact, over 85% of Americans have their wisdom teeth removed.
However, it is important to take a lot of care of your molar teeth mainly those wisdom teeth. With proper care, you can protect your wisdom teeth.
1. Mindful brushing: Wisdom teeth are far away in the mouth. Most of the time, we unmindfully skip to brush them. But with any extra soft brush you can easily reach them. Make it a point, to first brush your wisdom teeth in all the corners, and then brush rest of the mouth. That way you remember to brush them. If you cannot reach with traditional brush, you can use special brush like this. This kind of brushes are easy to reach corners and gaps which you often miss. This is one best way to keep your wisdom teeth clean and healthy forever.
2. Water floss: Wisdom teeth is hard to reach and it is even harder to floss gaps between wisdom teeth. So one solution is Water flossing. Water flossing is one easiest way to get rid of any food debris stuck between your teeth. These devices are relatively cheap and effective. Trust me, they are worth every dollar you spend on them.
3. Oil pulling: Oil pulling is an ancient remedy to maintain oral hygiene. Oils like Coconut oil, Sesame oil or Olive oils can easily reach to the corners of the mouth. This can dissolve oil soluble bacteria, which is otherwise very hard to remove. Oil pulling is cheapest and most effective way to prevent cavities, gingivitis, Gum infections and help to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
4. Apply neem paste with fingers: Before brushing your teeth, Make a simple neem powder paste. Just take a little of Neem powder and mix it with water like this. Apply this paste on wisdom teeth using a brush or just using fingers. Wait for 30 seconds and rinse off with water. After that brush your teeth normally with any herbal toothpaste. Neem has strong antibacterial properties and can kill bacteria that causes cavities and protects your wisdom teeth.
