Lyrics
Man looks up on a yellow sky
And the rain turns to rust in his eye
Rumours of his health are lies
Old england is dying
His clothes are dirty shade of blue
And his ancient shoes worn through
He steals from me and he lies to you
Old england is dying
Still he sings an empires song
And he keeps his navy strong
And he sticks his flag where it ill belongs
Old england is dying
Youre asking what makes me sigh now
What it is makes me shudder so
Well
I just freeze in the wind
And Im numb from the pummeling of the snow
That falls from high in yellow skies
Where the time stained of england flies
Where the homes are warm and the mothers sigh
Where comedians laugh and babies cry
Where criminals are televised politicians fraternize
Journalists are dignified and everyone is civilised
And children stare with heroin eyes
Old england!
Evening has fallen
The swans are singing
The last of sundays bells is ringing
The wind in the trees is sighing
And old england is dying
One of the top ten songs of humanity. A masterpiece. Thank you for that
Wish I could click like more than one! At least 1000000 times would it :)
My son was born in 95 and he is just getting to the age where he can appreciate some of my fave music. My love and I can listen to this over and over and love it every time!!
I accidentally click on report on your comment and that made me think, if one of the options on the report was good crack I’d select that one. No such option was there so I cancelled the report.. anyway the report is that’s good crack. Good luck brother and god bless the fucking lot of us
it's the drums, and the sax...and the lyrics.....man, the lyrics....
The drum, the sax, the lyrics, the catchphrase...brilliant
The empire is dying, the empire's dead. But the words remain, the piano, the saxs will never leave.
Arise sir Mike Scott, he had it nailed all the way back then. Probably scared the shit out of them with his insight. This is the sea has been one of my most emotional albums since I was 17, I'm 47 now and it still does the damage ❤
True Words Friend. This albums kicked me so hard and at that times, I´ve listen to completly different music. This song could be one of the reason, why I love Scotland and the Irish Brothers. Greez from Hamburg, Harbor City, Germany. ´There always will be an England´.

Ten years clean 56 years old..this song hits home just as hard as ever..beautiful.
Backing the 80's I worked in a shipping office on the Tyne. My colleague helped me learn to drive by letting me drive his car to his flat at a lunchtime. He would take his dog for a walk and I would prepare dinner in a slow cooker, curry, stew, or something, for him and his flat mates. When I had finished the prep, I would sit at an old upright piano they had and play this song. I'm a guitarist really but I could bash out a few piano chords. This song still sticks in my mind from all those years ago, mainly for the lyrics. How perceptive was Mike Scott ?? Still means something today. Great songwriter, seen 'Waterboys' 3/4 times over the years.
Today, our politicians still think Britain is influential in the world, we are not. We hang on to these 'imperialistic' ideas. Nobody gives a shit about us. We are nobody. Better get used to it, THE EMPIRE IS NO MORE, SLAVERY IS NO MORE ! Let it go. Let's just be nice and try and help people from all countries and all walks of life, without trying to influence them.
PLEASE, for my/your children and grandchildren's sake. X
the best sax solo ive ever heard ,the lyrics and the song are also fantastic ,a wonderful scottish wordsmith
Better than g rafferty no way second best love the fishes
There is just not enough SAX! in the world today! Agreed.
Anybody who knows the waterboys knows that the spirit of this song is the fathers from what you frustrated fools are trying to make it out to be. This song is about the struggle of working people.
One of the few songs that makes the hairs on my neck stand up 😉amazing song
One of my favourites. It's incredible my feelings with this song.
Totally sublime song in every way…….part of one of the greatest albums ever……kudos brothers.
Somebody save that sax! That man is KILLIN' it!
You should hear the whole album then 😉
Goosebumps. Haven't heard this for nearly twenty years. Takes me back to a very pagan place :-)
30 for me 👍🏻
@@mike.limavictor6435 late 1980's for me
It’s not just not old England - it’s our world as we knew it
I love the Waterboys ❤
I wrestled with him for years, Old England. He'd been in that navy, and he was charismatic, wily, with many connections, and straight out of the Victorian era, with hidden hardness and bigotry. He wouldn't let go, wouldn't let things get bigger, more relevant to the day, and this song helped me see what I was up against, the album helped with what I had to do. Got precious little for it - exploited by so-called Trustees. But thanks Mike, once again.
England is Dying really, please Brexit, now
@@antoniosousa1164 still stand by that? “Brexit” was modern day brainwashing at its finest. All to put money in the pockets of those who swear to have our best interests intended
How relevant is this song today? Mike, had you known what drove you to write this song in 1984/85 was merely a shadow of what it would mean today would your lyrics have been so beautiful and tame? I have been a fan of the Waterboys all my life since this record came out. I have played this record to death and know it inside out, but this song now speaks differntly to me today. Given Brexit and all the Tory lies worn so openly and cheered on by the mindless mob, this song now plays like prophecy to my ears. "His clothes are dirty, shade of blue"... Tory blue and still he sings his Empire song from his yellow sky where he drops bombs on the poor below safe in his fantasy of nostalgia. Powerful stuff!
You've turned a beautiful, complicated song about a beautiful, complicated country into a hate filled rant about the Tories and Brexit?
Wow. 🤭
@@jamiecartwright5469 That is what the song is about. Do your homework. The song is about social decay and the reference to blue is a reference to Tory Blue. It is about Thacher's England and the miner strikes. Don't like that? Take it up with Mike. He wrote it.
waterboys, pogues, saw them both play, real music, real talent, raw songwriting talent from real musicians,i despair at the tripe thats churned out nowadays,i count myself lucky to have been in that era!! so many great bands...take me back!! lol.
Love this album, love the song, love Mike's voice! Thx for sharing NewOrderUp!
back in the past, thank you for posting!
What a great song. Applies to many countries where their old country and customs are dying. C'est La vie!
The word "freeze" on the CD, falling from a high A, always makes me tingle. Live performances never seem to feature this.
True Wordsmith Mike Scott,bless him🤫👊
this song just about sums it all up.
ich kenn die Jungs seit langem. 1990 oder so. Immer wieder gut das zu hören.
Beautiful song, played at max volume rocks like no other, wonderful stuff! England rocks!!
England is Dying really, please Brexit, now
You can't honestly believe this songs message is that England rocks? listen to the lyrics man...
@@NothingConcrete
Old England is dying… from empire to European isolation.
@@karlconnolly3994 they sold us out. They destroyed us so they could buy more holiday homes and private jets.
Janet opened my eyes. forever grateful for introducing me to the waterboys.
Strong Words; beautifully spoken!!
some of you have missed a big point in this song - its "old" england that's dying.some of us believe in a new England,we see what our ancestors did terribly wrong and don't want to see those things happen again. Is any country without historic sin?Let it go,and move on,or the cycle keeps going.
What a load of bollox
@@JDE_2713 You embarrassed yourself with that reply.
What wrongs did your English ancestors do then?
Mine were cannon fodder and serfs for a thousand years. They didn't even get a vote until 1918 and have been ignored ever since. At the height of empire my Victorian English ancestors were walking around in rags.
I must assume your ancestors were members of the ruling class.
I don't blame you for feeling guilty.
This song doesn't want to change the world, it's not looking for a new england, it's not even looking for another girl.
Nails the scerge of narcotics on my generation in this green and pleasant land
How I love this fuckin´song!!!
Don't bare any ill will towards England but this son is so prophetic even if in a different context.
Tory blue... This song is more relevant today than the day it was written!
Spot On.
And not only England, but Europe also.
+DAn Nils nils jeg er dansk amerikan. Du og din familie boer vurdere aa komme til Oreon. I am so sad for Norway.

QUESTION eVERYTHING
Magnificent Mike
Mike Scot gives me a reason to live.
Yo Ma Pal, Great memories. . x
The posted lyric "Where the time stained of england flies"
Should read "Where the well loved flag of England flies"
"Still he sings an empires song
And still he keeps his beliefs strong
And he sticks his flag where it all belongs
Old england is dying"
Mike was an optimist person during the 80's. Maybe if somebody from 2021 went back to 1984 and tell him how the future is nowadays, he wouldn't have believed what happened since 2016 onwards... Nationalism is back, sadly.
Agreed .... such a sad way to go. Hard to believe in 1985 it would get to this - breaks my heart to think what could have been - had so much hope in the 80s totally destroyed since 2016.
it was a prophecy?
I know when you Google the lyrics it will tell you he sticks his flag where it all belongs but my ears tell me "ill belongs" meaning where it doesn't belong.
It's ill belongs
Especially in the EU.
Wow love the drums
Very well said. I am with you, friend.
CrazySuch an old songBut still trueI love old e stillAnd hes still not dead

LOL today more than always
I've gotta get this album!

That is That Is What It Is!
So true

this should be our national anthem
No It Shouldn't xxx
We would prefer a brilliant English band thanks. There are hundreds to choose from. 🙂
Still stirs the Irish pride in me... and makes me miss my dad and my grandfather.
You know he's Scottish, right?
Haha classic nationalist nonsense that this divisive song creates.
@Msskeletonkey1 Try also to get A Pagan Place (1984) and Fisherman's Blues (1988)!
Maybe their masterpiece (with This is the sea)
This is the sea, another beautiful song x
couldnt agree more, can i add 'Red Army Blues'? if u dnt mind 🙂
Absolutely brilliant album
Craig McCormack you can “You In The Sky” and their cover of Van Morrison’s “Sweet Thing” to the mix too!
"The pan within" .Can't beat that.
It's MY Heart >................ Not Yet ??!!!
I am A DANE....555 300 years.... & we are Strong...... England Will Not Steal we got everything ... Oh just to have a Jam with them .. SABA XXXXXX
Live from Scotland, when old England is dying, an it drags everyone with it..including this song was written then ..look at us now warning people
It's interesting when you learn just how much of the British Transatlantic Slave Trade was administered by Scots - and how vast swathes of Scotland became rich through Scots owned slave plantations in the Caribbean. New Town Edinburgh is built entirely on oversees exploitation.
A massively disproportionate Scottish involvement from the British Slave Trades wicked inception - yet to this day - England - (the nation that banned it) - carries all of the blame.
The Chinese opium wars are also interesting, particularly the founder of HSBC, a Scottish colonialist who reaped misery and division on the Chinese people for profit.
Northern Ireland aka Ulster of course was Scotlands first colony - populated by Scottish Presbyterians. William of Orange was Dutch.
Yet all of my life the English have carried the blame.
We were the nation that had its shopping centres bombed by the IRA. Scotland, of course - remained safe.
Then we have the Indian Raj, many of its top military brass were educated Scots - much like colonial Africa.
Not forgetting Nova Scotia and Canada. The indigenous people there were shown zero mercy by the industrious, imperial Scots.
Right up until very recently we have Blair, Edinburgh born and bred - taking us all into an illegal war against an Islamic country - sewing fresh division and resentment for centuries to come.
Of course - it was the English that had their public transport system bombed as a result.
The Scottish Bank meltdown, Sir Fred Goodwin and gormless Gordon. A catastrophic bail out we are all still paying for.
Hundreds of billions that could have been used for hospitals and education - spunked on inept, deluded Scottish capitalism.
Thank goodness for shallow pop music - always vital a source of disinformation for the gullible - much like the industrious Rupert Murdoch output - another wonderful Scot bringing sunshine into our lives. 🤭
ahhh ol' blighty!!!
pleased he finally moved outside the Commonwealth.
Things change in all places with the passing of people and like all places England changes through ages - it wont die
The UK's national anthem for June 23, 2016.
carpog we won 🇬🇧
HARD National anthem at that! lol
Ste Latimer, what have you won exactly? You think this country has become shit because of Europe? Think you'd better look closer to home. Try Westminster.
For 2020. Worst government at the worst time.
Heroin eyes. Not the prettiest things.
When this song came out, there was a vast amount of pure heroin in the country, and so many of us did have ''heroin eyes'' .
So true mate
I knew someone dear who wrote down the lyrics to Whole of the Moon and could recite them . Impressed yes but I told her that Old England was a better tune ! I wonder what she thinks now ?
Old Europa is dying......everything is dead .......god bless John Cleese ,giving people a voice ....! This is Genozid and Europa is definitivly dying .....See you in another time and maybe ......better World....!

13/12/2019, Old England has died.
Children will stare with heroin eyes, people will starve to death, and the elderly will freeze to death in the winter. We were there in the 80's, it was not pretty, it was violent and you have planted the seeds again. Good luck.
Nice one! Skinny boy.
