    I saw this opening night at midnight. There were people dressed in Star Trek uniforms, people in full Klingon armor. You have to understand, we'd lived through about 4 years of Captain Picard's diplomacy-first command style...and the crowd in that theater was bloodthirsty. When Sulu ordered, "Target that explosion and fire!" everyone in the theater went absolutely berserk! The packed house was on their feet cheering! To this day, the best movie experience I've ever had!

      I think Kirk, and also Sulu, learned in Star Trek II to finish off the enemy in battle. Otherwise, they'd be dealing with some trick like Genesis.

    One thing I really like about this scene, is how the bird of prey fires on the Enterprise from so many different positions. It gives the sense the ship is flying all around the Enterprise so they couldn't figure out its position. Then when Kirk fires the torpedo, it moves around in swerves, retracing the path of the Bird of Prey, just like the firing positions of the ship. It really gives the scene a sense of playing out in 3 dimensions.

    You even see how the Excelsior is superior to the good ol´ Connie. Even with full shields the first Torpedo from the klingons left burning marks on the hull of the Enterprise. Meanwhile the shields of the Excelsior absorb the whole energy of the torpedo impact.

  • @Lyze
    @Lyze Рік тому +93

    The look Chang's sudden realization that the plan just got flushed down the toilet the second the Enterprise fires a single torpedo is priceless and very telling of the character. He knew right then that if they're just firing a single torpedo in a random direction that the Enterprise had nullified the advantage of the cloak and he was likely doomed, even before the torpedo started corkscrewing around seeking his ship.
    The Enterprise going full reverse made him suspicious too. This guy was very cautious and astute for a Klingon.
    Also I guess there was no budget for phasers in this movie. Had I been Kirk I would have ordering phaser fire in the general direction of where the torpedoes appeared from like Riker did against the Scimitar.

    • @tepan
      @tepan 10 місяців тому +4

      Firing phasers in all directions is a maneuver Kirk did himself in Balance of Force, if I remember correctly. Besides, warping directly next to the planet and beam down a few seconds later could also have been an option, I think.

      In one of the numerous "non-canon" ST novels the Enterprise is tasked with conveying a sort of variety show troupe. One of them is a sewer-tier actor whose rendition of Hamlet is (pretty much verbatim) "Should I kill myself or not? Life is so bad right now I might as well get it over with."
      Kirk and co. are disgusted, but eventually foist him off on some Klingons who heard the act and went bonkers.
      That is another origin/version of the "Shake Spear (sic) sounds better in the original Klingon" gag that is also credited to "The Undiscovered Country." I do not recall the novel's name and so cannot confirm which came first, but I'm inclined to think the novel did.

    I would have gotten on coms and taunted the Klingons for this stuff. " I do not see you Chang. I do not see Klingon warriors. I see assassins that strike from the shadows and stab in the back. Poking at their enemy but not fighting. This is not a fight. This is a coward stabbing a blind man. Decloak and fight as warriors perhaps to die, or live as cowards pretending you win anything but dishonor stabbing from the shadows like the coward dogs you are. "

    Two destroyers versus a submarine. One of my favorite scenes. Not because of the “‘splosions,” either. The Enterprise crew wins because they’re working together as a team to solve a problem.
    Chang is a great character, but he’s essentially by himself. The other guy fires on what Chang targets. Fun fact: in Klingon Academy, Christopher Plummer reprises Chang (prequel) and admits that he thinks Kirk is at least part Klingon! 🤣

    Superb scene, easily one of treks best. The unknown of where the klingons are and where they'll strike, coupled with Sulu racing to get there and help his friends. This movie nails it, which sounds almost impossible for the 6th movie in a franchise.

  • @studentjohn
    @studentjohn 9 місяців тому +1

    Chang knows, the instant the torpedo is fired. Not exactly what Enterprise's gambit is, but that they have come up with one, and he doesn't have time to figure it out and counter it. He knows that Kirk wouldn't have launched unless he'd seen a gap in Chang's defences. Really well acted.
    Gonna have a minor nitpick: If Khitomer gets similar strength sunlight to Earth, the stars shouldn't be visible: If a viewing camera were set up to be sensitive enough to see stars then the planet and the ships, bathed in sunlight, would be hugely overexposed. Same for an eye dark afapted enough to see stars - the planet and ships would look blinding. If the camera was set up ( or eyeball day-adapted enough) to get a decent view of the sunlit ships and planet it wouldn't pick up stars.Ok, pedanting over - thank you very much for posting this!

    • @studentjohn

      @@jv-lk7bc :D The crews could have told their space TV's to show the stars in the background, but the external shots would still be wrong if they're supposed to be representing what a human eye would see. Hey, I'm a pedant, it's my idea of fun to think this stuff too far through. Though I kind of like the idea that all the view screens default to inserting background stars just because it's prettier.

    Great quality! I’ve left this comment in other videos but technically that BoP was mostly likely unshielded while cloaked. That first torpedo would have taken it out. Those ships are tiny. No way it took 5 torpedo hits or whatever. I know it was for dramatic effect.

    Interesting how, even when the Excelsior shows up, Chang continues to train most of his fire on the Enterprise. Probably a wise decision. Neither of them can see him, and if they're both intact they can coordinate their fire in a grid pattern to sound him out, like depth charges when hunting submarines. Wiser for him to take one ship out entirely, then move on to the second.

    Fantastic scene. The only thing that has always taken me out of TUC though was the very obvious and only slight redressing of the TNG Enterprise-D sets - particularly engineering.

    • @guspaz
      @guspaz 7 місяців тому +1

      It's not quite as blatant as some of the shots in 5, where they didn't even redress the corridor from some shots. At least in TUC they tried a bit harder, made the corridor set narrower, changed out the LCARS panels. However, most of TNGs sets were themselves redresses or modifications of sets built for TMP. Well, some of them, like engineering, were technically originally built for Phase II.
