    Hi Gideon's mom here 😊 Not everyone understands why I want to let Gideon experience free flight, and that's ok. I do want to clarify that the reason we are going to Utah is that we are working with very experience free flight trainers who have safely done this for many years. We will be meeting with them and other professionally trained free flyers in Utah. We will be flying together in pre-scouted, safe places for each bird's skill level. I don't want to fly him her in Texas because the landscape is not ideal where we are and flying alone is not as safe. Every decision we are making is for the safety of Gideon. If for any reason it didn't feel safe, we wouldn't do it 💚💚

      I rescued a parrot who was my best friend for 15 years until I lost him last winter to illness or old age. I also altered my life so my boy could live the most natural life possible. He flew wherever he wanted and I hid various foods so he could experience foraging. It was a rewarding experience and though it broke my heart to lose him, I know I made his last years his best years. I agree with you totally. AND you get to see the beauty of Utah. What could be better! You go girl. You go GIDEON!!!!

      People sometimes can't think out of the box, to efficiently think of ways to keep the bird happy, healthy, and mentally stimulated, and make being a bird owner as effortless as possible. You have to learn to make some sacrifices, and understand how to create routines to make "your" life as enjoyable and simple as possible.
      Case in point, my green cheeked conure kept coming in the kitchen area when we prepared food. The kitchen isn't visible to the bird from most of the living area. The conure kept getting in the way, and made us nervous that it might hurt itself. The bird just wants to be with the flock, and maybe get a small treat.
      Remedy: I bought a small cage that sits on top of the fridge, and I put the bird in it when she wants to be with us, sometimes I give her a small vegetable or fruit treat to reward her for being good. Problem solved, she's stays safe, we feel better, and the bird doesn't accidentally leave us any biohazardous material.

      I have a 24yo blue and gold macaw. They are like little humans with a spectacular array of VERY FAMILIAR emotions. Anger, fear, jealousy, hurt feelings, competition. You name it, they’ve got it. When you bring a non human being into your home they become family members and it is a commitment for life. Through sickness and in health etc. You are the only flock they have. A bonded relationship with a bird is one of the most remarkable adventures a human can experience. My Zazu loves to put one of her large wings around my shoulders when we are cuddling. How many people can say they get hugged by a macaw on a regular basis?

      @@shovington67 Well, I should tell you the bird won't do well being let to stay on top of the fridge. This is because there is pretty constant air flow past that area and it will make your bird sick if you do it often. Just a word to the wise.

      @@fewferfev , I dont keep her in the kitchen ? Its an alternate cage that keeps her out of trouble for 15 mins when we chop up vegetables and prepare the dinner meal. I have a pigeon that's attached herself to me. She's used to flying around the house and perches on the bathroom door at night. BUT she poops anywhere she feels like. Usually on me. She was 5 years old when we met on the back patio. She got separated from her coup, probably because she was chased by a hawk and she wouldn't leave so we started feeding her and I had conversations with her in pigeon coos. Brought her into the house when the temperature dropped and she's been with me for 9 years now.

    This is inspirational to me. My gal and I, along with her parents found/rescued/adopted an Albino Indian Ringneck about 18 months ago who was extremely traumatized by her experience before finding us. She was found in our garden space, bloody, cold and obviously scared out of her wits. A vet visit, flyers around the area and months of waiting for an owner to come forward later and we were eventually told by Animal Control and our Avian vet that we could/should keep her. She is still slowly being trained at her level of comfort and at her pace. She's an absolutely amazing bird and I feel a real miracle in our lives considering how easily she could have died if we hadn't rescued her. We named Jasmine because of her all white body and where we found her, hiding in a jasmine bush.

    This video is amazing on so many levels. I wish Jennifer would have said how old Gideon is. He watches whatever she does & takes a real interest in it. The red feathers under his wings, visible when he flies, are so gorgeous. The dogs get all excited when he lands.
    It's always so wonderful to see people with the means to rescue animals like Gideon. They've got a big house so he is able to fly and be somewhat free, and then they're able to purchase & set up that batting cage for him, plus take the trip somewhere far away...just so that one bird, one little bird that would never have gotten the chance if it was me or someone else who had adopted him, to fly outdoors the way God made him to do. I think of all the thousands, perhaps millions, of caged birds who must long to spread their wings and fly but who will live their entire lives without ever being given the gift of doing something that is rightfully theirs to do. Thank you, Jennifer.

It honestly makes me sad when I think of caged birds… they were never intended to be limited like that. It reminds me of an Orca whale in a “pool” or dolphin in a cordoned-off area, just for people to come pay/watch them. It’s not natural and it must drive them insane. This woman has done wonders for Gideon and the other rescues she’s had. 👏🙏❤️ What a gift that she’s fortunate enough to provide all those things in order for him to thrive.💖🚺🦜

      Yes. I agree. We, ourselves feel it and I think that is why we pity the unnatural caging of animals that should fly free and even migrate long distances. Before the fall of man humans had abilities far and above what we are limited by now. I think we know it. I think we feel it in our spirits and one day we will all be free. Meanwhile, bless the rescuers and educators who can do something for all the creatures we have limited. The curse will soon be lifted and that is the hope we live for. "Come soon, Lord Jesus", is always my prayer for all of us.

Because unlike a dog, a bird can go places, much farther higher etc. So the need for recall would be tremendous...... And if I were still a large parrot owner/person (I was back in my 20s), I would bulld something like a catio, a really large outdoor enclosed by netting space for them to fly as much as they want.. But being kept safe..... The large parrot birds are not something to joke around with in terms of lifestyle care etc. They require you to know what you are doing and to make arrangements for them when you pass, because they most likely will outlive you as most have a really long, some 100 years, lifespan...and more. Like she said you tailor your life around them, not the other way around.... But they are beautiful and incredibly intelligent and INCREDIBLY loud lol....and ps our macaws didnt have their wings clipped either because I hated the idea of doing that to them.....

    What a beautiful polly! It is truly a blessing to win a bird's trust and heart. I know. My little friend for 14 years was a blue and white budgie I called "Skye". He lived so long because I loved and babied him. I think he considered me his mum. I think the whole purpose and joy of living is learning to give and receive unconditional love.

    I’m so happy to read about all of the safety precautions you’re taking! I raised several species of birds. All of them were hand raised and most would sit on my shoulder when we went outside. But two out of the dozens I’ve raised caught sight and sound of other birds suddenly flying by and startled, they took off to join them. And they weren’t the same species either. I’ve seen little blue and white budgies with flocks they don’t belong with. Sometimes the flock will tolerate it. Sometimes they’ll attack it. Especially if its feathers are different colors to the flock. Not predicting that will happen but the possibility’s always there. Even if he’s bonded, even if you think he believes that you are his mommy. Just be forewarned. Sometimes they’ll fly back. So if that does happen, be prepared to wait a day or longer in the hope that it will. Good luck. I know your little cutie means the world to you.

    I lived in Utah for four years. One thing he can't be ready for is any other aggressive raptor (owl, hawk, eagle, etc.), who will likely view Gideon as a nice snack. I've lived all over this country; every place has it's aerial predators, especially Utah. So free flying is not safe.

    • @luna-p
      @luna-p Рік тому +5

      She's risking his life in a 36 hour car trip to risk his life on a free flight in an area she doesn't live, all so she can feel better about herself when the bird is perfectly happy and safe flying around her gigantic house and her gigantic fenced in yard. I'm sure there won't be a cute little video about him dying in a car accident or getting lost or eaten. She's ridiculous.

      Maybe the parrot is Mormon, therefore Utah predators will not harm him in anyway.

    • @Rebecca_English
      @Rebecca_English Рік тому +2

      @@luna-p Birds are meant to fly free. I wish I could fly my cockatiel like that, but he's not a great flier. In a home, a bird has to navigate things like walls and windows, which are definitely hazards for them. In free flight, a bird can enjoy flying without those risks. When you free fly, you are constantly watching for predators on the horizon. If you see one, you recall your bird immediately. You have to supervise, just like a parent would when taking their child to the playground. Plus, free flight is often done in a group, with all the humans watching the skies. Gideon is incredibly well trained by someone who clearly knows what she's doing. This lady loves her bird intensely, and her bird loves her. She obviously knows the risks and has taken steps to mitigate them. They're going to be just fine!

      I'm guessing she's probably going with "Bird Tricks" they do this stuff professionally, taking whole groups out into the desert, with clear views for miles & miles in all directions, so they can be sure there's no predators in the area when they free fly any of the birds
      & I very much doubt owls are going to be of concern during the day, without a tree in sight lol

I sure hope we get to see that video and be able to share in both the joy of Gideon's experience and of course that of his owners. Best of luck Gideon, we're all routing for you!

    I am so glad she touches on changing our homes to suit our pets and not the other way around. Too many people get a pet in order to enrich their own lives, instead of the animal's life. Birds are an especially huge and rewarding commitment, but far too many birds pay the price for over-excited and underprepared people.

    That's honestly an intriguing and neat goal I think. I'm also happy that predators was considered for this experience he may not otherwise get as I remember back in Cali sometimes being able to see sooooo many hawks in one tree, see them flying often enough, and even hearing owls at night at times so my old home area would be an immediate no-go for something like this.
