    I feel the same way... The whole thing is so nonsensical. Make up exists to be worn. That people throw something away because it no longer can be bought by other people tells me they don't actually use nor like the thing. They're basically advertising whatever sells just like the people on QVC. Make up is just a means to make money but somehow I'm supposed to want to spend my money on it for some reason for something that is just trash for them.

    i think of some youtube channels as “shopping” channels. like you got there when you’re shopping and want a review or to see the product in action. and in that context i think it makes sense. they don’t want to use something on camera that viewers who are there to shop cannot buy

    If a product is discontinued, it makes sense for makeup professionals/influencers to follow shelf life of the product. Makeup is a consumable and may languish in a drawer for years. If the product is both potentially expired and discontinued, then there isn't a good reason for it to keep taking up space in someone's storage even if they once loved the product.
    As the product continues to age, they're less inclined to use it, especially with the constant influx of new products that creates that distinction between amateur and professional makeup enthusiasts:
    For a professional, a skin reaction could hurt their filming schedule or their physical health

    I couldn't stand when UA-camrs used to say that! It's a very head empty sentiment imo, & it makes it seem like they're always try'na angle our attention toward buying things to support them via affiliate links or codes for things we *can* still buy 👀

      I never even thought of that as a possibility - real light bulb moment for me w this one - I just naively thought it was bc they have to make up some criteria to declutter … which is always a struggle to make decisions like this - but then again, I also always thought this was the weirdest excuse I never would have come up with (though I’m not a makeup influencer)

    I have stopped watching and following creators who do this. I love hearing people appreciate and critique products and parse through it for themselves but when it's solely focused on making money, it sours the vibe for me! It's part of why I don't really watch declutters anymore and prefer "GRWM" or thorough reviews if I'm interested in the specific items. You're always so thoughtful, thank you for making this, Tom! 💗

    YES! I even thought this today! An influencer I love only ranked products that were recent releases. It’s frustrating because lots of my products aren’t recent releases and I’d like to know how they stack up against others. Also, for me, it unintentionally sends a message that they are led by trends and it highlights their level of consumerism which I think is very different to the average viewer. I may be in the minority here but I don’t tend to watch content creators with a mind to buy, I enjoy watching how they do their make up and the colours and their opinions etc. It’s also good to know when a brand has had a good product in the past as it means it might be a brand to watch. Aaaaanyway, glad to get that off my chest 😂

And I'll be honest, since I've unsubscribed from a lot of those more salesperson accounts/channels My own desire to keeping adding new things has also decreased. Also, there are a lot more collabs now (with creators, ip's, and other brands) that are inherently limited edition. Indie brands also have more limited edition and discontinuation due to limited stock, unable to source materials, and keeping business afloat.
    Some closed brands get resurrected like Athr Beauty and Beauty Bakerie (an investor stepped in as they were closing). The products are back (for however long) and now they don't have the product anymore, risk of repurchasing, and telling people to buy it even though they already devalued it.

    I totally agree! I also hate when people get rid of or keep something in a declutter when they feel like they have to. Like "I never where this but I'm going to keep it". Comparisons are helpful but a lot of the time that's not the content the influencer is making anyway. And swatching every shade instead of passing them along or donating them. At the end of the day though I just hope people are happy with their collection and content.

    Wow, I love this topic - so unique and interesting - I love seeing old makeup used for so many reasons, you mentioned and more - but also, it’s kind of a part of history, the change of makeup trends over time, and it helps me learn about what I might like or might want to look out for in the future - sure, maybe if it’s always videos w/ 2 years out of date makeup, that wouldn’t be helpful… but a favorite is a favorite for a reason, and I want/need to know that! 😅 also, helps me understand the UA-camrs preferences, which helps me decide if I want to zig or zag with their opinion for my own purchases - I actually like to watch videos from people w/ different choices than my own bc then I learn more about what I like
    Plus…. Sometimes you can still get an old product - maybe for too much money, or maybe a deal of deals …. But it’s fun to hunt down old beloved makeup as well ❤

    Maybe I’m radical or I DGAF, but I do not think content creators should make as many disclaimers as they do. I see disclaimers as a way of pre-responding to comments that they anticipate getting. But it’s also possible that it’s a self fulfilling situation: by making the disclaimer, the creator is planting the seed of the thing. It’s possible the viewer never would have thought about the thing to begin with. For example, “please don’t ask for anything that I’m decluttering.” I see that one a lot.

    I feel sad when influencers throw away items just because they are discontinued or limited edition, just because of the fact that viewers can buy them anymore, especially if it's something they love.
    As if the reason I am watching every video is to buy something because my favourite creators' only purpose is to sell me something.
    Most of the time I don't care at all about the products being used, it's nice to connect with someone familiar even if we don't know each other in real life. I don't like knowing that someone is getting rid of something they love because it can't be sold. That's what makes it more precious! I want you to keep and use and love the things you want to keep and use and love, even if I'll never get the chance!
    Influencers have to give themselves some credit sometimes and know they are more than just commercials! You aren't just influencing me to buy something... You are influencing me to be creative, to try new techniques. And to have a nice time just putting stuff on my face!

    This is part of a bigger problem in the whole beauty universe, which is that we have been trained to want a SPECIFIC piece of makeup instead of a color or a certain finish or overall look. Back in the day, before all content was advertising, you'd be watching TV or reading a magazine and see a makeup look you liked. Maybe you'd know what the specific makeup was, but likely not. So, you went out and found products that had the same color/finish. It was about getting a particular look on your face, not adding a specific object to your object collection.

    Late to this video but I definitely have feelings about this topic. It absolutely feels disingenuous when creators say things like that because yeah if you can’t monetize on this one product is it really not worth your time having it in your life? And for me as a consumer if I REALLY wanted to get my hands on a discontinued product… that Chanel blush you love for example… is it REALLY such a unique product, is there REALLY no other thing ~close enough~ that is available that could essentially provide me the same look/feel/etc.??
    Plus as a person with a very different skin tone and undertones than most of the creators I watch (I’m light/med neutral/olive and get quite tan in the summer and pale in the winter) I’ve just learned that the way a blush looks on you is NOT going to be the same on me 😂 and so I’ve stopped chasing products that are favs of the creators I watch cos I almost always end up disappointed

  • @FranFellow731
    @FranFellow731 Місяць тому

    I think there was a time when the average viewership would get mad because they felt like the influencer was always using a product on screen that they can’t buy and it was like taunting them. But I think the average viewers ideas of consumerism has changed, and also you can keep a product and just not use it on camera. That being said, this is just me, but even though I understand that it comes with the job, I also feel kind of weird when you or Hannah or anyone else practicing conscious consumerism declutters something you’ve JUST bought with your own money. You’re usually more conscious of the why, and it all makes sense to me in the grand scheme, but as someone who can’t really afford to buy and be disappointed too often, sometimes it feels wasteful of your time and product. It’s why I appreciate you both (and others like you) being up front with what you’ll do with it; whether giving it to a friend who doesn’t mind used product or even going so far as to return it (which is what I would do with a product I didn’t end up loving enough to keep.) Tom you’re so great at cutting ties with products that you maybe even loved but now just don’t care enough about to keep, and I’m so impressed with how ruthless you can be, that I think I’m just jealous that I feel the need to hoard anything I’ve ever bought and might still use one day.

    I would love for creators to keep what they truly enjoy without considering the availability of the product, but it doesn't bother me if that's an aspect they consider.
    Something that bothers me much more about declutters is the exaggerated language about how "gross"/"disgusting" products are to justify getting rid of them (I don't know if they're trying to convince themselves or the viewers). It's one thing to say, "I feel uncomfortable continuing using this because of its age," or tossing products that changed in some way. Obviously, everyone has a different comfort level when it comes to "old" cosmetics, but calling a barely used, not even two-year-old lipstick "disgusting" is uncalled for imo.

  • @sugaCat363
    @sugaCat363 Місяць тому

    I dont think I've ever heard anyone else talk about this but I've definitely experienced that icky feeling. It doesn't even have to be discontinued products--if I bought a product that was on an influencers Best Of The Year list and then three months later they declutter it, I feel a bit taken for a fool.
    I don't think that's necessarily the influencer's problem though. I think it's a pitfall of parasocial relationships. Sometimes, I feel disproportionately invested in someone else's makeup collection. And if that person reviews makeup as their job, then they kinda have to keep the makeup-treadmill going, and hanging onto discontinued makeup means that they're going to have irrelevant makeup taking up space. I agree with you that it feels gross and wasteful and cheapens my own relationship with the product i bought on their recommendation. But I think that's why I prefer channels that aren't solely review based. I like following people with smaller collections who do content other than reviews, so there isn't this rapid acquisition and purging of product.
    I don't really understand people complaining about not being able to buy a product because it's discontinued. But maybe that's just cuz I'm poor so I won't be able to buy most makeup whether it's discontinued or not 😂

  • @ElleEmm
    @ElleEmm Місяць тому

    I don't understand the rationale of a content creator throwing away a beloved product solely because it's discontinued. If they're concerned about upsetting viewers who are no longer able to acquire said product, they could simply use it for their own pleasure (or as a point of reference when comparing shades or textures) and avoid using it to create filmed looks.

    You can also decide to say no to limited releases as far too many brands right now push mediocre stuff solely by fomo. And don't want people to have any chance to even think about the purchase. I'm not keen to support that for what is in the end just random product. It's a hassle for the people having to review it in a rush and the customers jumping through hoops to get it

    If it’s thier job to review makeup I am ok with them decluttering things for any reason. Otherwise the volume would be overwhelming. I say this as a person with too much makeup and I am not a creator. I do wonder at so called minimalists who declutter their tiny collections. That’s a waste of money to me. I know it’s maybe an odd perspective but that’s how my brain works. I only throw things out when they go bad.

  • @sarahgalatea
    @sarahgalatea Місяць тому

    That always annoyed me but I think it did for a different reason than you. As a viewer, when I hear that, I understand that the creator might be trying to be nice but I’m the one responsible for my feelings. A viewer should be able to see a product that they don’t have and not feel that 1 they need to have and 2 they’re hurt because they cannot have! I know that the beauty space has always pushed more purchasing new things than using what you already have, which is probably why people feel like that, but I feel like we got to a place where the creator becomes responsible for my feelings and it’s so weird for me hahahah and also, I love seeing makeup history and products that I do not own, is just interesting and cool!

    I will begin the quest for the elusive thing if I’m intrigued enough. Mercari, Poshmark, eBay, etc. When content creators discard a beloved item just because viewers can no longer obtain said thing I assume they are also the kind of people who would get rid of their pet because they’re having a baby. And I certainly am the kind of person who would take pleasure in telling a friend you can’t get it anymore. Sorry babes.
