the animation, the music, the soulful coolness to this cartoon just makes me so happy, thank you 80s
This was my first exposure to the Raccoons. This special debuted on NBC in 1983. My aunt taped it. I loved it. I first saw the Raccoons series on The Disney Channel at my grandparent's house in St. George, Utah. It's a classic.
I got Goosebumps from the intro and I never heard of this show until a few weeks ago.
This is one of the two movies stands out the most for me. I probably watched this thousands of times when I was a kid and only later did I find out about the series. But I'm also a Smallville fan and I cannot believe that John Schneider had a role in this.
Dude I watched this movie so many times and I have been trying to figure out what it was for decades and go ally found it today! Hooray me.
I hate this movie passionately. :p
Same. My grandmother rented this for me as a child but I grew up in the US and had no idea it was a series until recently. So much nostalgia in this film❤
41:55 This Soundtrack gives me goosebumps every time!

After 40 years I cannot believe I still remember this song. Just watched with my 2 yo . Wow
The rotating star with its sound effect morbidly impressed me when it aired on television. My parents had gotten me “The Raccoons On Ice” on graphic vinyl, and I really looked forward to watching this
Okay, I’ve been a Bert fangirl FOREVER, I absolutely ADORE him in the series… But…
Honestly I love him in the movies I think and he’s even more ADORABLE in them a lot more, Len’s voice and personality for him I noticed compared to the series, he is less of the butt of the jokes (and people actually take him seriously at times as a flying ace), and he is still dorky, but his voice was less nasily and more kinda normal sounding and his personality and while still outgoing at times, is little more relaxed, shyer and soft-spoken, instead of the actual series where he’s more nasily and everything than ever (which I love don’t get me wrong), but he gets less of that and more serious overtime and less of his original character really, he’s also more savage because he gets very provoked easily, not so much to be goofy like his original self like in these, that shy, relaxed dumb soft spoken personality like early Bert in these movies are gone, you see it here and there in the series which is nice, but not as much, but he’s now more hyper and outgoing. I honestly miss this side to him and his character like this and kinda wish Len and Kevin kept him this way for the actual series… Also, I miss when he was early Bert like this where his voice was higher and would crack at times too, you didn’t really hear it much anymore when he voiced him for the actual series…I love his series portrayal no doubt and he is still absolutely ADORABLE , but honestly his movie self was a bit better..
In all honesty too, I think the rest were too in the movies…
-Melissa and Ralph had more personality, Melissa is sweet but more serious at times unlike the series and Ralph is well, Ralph, but honestly he’s more sarcastic here than the series
-Cedric had a less annoying voice and personality, he feels more included in the gang than the series where he was pretty much the butt of the jokes at times and was kinda just there…
-Sophia I think pretty much remained the same but actually stayed with the gang and didn’t just disappear like later in the series, Along with Sharpher and Brew who were pretty much the same
-Ceril Sneer actually felt terrifying at times, while in the actual series he and pigs were REALLY watered down and felt more like a comedy joke, they were always after the Racoons, but they rarely barely did anything here though in this and the other movies they actually tried to destroy everyone and win!
I’m sure they were changed for the series to probably appeal more to children but the movie versions of the characters were honestly a lot better!
Also, Bert’s little“Gee, thanks!” though! 42:47 😍🥰
(Notice how the voice-acting is a lot better at times too like that than the series?)
I will argue on these points...
Melissa has more personality in the series. Moreso when Susan Roman takes the role. Here she really doesn't do much, though it's a bit better in the previous two specials. Lost Star Melissa is to me most notable for her southern accent being a meme between my friends and I.
I would call Cyril's changes "character development" instead of "watering down." This is what made the Raccoons different from other 80s animated shows. More shades of grey, instead of keeping Cyril your stereotypical evil villain.
- I will also argue that Cedric was embarrassingly sheepish and was deathly afraid of Cyril. He grows a backbone in the course of the series.
- Bert gains more maturity in the course of the series. He FAR less brash and impulsive in the later seasons. He even gets to be the voice of reason in some episodes of season 5.
- Even the pigs evolve from being mindless "yes men" to developing their own personalities.
Oh, my childhood.
The born of the Raccoons Series in 1988, 5 years later
There was talk of them making a remake of this show during the pandemic and nothing has been said since, I am assuming that there wasn't enough interest. It is sad because I would love to see this show make a come back. The song "Run with Us" has a special place in my heart.
One of my favourite shows I was a baby ❤
I remember my brother got me this on video for Christmas when I was around 6. A much simpler time, I'm sad we seem to have lost touch with the true meaning of magic.
❤
Although I absolutely love this special, which I consider “The Raccoons movie”,I always feel bad for Cedric at the end. Although he offscreen redeemed himself, he’s also offscreen choked by his father Cyril! Lol!
I imagine Homer & Bart Simpson style!
That was a good observation!! Had not thought of it that way!! I guess because it was a dream, maybe that made it all ok. Hey! What about Sophia! I mean she had to go see Cedric after all that!! 🤣
It’s here!!!
“A dog?!?!? An earth dog?!?!?”
Deactivate that dog!
Damn!! I miss being a kid
I remember years and years ago my father turned on the TV and told me that Cyril Sneer has put the raccoons in jail. And naturally I ran to watch what was happening. Thank god for youtube so I can see this madness for myself
I need to say this, this was a very weird Cold War Era Cartoon
It was actually based on StarWars in a way

Please tell me I’m not the only one who massively crushed on Bert, he’s so cute! 😊
He’s so cute in the 3 movies though, kinda wish they didn’t change him and the others in the series overtime and just left them like this like in Season 1, and ended the series then like originally intended… Also the animation and everything for these was a lot better, I understand it was understandable because of cartoon budget reasons, but this studio really downgraded with the series animation, but it got worse in the later seasons…
War is bad, kids.
Look at the stars and may their warm light be with you
Don't mind me, I'm just being seven again.
That Aired On The Wonderful World Of Disney In 90's.
Its a shame the series didnt have the same animation quality and range of facial expressiveness. Cyril Sneers perosnailty is much darker and downright maniacal. Berts perosnailty is different here too.
The TV series was good, but yeah the prior TV Specials seemed to have more expressive, experimental, animation. Sure it was more off model, but they somehow looked more alive, and like the animation had more freedom.
Just look at the "Falling" music video bit at 28:09 it's beautiful line work, stylized movement, fading perspective shifts, and lighting effects. (Remember this is NOT CGI, this was all done with cels, and paper.)
Not something you see in animation much anymore sadly.
If you go frame by frame at 30:21 where Cyril leans into the camera
Jesus Christ, the face he makes is fucking terrifying. There’s no words to describe how scary Cyril’s face is. 😰😱
Even at 30:45, Cyril’s face is quite scary there too. 😱😱
"Pops not so bad once you get used to being afraid of him"
Bert Raccoon looks like Squidward and Inspector Gadget
He reminded me of Gonzo (Muppets) which is funny, because I heard Bert Raccoon was originally going to be a puppet before Kevin and his team decided to make a cartoon instead.
Captain Punjab brought me here. The Raccoons is a nice show.
Too bad this special is cut out from Roku TV. I mean, what did John Schneider do?
0:31-1:19
Captain Punjab anybody?
Tiene los capítulos de Bert mapache en español. Tegucigalpa Honduras.
John Schneider.. as in the Dukes of Hazzard?

Sadly, on the Crave streaming service, this special has been altered. Particularly to get rid of any John Schneider song. Which has been a problem existing since the 80s, as they replaced him on the Let's Dance album. But get this...KEVIN GILLIS is now Ranger Dan's voice in the 2023 remaster.
For those of us who don't have Crave, did they just cut out the songs or redo them with new voices? Using the versions from the Let's Dance! album would have made sense if they had to make changes. Those onese are good. If the songs were just cut, that is sad. I couldn't imagine this special without "Calling You," which is one of my favourites, or any of its other songs. The Kevin Gillis thing is kind of neat though.
@@serenajohnson6281 Both. Calling You and One More Night are gone. The others are the Let's Dance album versions.
These shows should be released as they originally were shown, uncut, unedited and intact. Thanks for alerting us before we buy them.
They did this because they didn't want to pay royalties.
@@Suddenlyits1960 That or Kevin disagrees with John's politics?
@@serenajohnson6281 Some are, but Calling You is gone, never mind they had a cover on the Let's Dance album. One More Night is gone too. Both are replaced by other Raccoons songs.
Why was John Schneider cut from the remaster? Seems kinda mean...
So you saw the remaster too?
Why isn't the series released in higher quality?
It is. On the Crave service.
@@JMFabiano But why not here?
It's edited on Crave. Some songs have been removed and Ranger Dan's voice has been redone.
@@Guyverman01because they want you to buy it on bluray.
Im generally not a big fan of big name celebrities guest voicing cartoon characters. The professional voice actors always do far better job and give the characters a unique personality.
Singer Dottie West is the only guest voice I can think of in this. So I don't see how that's very relevant to this TV special.
And granted, there are cases of celebrities doing good voice acting too, so I wouldn't write them all off. Robin Williams, Tim Curry, and others have done good voice work before. Don't forget many good voice actors originally started only doing live action before getting into voicing. So if we only chose people who only do voice acting to voice in cartoons we wouldn't have many of the great voice actors.
❤️🦨😃😃😃
Why does zero sneer? Kick his dog😑❤️
I never really cared for the cartoon and this special is just okay.
