  • In this complete version (without his subtitles) Bill Ritchie teaches how he prints the intaglio way in 12 minutes. Intaglio is the most common way etchings are printed by hand. He uses a replica of a Rembrandt etching plate (much enlarged) and in one-minute steps he prepares paper, press and the plate. Following cleanup, he dries, mats and frames his demonstration “masterpiece.” He prints with the DIY Mini Etching Press he designed and sells on printmakingworld.com

    Hi Bill Ritchie,
    the Mini-Halfwood I've got from you, is still working very fine with different techniques: cold-point intaglio, "hot-point" intaglio, embossing, relief-printig from wood, copper, carton-board >new: motiv made with a mini-laser-engraver, linol-cut, and a lot more...
    Every idea/experiment is easy to realise, because the press is stored beside my desk-top ;-)
    Thank you again

    Letterpress with the Mini-Halfwood:
    the frames of the Adana 8 x 5" fits to the Mini-Halfwood with 14cm rolers.
    So you can letterpress also with the Halfewood.

    Whenever I've done this The copper plate bends and curves with the movement of the roller similar to coin presses. Any tips on how to prevent this?

    • @BillRitchie
      @BillRitchie  7 років тому

      Sorry I took a long time, I just noticed your question. Yes, if the paper under the plate is thicker than, say, newsprint, then it allows the plate to curve. When I want to shape a medallion or anything to fit the curve of a wood surface, then I put mat board under the copper and adjust the pressure until the curve is right. It's reversable, too. I hope I got your question right, let me know if not. ritchie@seanet.com

    how do you determine the amount of pressure to put on the press?

    • @BillRitchie
      @BillRitchie  6 років тому

      Trial and error. The variables, in addition to pressure, are (1) paper, the kind and its softness/dampness, (2) the ink, how stiff or runny, (3) the plate, how deep the textures and lines, (4) the felts (aka packing), how thick/thin. In rare cases, the temperature of the plate if you're using oil-base inks. The hardest thing to describe online is the "feel" or the resistance met when turning the wheel; it's also the best thing about f2f teaching, i.e., being there. As for motor-driven presses, I suppose the sound of the motor. Thanks for this good question, Mary Shoemaker.

      As far as I know, I'm the sole source, but they can't be purchased by themselves, only with the Mini Etching Press. You can make them yourself, too using the silitransfer method like you see in MAKE A BADGE. Thanks for asking, Alex!

      Yes, only at the end so the remaining ink doesn't dry. Even if it does, it can be dissolved. Good point.

    I noticed that in rotogravure there is no blanket/mat. What does the mat do in this case?

    • @BillRitchie
      @BillRitchie  Рік тому

      The "mat" in this case refers to the popular framing method for a finished, presentable artwork - such as this intaglio print. In rotogravure (which is not what this video is about) there may be a mat involved but I am not sure because I don't know much about true rotogravure printing. It may be similar to offset lithography printing were there is a blanket (or mat?) involved, which receives the ink and then transfers from there to the finished paper for the final, presentable print. Think of the mat in my video as a "window" inside the picture frame. I hope I got your question right - if not, reply. And thank you! - BR

    • @weirdsciencetv4999
      @weirdsciencetv4999 Рік тому

      @@BillRitchie Well rotogravure is a form of intaglio printing, though more commonly the engraving is a series of dots than lines. In rotogravure a doctor blade puts ink into the engraved cylinder, also another one wipes the rest of the cylinder’s surface clean. Then the print material is fed between two rollers, one if which has the engraving, the other just opposes. The gap and the print material properties alone sets the pressure. The print material gets squeezed into the engraving and takes up the ink. In general crafting intaglio style printing, I see people sandwich the paper and engraving between a blanket of sorts. I know this video is about intaglio printing, but the two are related and I was just wondering if the blanket evens out the applied pressure or some other purpose.

    • @BillRitchie
      @BillRitchie  Рік тому +1

      @@weirdsciencetv4999 I get it now - THAT blanket. It is often a thin wool blanket with two purposes: One, it pushes the softened (damp) paper into the intaglio lines to catch the ink and, two, it absorbs the water from the damp paper. Sometimes a person might forget the paper and, if that happens, the felt blanket gets printed! Not a good thing. Thanks again. - BR
