Lucy giving her resumé in ep1 was a pretty clever way of keeping her from being a Mary Sue. It means that we know that she is a trained fighter even though that contrasts with her personality, and she hasn't seen any real violence, and provides some limits to exactly what is in her skillset.
Without those few minutes showing what the character is trained to do it would come as a shock that the "1950s housewife" is able to fight off raiders, handle blades and guns, know detailed pre-war history, or repair machinery. None of that fits preconceptions for the "1950s housewife" trope, so if the character were able to pick up a gun and hit confidently without any explanation, it would set off alarms for the audience.
We don't need to be told that the veteran gunslinger or trainee soldier know something about fighting, but if you want a character who is introduced focussing on her wedding and future family to also be a fighter, you need to tell us what exactly she can do, and keep her within those limits.

@@GeorgiaCav furthermore I felt it was actually reasonable in how it handled the portrayal of martial violence. Lucy, even with some training, couldn't just put down any many in her path, it was clear she got physically dominated by the Ghoul and other men would definitely pose a threat to her. And the show makes it clear that it's her taking up of arms that equalizes that a bit for her and she's better able to protect herself, though she still retains an unwillingness to use violence unless absolutely required which I liked as it preserved some of her innocence despite her maturing into the realization of the wasteland.

Exactly not being a Mary-Sue, which all recent female leads has been, makes her very interesting and likable. The evolution from being a vault-dweller to becoming a surface-dweller or at least learn the ways on the surface was clear and interesting. And helped make all episodes interesting too. I guess my biggest criticism is for the Brotherhood of Steel. In the games, the Brotherhood is comprised of well-disciplined and capable zealots that treat each other very well, but despise everything in the wasteland that isn't 100% human while coveting all the tech. But in the show, they're cruel and not very loyal or competent, especially the 4 characters we're introduced to: Max, Dane, Titus and Thaddeus, though Thad gets a pass because he's actually a pretty good character.

I think they will elaborate on that in the next season(s). I'm left with the impression that the Brotherhood of Steel is corrupted and very much in a state of decline at this point in the timeline.
The first hints of this has to do with the flashbacks that Maximus has. I think the Brotherhood that Maximus grew up idolizing became something much less honorable and virtuous as he aged, but he didn't see it clearly until Knight Titus burst that bubble for him. Titus demonstrated cowardice, impatience, weak leadership, callous egocentricity, and zero accountability. Of course Maximus failed in his duty as squire, but Titus' expectation of loyalty, having earned none whatsoever, would inevitably collapse as trust could not grow between them if Titus continued the pattern he'd established.
We also have Elder Cleric Quintus, someone that seems resentful of how the Brotherhood has changed, but also very power hungry with designs on rebuilding the order to meet his vision. There are little puzzle pieces like this scattered throughout the Brotherhood scenes, but I think a picture will start forming early to mid-season 2 that will bring some clarity.

Personally, I think the scenes with Norm and the unravelling mystery of Vault 31 were the best, there was a lot of sinister undertones/tension mixed in with dashes of dark humour. The same feeling I had when exploring creepy Vaults in the game itself. The dual stories of the actor/ghoul were a very close second, Goggins hit it right out of the park.
As for Maximus, I'm not sure what the Leader of the Brotherhood, or Lucy, see in his excellent depiction of the idiot savant.

As a big fan of the FO games, and Walter Goggins from the Justified show, loved his reaction to the bombs falling and even moreso his heartbreaking reaction to hearing the evil plotting of his wife (beautifully portrayed by Turner). Purcell is terrific, as are Betty and the rest of the vault-dwellers. The brotjerhood is ok, hope it gets fleshed out in S2. Maximus is fine eventually, the love story is ok. Writing is excellent, lot of quirky humor. The revelations about the dad were very good. Magnificent, hope it doesn't fall off in quality like Westworld. Plan a rewatch soon.

The producers admit that they should have explained better, but it was not changed. The Fall of Shady Sands as per the chalkboard just meant the begging of the end of it`s influence and not it`s actually destruction. The destruction of the town happened just after the New Vegas game and the show`s timeline is very close after whatever happened to New Vegas that we saw in the end of this season.
