But even by going to topic bots channels, some musics can be only accessed by premium members, depending on the agreement between youtube and the artist/label
Usually, the last album is for premium, and the others are unlocked.

The main reason for VEVO is that before it existed, the record companies spent a fortune FIGHTING youtube to pull its unauthorized content, and loosing that battle. So they went a different route by forming VEVO- Put there own content on youtube to offset the authorized music.

Yeah occasionally artists will do great music videos that actually add to the experience or tell a whole nother story (first coming to mind is Twenty One Pilots) but it's occasional. No one's about to pay monthly fees for that lol

Oh, great channel, by the way. I've been binge watching for the last few nights. There's a lot of really good information and history about these chains that either go belly up or get really successful and sometimes even both.
vevo exists becausr prior to it in 2009 the videos were sorted by RecordLabel *not artist*. so there were like 7 thousand vids per channel! all the artists mixed together & it was hard to find the official videos. so then labels got together & made vevo to indicate that yes this artist is official. it was basically verified channels before verifying an account was a thing.

That makes sense about the companies coming together. I remember a channel Univeral Music Group which posted nost of the music videos back in 2008 and early 09. Then one day all the music videos dissapeared and I noticed the came back in the following days and weeks on Vevo channels

Most of the popular stories about them are easily proven to be false (dont get me wrong, I still hate them). Also, out of curiosity, what are the top three most hated companies?
One part that's missing from this analysis is that running a streaming video platform allowing anyone in the world to instantly watch high quality videos is not free. It may well be that the percentage of ad revenue that Google takes is low enough to make it not worth it for Vevo to run their own streaming platform.

I love your videos, honestly though I have looked at the Vevo site and I will say that it not only threatens youtube but also potentially Spotify which is as of now seen as the Netflix of music with the exception of course of Pandora. I think Vevo does have the potential to grow especially since it contains such a wide array of music.

I think the issue is that music videos are promotional material, they're ads to sell you on the artists' tours and albums. If they put it behind a paywall or another site, they would gain ad revenue, but they would lose viewers, which means they would effectively reach fewer people with their "ads".

I think that they make it all free because trying to remove your music from the internet completely would absolutely be a losing battle. It's better to just make the officially released one be the most popular so they can get add revenue from it however meager that revenue might be in comparison to whatever they prefer. If the song isn't free on UA-cam than it will be free somewhere. People will go wherever that is rather than pay anything.

I’m here to listen to the content as I go about my daily routine. So I treat it sort of like vevo for company topics.
I have wondered for a while what VEVO was and you've done a typically superlative job of explaining things. The Netflixing of music videos is food for much thought to say the very least. I have personally discovered so many musical artists on UA-cam it is where I go. The mixture of videos is great because wether surfing for tunes or other content the wide variety of material brought up would never happen on an exclusively music site. Damn. Not quite sure how to absorb what seems somewhat inevitable.

What we have right now is probably the best for viewers. And the best for VEVO would be to take all the videoclips from youtube so that people would have to download the VEVO app. However, they are probably waiting to have their app and web perfect and trying to gain users before they jump on something so huge. I dont think Spotify or Apple Music are too bad for VEVO, it would be the same as for youtube. Right, people dont really care about videoclips, but 90% dont have Spotify Premium and that is why they come to UA-cam.

I think Vevo sticking on UA-cam helps prevent piracy. If they pulled videos from UA-cam or went to a paid subscription, piracy would be rampant again. They may not like it but it is in their best interest to keep it on UA-cam.
I can't see very many people paying for music videos. Even back in the MTV music video days, a lot of people had it on to hear the songs first and foremost and the video was secondary.
I think it's possible Vevo could pull its videos off UA-cam but going to a paid subscription site would kill the company as well as the music video industry with it. The best option is for things to just stay as they are.

While Vevo may *want* to go into a subscription only service, they *can't.* The reason Vevo is a thing is because people would post music videos to UA-cam regardless of whether they have permission to or not. The Record Labels already lost this war when Napster proved people would go around them completely to get the music they wanted to hear, and then UA-cam made it impossible to stem the tide. The record labels made up Vevo and went on a copyright-strike attack across UA-cam to force music videos in their library back under their control, but people only accept them as a necessary evil. Having proved they will go around the gatekeepers once, people would just go around them again.

The advantage that Vevo have in still making videos available on an ad-paid model, but free to the end user on UA-cam, as opposed to putting it all behind a paywall is to do with reducing piracy. There is no point someone illegally downloading it, at bother and legal risk, if it is available on UA-cam, free to the end-user. Stick it behind a paywall, then piracy will increase again. For the companies, sharing ad-revenue with Alphabet/Google/UA-cam is better than losing it altogether to freeloaders.

As you said Google is a part of vevo and google owns UA-cam so vevo leaving UA-cam would probably not be in googles best interest. This means google small involvement in vevo might be the only thing stopping the switch.
Google are the powerful ones here. They have the advertisers. Vevo doesn't get even a tiny bit of traffic compared to youtube.
It will remain as it is. Moving such a critical mass of viewers into another platform would be too difficult and expensive. Plus record labels don’t manage only existing catalogs but need the youtube exposure for new acts.
The thing about music videos is that they function as advertising for the artists, and I don't think a subscription is really financially smart.
The first music videos were designed to play in record stores to encourage you to buy certain albums, and MTV was actually created for this reason too. It was 24/7 advertising for musicians.
This might not be as necessary anymore, since most people probably know when a new Ariana Grande video is out, but I don't think VEVO will ever put ALL, or even most, of their videos behind a paywall because music videos still improve sales. It would be sort of dumb on their part if they did.

The vevo website isn't available worldwide. So for them to pull all videos from UA-cam right now would mean a significant lost on viewership for them. On a marketing and branding standpoint this would mean suicide. Artists would move on for better deals, and vevo would be out of business.
That wouldn't be any worse than UA-cam, though. I challenge you to find even a single music playlist on which every video is viewable, without living in the USA or Canada.
Been watching your channel since the MTV video, and I never knew I could find something like companies so interesting. However your video on Enron and other videos like that gave me a lot of insight on the business mistakes that could kill you. It's helpful because I was hoping to major in business. So thank you! Honestly though I think Vevo staying free is the smartest decision. We all know them, and being the biggest music video company they get constant traffic.
The worst part about if they did pull all videos they would the original Never Gonna Give You Up from UA-cam since it is VEVO. It would be a sad day.
I used to have the VEVO app. It's cool. But I like the independent/unsigned artists videos available on UA-cam also. So I think as long as they can maintain the status quo, good for us.
Why? Because people would just upload music videos to youtube anyway. And let's face it, youtube is more famous than vevo.
