5 years of art school and nobody taught me that the highlight/specular reflection on an object is related to the viewer's location. I was always thought it was the most concentrated point of center light. And I only owe $30,000 to student loans!
Guillermo Lopez Jr. - That reminds me a video I've seen while ago, students of art school recomending NOT to go to art school. ua-cam.com/video/0TCCnNuGLxE/v-deo.html
i can think of 3 things to consider for candle light on face setup 1. the drop off rate of the light will be very high. The intensity of the light will decrease very quickly as objects get further from the candle 2. if the candle is the only source of light in the room, there will be very little reflected light, so shadows will be almost black. Unless there is a surface close enough to reflect the candle light back into the shadow. 3. Both light and shadow will be very warm
This has got to be the best discussion of light and shadow I have come across. All the other's I have seen and read all contain the same--very basic--descriptions. Finally, I've been given some real detailed, useful information. Thank you! One more UA-cam subscription.
thank you! this was amazing! I agree, art professors don't teach you anything in school. We pay hundreds of dollars to have someone criquite how little we know but they don't teach a single thing. This single video was more imparting of knowledge than all of my drawing classes put together! Can't wait to buy the DVD!
Your tutorials are terrific. Excellent content and production values. As a 71 year old artist, I'm still learning new tricks. Thank your for your great work.
I'm planning on covering figure drawing next. That includes gesture, structure, proportions, anatomy. Also in the future I want do some videos on facial expressions / emotions, variations of age, gender, race. Later will start doing videos on oil painting. Not sure exactly what the timing of these are, but as you can imagine it will take a while to get through all that. Hopefully I can make some profit soon so that I can hire help and have more time to focus on creating more content :)
I am absolutely thankful for stumbling upon your channel. You answer the questions I'd ask before I have a chance to think of them. You are very thorough in your explanations when so few instructors are. Not only are you a highly skilled artist, but you are a highly skilled teacher. Please keep up the wonderful work.
you might be making the same mistake i've made, rushing. try and master techniques from one video at a time, not actually master but learn from them and take your time to practice, this pays off in the end

I was looking for videos I can show to teach basic drawing. There are so many instructional drawing videos which were so wrong. Thank you for your video. I appreciate it.
This is a million dollar explanation, probably the best one on the internet.... when you talked about dvd I checked and it was 11 years old but the subject is still valid and will always remain ( good that nature does not change like technology ).... hats off for such a detailed explanation.... love from Pakistan
NOW that's a tutorial. Couldn't find anything appropriate apart from Vilppu. Hope you will release more videos about technology of drawing, basics theory or exercises. Regardless, thank you a lot, that was really clear and helpful.
Thank you so much, this is exactly what I needed. I can't stand the youtube vids that try to be goofy and don't actually give much clear straight forward and simple info. This is just what I needed and I like when you break the egg.
So this is off-topic, but- that moment where you split up the egg’s shadows and explained the tangent answered my biggest question about shading spheres! “How do you find the minor axis of the ellipse that makes the shadow?” I figured out that the major axis of the ellipse was made by the light rays (well, the lines the light rays make when the hit the surface), but the minor axis eluded me. Then you brought that tangent up, and I realized that the minor axis of the ellipse HAS to be parallel to that tangent! Thanks for helping me see the light!
This is literally the most useful video I've ever seen and I've seen hundreds of them! But now for the first time I REALLY understand the concept of the light, shadows, reflections, highlights and shit :D
This is one of the most helpful videos about this topic I've ever watched! Your explanations are very clear and relevant for artists, and your examples with real life objects are great. Thank you for this quality content!
Just want to let you know, your videos couldn't be anymore concise, well thought out or entertaining. Excellent work, looking forward to putting the knowledge into practice!
this was super helpful, my drawing teacher linked this video for our assignment this week and i definitely have a further understanding of shadow and light after watching this. thank you :)
Your videos have helped out my photography post processing a ton. Learning about light and form is really important for many artistic endeavors and I appreciate your clear and informative explanations!
Very insightful video. This lesson is missing from just about every art school in the nation. Only private Ateliers are teaching these basics concepts to their students.
Wow Stan, this video was amazingly informative! I especially like that you encourage the viewer to "break the rules" a little. I often find myself fussing too much about whether or not shadows look correct rather than use them as tools to bring out the shape of the objects they're being cast upon.
I am watching this for the probably fifth time or something and still learn something from it. I understand i things i didn't thought about during my first watch. thank you.
Really nice and clear video. Cought some bad habits i do that give me more trouble than they should. Mostly the highlight part, i used to overcomplicate its position falsely asuming its position to be the lightsource. Keep the spectacular work up Proko
Gracias maestro, por todos tus videos. Thank you so much for the videos Stan. I love drawing as a hobby. I have been learning so much from them. I don't have the resources to be a patron beacause I'm a student, but when I graduate I will for sure. Thanks Again
Best Drawing tutorials by far, hope to get your dvd, your great. Love that you have personality too, you can tell your passionate about what your speaking about and its enjoyable to watch.
This is a very, very good video. I am in a drawing class, and we covered light and shadow rather briskly yesterday, and this video was an invaluable supplement to that. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for making this video, really clear explanation on a subject that isn't always made too easy for people to learn. All the best, these tutorials are great!
Hmm. I might buy this dvd. Your current videos are great. Just so you know, there are a few things with the lapelle mic being low that allows us to hear your sleeves brushing against the table. It's not really huge, but being someone who is somewhat of an audiophile, you might want to switch to a simple boom mic.
Super good video, exactly what I have been missing for a year. Really looking forward to drawing forms instead of just shapes now. Thanks so much for sharing. All best Peter (from Denmark, Europe)

Hi, proko! I always appreciate you about teaching videos. And...I have a question! The highlight moves to a different spot, following the camera but, the center of light doesn't change. Then, the core shadow also doesn't change, right?
