Do we have the right to judge someone else’s intention?
One time, when the Muslims' army were headed towards the battle of Badr, a man came to the Prophet ﷺ, requesting to be part of the army. Upon hearing this, the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were so happy, because this man was known for his valor and courage, thus he would be a great asset to the army!
The Prophet ﷺ asked him: “Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?” The man was honest, and said no. So the Prophet ﷺ replied: “Return, for I do not seek help from someone who is not a believer.”
As they continued traveling towards the battlefield, the same man approached the Prophet ﷺ again with the same request. He ﷺ asked him the same question, and the man gave him the same answer. Again, the Prophet ﷺ declined his offer.
After some time, in the midst of their travel, the man met the Prophet ﷺ for the third time! The Prophet ﷺ asked him again: “Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger?” This time, the man said: “Yes (meaning, he declared he was a Muslim).”
How do you think the Prophet ﷺ reacted? Did he ﷺ accuse the man of lying?
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Then come along with us.” [Sahih Muslim 1817]
Yes, we should not be naive, and we should take the necessary precautions while dealing with others. But at the same time, be cautious from judging someone’s intention, because Allah says:
🔵 ❛O believers! Avoid many suspicions, ˹for˺ indeed, some suspicions are sinful…❜ [Surah Al-Hujuraat 49 : 12]
🔵 And the Prophet ﷺ said in another hadith: ❛I have not been ordered (by Allah) to search the hearts of the people (i.e. judge people’s intention).❜ [Sahih al-Bukhari 4351]
We ask Allah to grant us wisdom and sincerity, as well as protect us from those who are insincere.
