I sent a few bucks, but US should really get public health care finally. I thought there are at least some nonprofit or maybe state organizations that help with med bills to victims of crimes, but apparently no and now donors from around world and US are paying for US health system failures to help the brave Thad. If any US citizen sees this, imagine: I am from eastern europe, we earn like peanuts compared to you and even we have public health care! And now I am sending money to US to help a victim like Thad to pay med bills that are usually crazily inflated by the health providers or declined to be reimbursed by private insurance? Pretty weird, innit? For a "2nd/3rd world" country citizen to be helping pay med bills of a "1st world" country and "the best country in the world" citizen, heh? 🤦‍♀️

@@vivelajonnyHe had a choice. When you hear stories like this (Mary Vincent is another survivor who makes you wonder how she could have been kidnapped by a serial killer, SA’d and tortured for hours, her arms were cut off, and assuming she was dead, was thrown off a cliff, naked. She somehow made it up the cliff and onto a highway. The serial killer served five years, was released, and murdered another young girl), the person survives because they are young and possess super-human determination.
It isn’t a knock at people who die; I’m 100% certain I would give up. I don’t think it’s divine intervention. That suggests a higher power allowed those who didn’t survive to senselessly succumb to torture and murder.
I genuinely believe people like Thad and Mary are wired differently. Their determination to live - and making it happen - cannot be explained. It’s truly incredible.

I’m so glad you elected to cover this. I don’t feel there is enough coverage of this case, and what is out there is all the same. There was a man working on a podcast and actually got interviews with both Thad Phillips and the perpetrator, but it eventually fell by the wayside and his podcast went a totally different direction. I would love to read those interviews, though.
It’s appalling that the original coroner failed to identify all of those broken bones. By declaring it a drowning of undetermined cause, and by failing to complete a competent autopsy, it placed that “drowning case” at the bottom of the list of investigations - if it even made the list at all. Even with the Steiners being told that the perpetrator was involved, the police weren’t even calling it a murder and didn’t know that the bones were broken. So he was involved in… what?
It just makes me feel awful for the Steiner parents and, most of all, for Thad Phillips. That coroner failed everyone in this case.

I can’t even fathom how a 13 year old or anyone could possibly survive that, and not to mention how strong he is to be able to live with that type of trauma especially so young. I can’t even imagine. Such incredible physical and mental strength. I truly hope Thad has found some type of peace in life and as much happiness as possible with his family and his children.

This poor young man…I’m so glad that he survived.
Toughness of mind, and body. He could’ve died from infection from the large broken bones.
This makes “Misery” look like a nursery rhyme.

I cried like a kid losing his mom when I broke my elbow I remember feeling so horrified at the hollow (the part where the joint broke) region of my skin. And my god this man, kudos to his strenngth, and rationality was able to survive. You are an inspiration Thad Philips

What I love about this channel is that it concentrates on how smart, resilient, strong and good-hearted are the survivors.
Showing the stories of them surviving in order to prevent this from happening, or how the families of those who were lost are doing everything in their hands to stop this crimes for happening
This is what every single true crime show should do.

I have never heard a more inspirational story about refusing to give up.
My heart breaks for all the victims of this violent and viscious criminal. I am so happy for Thad that his determination and will to live paid of and put him paid off, that he was able to get that phone and is able to share his story with the rest of the world.
Thad, if you ever get to read this comment, know that we are incredibly proud of you, your story is a very difficult one to hear so I am unable to imagine how hard it must have been when you had to testify in court. I am so very sorry for all the pain and suffering as well as everything else that you had to experience after being kidnapped from your home. Thank you for sharing your story with the world. You are loved.

The way I was gasping at the cruelty and brutality of this case. Unbelievably evil!! Thad’s fight to live brought justice for not only himself, but all the other victims!! He put a monster away!

that is absolutely horrible… i cant even imagine the pain the boy faced throughout this whole crime. This boy is so strong. This actually makes me sick and sad that a person could do this to a person, especially a young person

I can only imagine the pure relief and what it feels like to go through something like that and then hear the police at the door to rescue you! I found my brother dead on the bathroom floor last week, phoning the ambulance and begging for them to hurry and please help felt like hours. When I heard the sirens and saw them pull up outside, running with equipment to try and help was the biggest sense of relief I've ever felt, even though they couldn't save him, I'm so thankful that they were there and tried to do everything they could to revive him. Sadly he'd been dead for a few hours 😔
